Has the Modern Family bubble burst? That might be the question on some critics lists after the ABC comedy failed to retain the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical Or Comedy, despite many expecting it would.

Modern Family instead lost out to the first season of HBO’s Girls, whilst one of its leading lights, Sofia Vergara, again lost out in the Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film. The defeat was part of a wider trend across the television awards that saw all the major networks fail to gain a single win between them, cable shows instead reining supreme. MSN reports that the Modern Family cast put a funny face on defeat, snapping a picture of them all pretending to blub their eyes out, but with the show now four seasons old is there perhaps a hint that the show could be on the wane – not least after it had to battle back from a season opening last September that was down on the previous season’s opening ratings wise?

It’s unlikely, we reckon. The show is still putting the good out ratings wise, and is still proving to be one of ABC’s big hitters. However, given its loss at the Golden Globes we’re not too confident about its chances elsewhere; Modern Family is up for numerous awards at events it won last year, namely the Writers Guild of America Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Of America Awards. It’s won at the last three PGA awards in a row, if that crown slips then it may be time to start asking this question a little more seriously.
