Rap star Soulja Boy has been arrested on suspicion of violating his probation after police found a firearm at his Hollywood Hills home, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 26 year old rapper, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was detained by officers at his house in the 3200 block of Dos Palos Drive at around 7:00am on Thursday (December 15th), according to LAPD spokeswoman Officer Jenny Houser.

Soulja Boy was nearing the end of the two-year probation period relating to a conviction for carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle in late 2014 when he was a passenger in a car that was pulled over in Granada Hills. The driver was cited for operating the vehicle without a licence, but the rapper was taken in and bailed for $35,000.

It is not clear why officers were called to his address, but while they were in attendance, TMZ reported that they discovered a firearm at the property, in contravention of the terms of his probation. Associated Press later confirmed the details of the arrest.

He had been sentenced to two years of probation on December 18th, 2014 – meaning that the rapper was just a matter of days away from completing that sentence.

Soulja Boy came to prominence in 2007 with his debut single ‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’, which hit the top of the American Billboard charts and inspired a popular dance with its music video, which had racked up 27 million YouTube views after a year. More hits followed, including ‘Kiss Me Thru The Phone’ the following year, but none were really on the same scale.

More recently, he has been appearing in VH1’s ‘Love And Hip-Hop Hollywood’, which tracks the lives of aspiring rap artists and successful recording artists.
