Drake, Obama And Willie Nelson: Here Are The Highlights Of SXSW 2016

South by Southwest Drake Barack Obama Willie Nelson

Another SXSW has come and gone and it has definitely been one to remember. As well as the usual display of all the best music to keep tabs on for the rest of the year, there were some brilliant films being premiered and some particularly interesting speakers at this year's SXSW Interactive. Plus, there were some major surprises which were, ironically, only to be expected.

DrakeDrake performed a surprise set at Fader Fort

First off, there were rumours all over the place that Drake was going to appear for a surprise set at SXSW this year and indeed we weren't disappointed. It wasn't long after Yo Gotti left the stage at Fader Fort on Saturday (March 19th) that the 'Hotline Bling' hitmaker appeared for his OVO Sound set. He wasn't the only one to take to the mic though as several other artists from his new label project including DVSN, Wood$, Majid Jordan and PartyNextDoor also joined him to showcase the Toronto based Warner Music Group imprint. Drake himself played six songs (sadly none of which were his aforementioned hit) such as 'Energy' and 'Know Yourself'.

Demi Lovato: Lady Gaga's SXSW Performance "Glamorised" Eating Disorders

Lady GaGa Demi Lovato South by Southwest

Demi Lovato came under fire from Lady GaGa's Little Monsters after she criticised the Mother Monster's performance at the South by Southwest show on Thursday (13th March).

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was vomited on whilst performing on Thursday.

Gaga appeared at Austin music festival and, as a planned part of her act, was vomited on by a professional vomit painter. The painter in question, Millie Brown, intentionally puked up a green slimy substance on Gaga whilst the 27-year-old was performing 'Swine'.

Lady Gaga's SXSW Keynote: "I’ll Quit Before I Change"

Lady GaGa South by Southwest

Lady GaGa’s much anticipated SXSW keynote saw the singer detail her difficult year, which comprised a mediocre response to her album Artpop, a split from her management, a nasty hip injury followed by surgery. But she vowed to never change, and would rather quit pop than compromise.

Lady GagaLady Gaga gave a candid keynote at SXSW

“I refuse to compromise and allow my talents to be monetized to the point that I don’t want to be here anymore. I will stop, I will quit, I will retire from the commercial market if I have to do something other than be myself because if I can’t be myself in this moment than everything I have said to my friends since the beginning will be a total lie,” she said in an hour-long question-and-answer session.

Lady Gaga Goes Back To Basics - Lingerie And Fake Bodily Fluids - At SXSW

Lady GaGa South by Southwest

Lady GaGa brought some serious 2008 nostalgia to her SXSW gig on Thursday night. Her show included highlights like fake vomit, a roasting spit and some good old-fashioned mechanical bull riding. It’s not cliché, it’s classic. If you’re wondering how it all ties together, imagine Gaga being wheeled out on a huge roasting spit, from which she sang her first song, Aura. Apparently this time it wasn’t some thinly veiled metaphor about celebrity culture, just a nod to Texas’ infamous BBQ culture.

Lady Gaga
Gaga was back to classic form for her show at the Austin-based festival.

Clad in black lingerie and fishnets, Gaga addressed the crowd, saying: "I've been having such a good time all week. I haven't showered. I've been drinking all week. And eating."

Coldplay Debut New Album Material At Lauded SXSW Comeback Show

Coldplay South by Southwest Chris Martin London Grammar Imagine Dragons

Last night, Coldplay took to the stage at Texas' South by Southwest Festival where they debuted new material from forthcoming album Ghost Stories alongside well-worn favourites. Support acts London Grammar and Imagine Dragons were big enough names for the crowd to pick out songs from each that they recognised but the former had the air of "evidently nervous musicians still working out how to feel comfortable commanding an audience," according to The Guardian's Tim Jonze.

Whereas Imagine Dragons "threw the kitchen sink at the audience in an attempt to make that vital emotional connection." Luckily for Coldplay, such effects come almost too naturally to the British rockers who seem to soundtrack every wedding first dance, graduation party, or Olympic triumph.

Torres - Josh Anderson

With SXSW in full swing, Brooklyn via Nashville singer Torres gears up to perform her festival showcases in a move that she describes as both 'exciting' and 'hard work'.

Today (March 11th 2014) marks Torres' return to SXSW after a successful run at 2013's event. She'll be performing at The Javelina as part of Riot Act Media's official showcase, before hitting the Brooklyn Vegan Day Party at Red 7 on Thursday (March 13th) and playing for MISRA Records' official showcase on Friday at Lamberts. 'It's super DIY; you're sweating, you smell awful and you're carrying all of your heavy gear by hand from venue to venue', Torres explains about the SXSW set up. 'Then you play a quick set with no soundcheck and you strip it back down and go to your next one. I think that every musician should have to do that at some point. Because how else are you going to earn your stripes?'

First of all, there was Seth Rogen and Zac Efron’s Neighbors, which pits Rogen against Efron in a battle for dominance over a suburban street. In this comedy, directed by Nicholas Stoller from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, Rogen plays one half of a newly married couple, who are just settling into their cozy suburban nest. Efron and his band of frat boys, however, are there to ruin everything. According to THR, Neighbors got big laughs at its Paramount Theater premiere, so it might be one to look out for later in the year.

SXSW Festival

South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) is widely known as THE festival for emerging musical talent with artists both established and up-and-coming flocking from around the globe to Austin, Texas to offer the musical experience of a lifetime to eager festival goers. Having begun in 1987, the weekend event has seen some exciting acts, virtually all of which have shot to international recognition since their slot on the SXSW bill - and very deservedly.

It's a huge opportunity for fledgling bands across the world with such a vast line-up that takes over the whole of Austin for over a week. Unlike most festivals were an artist has to be signed or at least have an agent to feature in the line-up, SXSW does a great job at embracing unsigned talent. The weekend even sees dozens of secret gigs dotted around the city as no-one is ever quite sure of who is and who isn't playing. Prince, Arcade Fire and Jay-Z are just a few of many who have surprised and delighted event goers with their unexpected appearances, so make sure you keep an eye out this year. For now though, we're excited to give you ten top acts from across the planet that are well worth your time this March.

SXSW Memorable Moments: Drunk Bully Gets Knocked Out (Video)

Justin Timberlake Prince Nick Cave Kendrick Lamar Depeche Mode South by Southwest

Ok, so this year's SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, featured intimate performances from the likes of Prince, Justin Timberlake, the Sound City Players, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Green Day and Kendrick Lamar, though one memorable moment from 2013 appears to be making all the headlines. "Drunk bully gets knocked out" is a video that began pulling in the YouTube views midway through the festival, after one attendee captured an incident on the Austin streets on a smartphone. Of course, we don't condone violence, but isn't there something sweet about seeing a drunken bully stumble around hitting innocent bystanders, only to be given a taste of his own medicine? Sure there is.

After reading the video title, you just know what's going to happen. The only thing left to do is try and guess which of the SXSW festivalgoers gives the drunken bully a face full of fist before it actually happens. Eagle eyed watchers will have spotted the guy with the grey t-shirt asking his friend whether he has his back, around 10 seconds into the video. From there, he plans the whole thing out, waits for his moment, and BOOM.

Prince Brings SXSW To A Memorable Close With Mammoth Show!

Prince South by Southwest

Prince cause one heck of a 'Housequake' when he brought the Austin, Texas music and film festival South by Southwest to a memorable close on Saturday night, ensuring that the party kept going until the early hours as he even outlasted some of the fans. The pint-sized pop star went on until 3 am, bringing the festival to an end in pure Price style, by leading a brass band-backed, funk showcase that even featured hip hop legends A Tribe Called Quest.

In front of only 300 people in the tiny La Zona Rosa venue, Prince went on and on behind a giant video board, occasionally dropping his rock-star act to serve as band leader of the massive backing group he brought with him for Saturday night's grand spectacle. For a festival that drew in 2,200 bands and artists this year alone, Prince's intimate yet extraordinary performance topped off the week with a show-stopping display that saw him play such hits as 'Purple Rain', '1999' and even a Curtis Mayfield and a Michael Jackson cover. With a potential finisher coming to a close, Prince reminded his fans that the show wont be a brisk run through of some hits, telling the audience "Don't make me hurt you. You know how many hits I got?"

The show, which was sponsored by electronics manufacturer Samsung, was a strictly no cameras affair, as is the attitude of Prince towards the prospect of piracy. Still, it didn't stop the audience enjoying the hit-parade as it went on into the night - those that lasted anyway. Prince was competing with fellow festival closers Justin Timberlake and the Smashing Pumpkins, but it was easily the little purple man who did the festival justice with the final performance of the festival. Green Day, Dave Grohl, Vampire Weekend, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs also all performed at SXSW this week too, who knows how organisers are going to top it next year!

Is Record Breaking 'Spring Breakers' A Cult Movie In The Making?

Selena Gomez Harmony Korine James Franco South by Southwest

Though 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' dominated the box office for a second consecutive week - pulling In $42 million to take its takings to $282 million - it was another of James Franco's movies that performed the strongest. Harmony Korine's debauched drama 'Spring Breakers' pulled in just $270,000, though it did so from just three theaters, easily the best per-theater average of the weekend with $90,000. Oz averaged just $11,000 per theater.

The new movie is now likely to roll out across more theaters and should turn a profit for Muse Productions and A24, the tiny companies behind the film. It stars Franco as a thuggish drug dealer who charms college girls Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens into a world of crime, sex and violence. It looks to be Korine's biggest hit to date and represents Gomez and Hudgens' first serious roles outside of their Disney work - the former is best known for Wizards of Waverly Place while Hudgens found fame with High School Musical.

So far, critical reception has been strong too, with Spring Breakers earning a solid 70% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times said, "[Korine] turns his exploration into such a gonzo, outrageously funny party that it takes a while to appreciate that this is more of a horror film than a comedy," while Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine wrote, "Spring Breakers, beach-party fluff done as an art film by the reliably bizarre Harmony Korine, is a return to form for Franco."

Green Day At SXSW – Good To Have You Back, Boys

Green Day South by Southwest

The return of Green Day was stunted by the very public breakdown of Billie Joe Armstrong, after the punk legend was admitted to rehab following his onstage rant at the iHeartRadio Music Festival last September.

So when the Basket Case singers were announced to play SXSW, naturally, fans of the band were ecstatic at the idea of finally getting their beloved punk rockers back once again. And they are back, emphatically so. Billboard’s review of their triumphant return read: “It quickly became clear that the group was as ferocious and, occasionally, funny – and certainly as fun -- as ever. As the touring quintet tore into "99 Revolutions," one of eight songs from last year's trilogy, Armstrong commanded everyone in the theater to get off their (expletive) (expletives) and "go crazy." "This ain't no f***ing café!" Marking their homecoming to prominence, the SXSW Film Festival also premiered two new Green Day documentaries, "Broadway Idiot" and "Cuatro!" making this the perfect festival to stage a comeback.

Want To See Prince Perform With 21-Piece Band At SXSW?

Prince Dave Grohl Justin Timberlake Green Day Depeche Mode South by Southwest

250 lucky competition winners will get the chance to see Prince perform with a 21-piece band at the SXSW closing party this week. The legendary singer has been confirmed as a performer for one of the Texas' festival's closing shows, before an intimate crowd of contest winners, reports The Guardian.

Electronics giant Samsung will fund Prince's SXSW debut show, in the same way it bankrolled Kanye West's gig at a launch event in 2012. To be eligible for a ticket for the concert on Saturday (March 16, 2013), fans must be either SXSW badge-holders or owners of a Samsung Galaxy phone. The room at La Zona Rosa will be strictly limited to just 250 people, where Prince will perform a career-spanning set with his band. "Prince is a legend and true creative and musical genius who has been pushing the boundaries of music for more than 35 years," Todd Pendleton, Samsung's chief marketing officer, told Mashable. "Having Prince in Austin at his first SXSW show will truly be a one-night-only experience that our Samsung Galaxy owners and friends will remember for years to come."

It's certainly SXSW's biggest draw of the week, though the festival in Austin, Texas, is also scheduled to include performances from the likes of Green Day, Depeche Mode, Justin Timberlake and Dave Grohl's all-star group the Sound City Players.

SXSW Movers And Shakers: The Biggest Names And Best New Acts At South By Southwest 2013

South by Southwest Macklemore Solange Knowles Bastille Kendrick Lamar Nick Cave My Gold Mask Purity Ring Blue Hawaii Haim Metz

As the annual South by Southwest festival heats up over there in Austin, Texas, we’ve cast a jealous eye over the line-up and picked out five of some of the bigger names that you really should start queuing nice and early for and thrown in five hype bands for you, too, so you can get all hip with your friends, upon your return and start laying down all those “saw them first lines,” when they blow up next year.

First up, the acts that have already broken, that you really need to check out, or at least pretend that you did, if you were stuck in that queue for BBQ wings…

1. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – their ‘Thrift Shop’ song really blew up, especially online, where they challenged Carly Rae Jepsen’s chart record for ‘Call Me Maybe.’ No one can predict whether or not Macklemore’s going to be a one hit wonder or whether he’s got more up his sleeve, he’s known for putting on a good show, and all six of their shows are likely to be rammed.

Selena Gomez Brings 'Spring Breakers' Premiere To SXSW

Selena Gomez Harmony Korine Ashley Benson James Franco South by Southwest

Harmony Korine's new movie 'Spring Breakers' premiered at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, on Sunday (March 10, 2013) with its stars Selena Gomez, James Franco and Ashley Benson turning out for the screening. The movie follows four friends, (Benson, Gomez, Rachel Korine and Vanessa Hudgens) as they rob a bank to pay for their spring break trip, though get thrown in jail before being bailed out by a drug dealer, played by Franco.

The movie premiered at the Austin Convention Center, with Gomez showing off an elegant looking Cushine et Ochs frock. The dress featured cut-out detailing at the shoulders and across the midriff - Gomez certainly showed her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber what he was missing. The sexual and violent themes in 'Spring Breakers' are certainly a departure from Gomez's usual Disney movies, though speaking to FlavorWire at SXSW, director Korine said he isn't too concerned with analysis of his films. "It's funny for me to listen to it," he said, adding, "But I don't really have that much to do with that part of things, I don't have a relationship with that type of analysis. I usually make the movies, and I put them together, and I put them out into the world and then I just go home and cut off as much as possible from all that."

Spring Breakers runs this week at SXSW and opens Friday (March 15, 2013) on limited release. The movie receives a nationwide opening on March 22. Watch the Spring Breakers below.

Depeche Mode To Follow Up SXSW With Fall US Tour

Depeche Mode South by Southwest

All the hail the ‘Mode! That’s right, Depeche Mode, the multi-million selling and, recently, credibility-gaining synth-rock group have announced a new tour of the US for the summer and autumn, with their much-hyped appearance at this year’s SXSW just round the corner.

The group will kick off proceedings on August 22, 2013 in Detroit, to start a mighty 19 date-long tour that will run on until October 8th in Phoenix. In a statement, the band’s Dave Gahan said "I'm really looking forward to getting out there and performing. There are so many die hard Depeche Mode fans who have been with us every step of this journey that I can't wait to see.” The tour is in support of the group’s forthcoming studio LP Delta Machine, and Gahan commented “I also hope that we gain some new fans with the release of Delta Machine, and I look forward to exposing them to a great Depeche Mode live performance.”

Good Ol' Freda At SXSW – Beatles Assistant Freda Kelly Gets Her Moment

Beatles South by Southwest

Of all the unsung heroes during The Beatles reign as pop kings, none of them are more unsung that Freda Kelly: assistant to the legendary Liverpool band for 9 years.

Always graceful and loyal, Kelly never ‘sold’ her story; she never released intimate truths to the public. Now a film celebrating her work with the band has been handed it’s debut at SXSW. Such was Freda’s affection with the band, Ryan White – the director of the documentary – was granted use of four original Beatles songs to use in the piece. “That was amazing,” Freda told The Hollywood Reporter of the gesture. “To be quite truthful I felt positive but also negative. I’m usually quite cautious and didn’t know which way that was going to swing. I got a lump in my throat when I found out and I’m not an emotional person.” Before the film was given it’s premiere last night (Sat, 9), the film’s star explained how she was feeling. “All this is just starting to hit home with me,” Freda confessed. “I’ve always played things low-key and I’m now getting adjusted to it. I suppose my side of things should go down in history, for Beatle fans.” Kelly took control of The Beatles fan club, which, probably not to her knowledge, would turn out to be a huge undertaking. Especially considering she gave her home address for sending fan mail.

"She would go over the Beatles' houses and bring sacks and sacks of fan mail and make them sign it while they were watching television," White explained "Or she'd take a pillowcase over to Ringo's house and make him sleep on it and sign it ... Things like that just don't happen anymore."

Green Day To Make SXSW Debut After 25 Years In The Business

Green Day South by Southwest

Punk rockers Green Day will make their debut at Austin festival SXSW on March 15, 2013, some twenty-five years after first forming in Vallejo, California. The group - who released three albums last year - will screen two movies at the Paramount Theater before playing a set as part of the ACL Live series later that evening, at the Moody Theater.

One of the films - Broadway Idiot - will have its world premiere at the festival. The documentary follows frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's trials and tribulations during the adaptation of American Idiot as a Broadway musical. The second movie, ¡Cuatro!, chronicles Green Day's recording of their recent ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! trilogy - a process that preceded an arduous touring schedule, which ultimately landed Armstrong in rehabilitation for substance abuse. The band were forced to cancel and postpone shows until the 41-year-old completed his recovery though, refreshed and ready to rock, Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool resume their tour on March 28 in Chicago. The North American jaunt passes through Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia and other cities before heading to Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland and Russia.

The Green Day movies are open to SXSW ticketholders with Film, Gold & Platinum badges, Music Press Badge Holders, Film Wristband holders and Idiot Club winners. Those hoping to check out the live performance at the Moody Theater will require SXSW Music & Platinum badges or SXSW Showcasing Artists and Music Wristbands.
