Speech Debelle's new single, Studio Backpack Rap, is the new single from the anticipated second album, Freedom of Speech, which is due to be released in 2012. It follows on from Blaze Up A Fire, a song that was leaked by Speech herself in the wake of the London riots in August 2011.
Speech Debelle, real name Corynne Elliot, released her debut album, Speech Therapy in May 2009, through Big Dada. It went on to win the 2009 Mercury Prize, unexpectedly beating off stiff competition from the likes of Friendly Fires; Florence and the Machine; Kasabian and The Horrors. In the same year, Speech Debelle performed at Glastonbury.
Despite the critical acclaim, sales of Speech Therapy were poor. Nevertheless, Speech Debelle continued performing and writing new music. She appeared on Bonobo's track Sun Will Rise, which she also helped write. Her song Spinnin' has been rewritten for the London 2012 Olympics and will now feature Tinchy Stryder and Dionne Bromfield.
