Star Wars Actors React With Derision To 'Men-Only' Fan Edit Of 'The Last Jedi'

Star Wars Rian Johnson John Boyega

Star Wars actors John Boyega and Mark Hammill have reacted with incredulity and derision at a fan’s rather pathetic attempt to re-edit The Last Jedi with its female characters removed.

An angry fan of the franchise took the time to create a “men-only” version of The Last Jedi on file-sharing site Pirate Bay, reducing its running time to just 46 minutes, lopping out nearly two hours of material in response to what he (obviously a he) regarded as the over-population of the latest movie’s plot by female characters.

Laura Dern’s character of Admiral Holdo was cut out of the film entirely, with Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico both having their roles drastically reduced. Even the late Carrie Fisher didn’t escape unscathed, edited down so that Princess Leia no longer “scolds, questions nor demotes” the rebel fighter pilot Poe Dameron.

10 Most Anticipated Films Of 2018

Star Wars Benicio Del Toro Steve McQueen

As always, there are far too many sequels, spin-offs, remakes and reboots clogging the cinemas, but surely some will be worth the effort. Release dates are subject to change, of course, but there's still an exciting bunch spread throughout the year. Here are our most highly-anticipated films (not in chronological order).

1. Solo: A Star Wars Story (May) - This film may have been mired in production chaos, but we still want to see this origin story about Han, Chewie and Lando. And that cast is superb.

2. Widows (Nov) - Steve McQueen directs this female heist thriller starring Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez. More girl power: Red Sparrow (Mar), Ocean's 8 (Jun), Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Jul), Mary Poppins Returns (Nov).

Star Wars

Disney and Lucasfilm are bringing the year to end with a big bang, as it's been revealed that their latest episodic release in the 'Star Wars' franchise, 'The Last Jedi' will pass the $1 billion mark in the worldwide box office this weekend, even before the holiday that is New Year's Day on Monday, January 1, 2018.

Half of that total was amassed in the film's very first week of release, and whilst the competition wasn't as strong as it may have been for 'Star Wars' films of the past, it is worth noting it has beaten out contenders for the top spot each week, such as the new Dwayne Johnson-led film 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle'.

'Star Wars': Luke Skywalker Wanted Leia As His First Jedi Student

Star Wars

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) may have failed in helping cultivate new Jedi talent, but according to a new slice of information now given to fans, he didn't get the best start when his sister refused his offer of a spot as his first Jedi padawan.

Carrie Fisher made her return as Leia in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' back in 2015Carrie Fisher made her return as Leia in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' back in 2015

When the 'Star Wars' franchise returned for a new trilogy in 2015 with J.J. Abrams-directed flick 'The Force Awakens', fans discovered that Luke had been unsuccessful in bringing new Jedi into the world following the betrayal of one of his students. Because of the new evil he had helped to unleash upon the world, he put himself into exile and didn't let anybody know of his location. That would form the basis of the plot of 'Force Awakens', with Rey (Daisy Ridley) working under the orders of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) to find out exactly where the latter's brother had put himself.

However, he did admit that he clashed slightly with the director/screenwriter over what he deemed a very different interpretation of his character.

Disney Respond To Low Audience Score For 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

Star Wars

Despite the great critical reception to 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi', the film hasn't fared as well with the overarching general public who have seen the movie, and the sci-fi picture is the joint lowest rated in the episodic 'Star Wars' series to-date, on a par with 2015's 'The Force Awakens'.

Though this isn't the greatest news for director Rian Johnson and the rest of those who have worked on 'The Last Jedi', it hasn't stopped it from taking in a brilliant $450 million worldwide in its opening weekend box office. It's that which may have led to the positive outlook and response from Disney this weekend, who addressed the elephant in the room that is the negative audience reaction.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Takes In $450 Million At The Worldwide Opening Weekend Box Office

Star Wars

As was expected, 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' has had an incredible opening weekend in the worldwide box office, taking in $450 million across the globe and sitting just behind 2015's record-breaking 'Star Wars' release, 'The Force Awakens', which took in $529 million on its debut. That film of course did have the advantage of being the opener to a brand new trilogy, so the slight fall in opening weekend takings was to be expected.
