Disney Respond To Low Audience Score For 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

Star Wars

Despite the great critical reception to 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi', the film hasn't fared as well with the overarching general public who have seen the movie, and the sci-fi picture is the joint lowest rated in the episodic 'Star Wars' series to-date, on a par with 2015's 'The Force Awakens'.

Though this isn't the greatest news for director Rian Johnson and the rest of those who have worked on 'The Last Jedi', it hasn't stopped it from taking in a brilliant $450 million worldwide in its opening weekend box office. It's that which may have led to the positive outlook and response from Disney this weekend, who addressed the elephant in the room that is the negative audience reaction.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Takes In $450 Million At The Worldwide Opening Weekend Box Office

Star Wars

As was expected, 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' has had an incredible opening weekend in the worldwide box office, taking in $450 million across the globe and sitting just behind 2015's record-breaking 'Star Wars' release, 'The Force Awakens', which took in $529 million on its debut. That film of course did have the advantage of being the opener to a brand new trilogy, so the slight fall in opening weekend takings was to be expected.

Star Wars

With the world about to be introduced to his take on the Star Wars universe in less than a month with The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson has spoken for the first time about Disney’s planned new trilogy of Star Wars films.

The studio confirmed earlier this month that, as well as a stand-alone TV series, Johnson would be helming three more Star Wars movies in the coming years, which would be “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga” and “will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

Now, the 43 year old director has spoken publicly for the first time about the proposition of directing the fourth official Star Wars trilogy. “I’m just in the very beginning of starting to come up with what the new trilogy is going to be,” he told a fan event in Mexico this week.

Star Wars Disney Rian Johnson

Disney would appear to be extremely confident about Rian Johnson’s handling of the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, revealing that they have green-lit a further trilogy of movies, entirely under the director’s aegis.

The 43 year old director will be writing and directing the first instalment of the planned new trilogy of films, with Johnson’s long-time production partner Ram Bergman working with him.

Although the details are vague at this point, rather than continuing the classic Skywalker-based timeline of the nine existing films, this trilogy will focus on “new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

After starring in the hugely successful The Force Awakens a couple of years ago, Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson has admitted that he only signed up to its sequel The Last Jedi after having been dazzled by the movie’s script.

The 34 year old Irish actor is set to reprise his role as the evil General Hux - the former head of the First Order's Starkiller Base – in the much-anticipated eighth Star Wars movie this December. However, he revealed that he was extremely surprised when he read the movie’s script, written by director Rian Johnson.

Speaking to Collider, Gleeson, explained: “When I read it I needed to talk to him, and I think that's always a good sign. I was like, 'Wow there's some stuff there which is kind of - not scary but different to what I expected,' and that's a really, really nice thing. Is Obi Wan Kenobi Set For A Spin-Off 'Star Wars' Film?

Star Wars Ewan McGregor

A stand-alone film concerning the back-story of Obi Wan Kenobi is set to be added to the ever-expanding Star Wars universe, according to new reports.

John Boyega Says Carrie Fisher Gets An "Amazing Send-Off" In 'The Last Jedi'

Carrie Fisher John Boyega Star Wars

Carrie Fisher’s iconic Princess Leia is to be given an “amazing send-off” in the character’s final Star Wars film The Last Jedi, according to co-star John Boyega.

The young London-born actor, who plays Finn, revealed to American broadcaster ABC in a new interview this week that he shares “many scenes” with Fisher in the upcoming eighth instalment of the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi, and that the franchise “keeps her alive”.

Fisher died suddenly in December 2016 at the age of 60, and her final big-screen performance will come in The Last Jedi when it is released in cinemas at the end of this year. She had already completed filming her role in the movie at the time of her death, meaning no digital trickery has had to be used, but Leia will have no part in the ninth and final film set for 2019, and Boyega was asked about her final appearances and how the production team had treated it.
