Daniel Fleetwood, a terminally ill Star Wars fan, was granted his dying wish to view The Force Awakens on Thursday, nearly two months before it is released in cinemas. Fleetwood suffers from an aggressive form of cancer that has spread to 90% of his lungs and has been given just months to live.

The 31 year old Texan was able to watch an early cut of the highly anticipated film, which is due out in US theatres on 18 December, his wife Ashley Fleetwood confirmed on Facebook. “Daniel just finished watching an unfinished version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!!!”Ashley wrote.

“We would like to thank the awesomely talented [director] Jj Abrams for calling us yesterday to tell us Daniel was getting his wish granted!” Her husband’s wish was granted after a campaign hashtagged #ForceForDaniel went viral on social media.

Writing on twitter, star Mark Hamil who supported the campaign, shared his joy after finding out Daniel’s wish had been granted. ‘I just read this and am elated for Daniel & his family! Thanks to the powers-that-be for making his dream come true,’ Hamil tweeted.

On Thursday Disney said the screening for had taken place and “all involved were happy to be able to make it happen”. It was not revealed where the screening had been held, but it was most likely done at Fleetwood’s home.

Earlier this month Fleetwood told People magazine: “If I got to see the movie, I might actually die from happiness. Growing up, I would watch the movies over and over and analyse every little detail. I hope I get to see what happens.”
