Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has given smoking and drinking after his frightening heart scare earlier this month (Aug14).

The rockers halted their European tour after Parfitt was hospitalised in Croatia with heart problems. He underwent surgery back in his native U.K. to fix a complication with a graft that was inserted during his quadruple heart bypass in 1997.

Despite the operation in the 1990s and a subsequent heart attack in 2011, Parfitt continued drinking heavily and smoking, but he is convinced the latest scare is a wake-up call and has not touched alcohol or cigarettes since.

The 65-year-old rocker tells Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, "That part of my life is over as I do not want to die, I want to live... I've had 50 years of smoking and drinking and abusing my body... There comes a time when you have to look at yourself and think, 'Right, that's it, it's now time for a change'. All my life I've defied the doctor's orders, thinking that I'm made of steel... But as stupid as this may sound, I'm pleased I've had this heart attack because I couldn't see a way out of my bad habits."

Parfitt already notices a difference, adding, "When I wake up in the morning I want to get up and get the day going and I can't tell you how much better I feel... I realise now for the first time in my life that if I carry on (drinking and smoking) I will die."

The rocker was due to return to the stage with his bandmates at a gig in Norfolk, England on Saturday (23Aug14).
