This week Foxcatcher will be one of the movies premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. The dark true story adaptation is bound to turn a lot of heads, especially with Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo leading the cast of Bennett Miller's intriguing new picture.

Based on the real life story of US wrestling coach John du Pont, Foxcatcher is another gritty sports drama that's probably headed straight for the awards after its wider release in November. The movie will be competing for the prized Palme D'Or at the prestigious film festival and the trailer gives us enough to suspect that Foxcatcher will be one of the key competitors.

Carell is unrecognisable as John du Pont, the paranoid schizophrenic millionaire, whose obsession with sponsoring Olympic wrestling hopefuls leads to murder. Meanwhile Ruffalo stars as du Pont's longtime friend and an Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler and Tatum plays Mark Schultz, Dave's younger brother.

It's clear from the dark and slightly unsettling mood of the trailer that this won't be a movie preoccupied with celebrating all-American sports heroes to slow motion scenes and an uplifting soundtrack. Instead, Bennett's movie promises to show us the unsightly underbelly of a violent sport and the deranged individuals it attracts.

Film fans will know Carell predominantly for the undercurrent of comedy he brings to each of his roles, such as Anchorman, Little Miss Sunshine and Evan Almighty. So it may come as a surprise that he was Miller's first choice to play the mentally unstable sports coach who commits the unthinkable.

Not to worry, says Miller, it was all part of the plan: "I didn't want to hire an actor who you might presuppose was capable of murder because one thing that was repeated among many, many people who were there was that nobody believed du Pont was capable of doing what he did," the Capote director told THR.

"His presence and his place in people's minds as a character was really intriguing to me because there is something benign about the way we perceive him and yet he's a comic, which is to say that beneath all that is something very different than what we see," Miller noted.

"This guy who was extremely wealthy and had no real occupation for himself hatches this idea that he is going to be the coach of the best wrestlers in America and lead them to the Olympics and get glory from it," mused Miller, adding "The whole situation seems crazy, the whole arrangement."

After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Foxcatcher will open on the 14th November in the USA.
