Mindhorn Trailer

In the late 80s, Richard Thorncroft (Julian Barratt) was the most famous police detective on television, but fast-forward to the present day and he's balding, ungroomed and trying to convince himself that he is exactly where he needs to be in life with desperate daily positive affirmations. Fate does have one more adventure in store for the actor, however. A suspected serial killer named Paul Melly (Russell Tovey) has escaped from a secure unit at Darkmoor Hospital and is now taunting Isle of Man police that more will die unless he can speak to Detective Mindhorn. The police are well aware that Mindhorn is just a TV character, but they try their luck and enlist the help of the actor who plays him nonetheless. Unfortunately, Thorncroft turns out to be much less efficient than his onscreen persona, as much as he'd like to believe otherwise.

The BAFTA winning actress, comedian and writer sadly passed away on Saturday (June 2) after a long battle with cancer.

Tributes have poured in for Caroline Aherne, who sadly passed away yesterday at the age of 52, after a long battle with cancer. A TV fixture throughout the nineties, Aherne will be best remembered for her Mrs Merton character and sitcom ‘The Royle Family’, which she starred in and co-wrote with Craig Cash.

The Secret Life Of Pets Review

Very Good

From the team behind Despicable Me and Minions, this high-energy adventure makes up for its rather simplistic story by filling the screen with lively characters, silly dialog and colourful animation. There's nothing terribly distinctive about the movie, as most of the gags feel recycled and everything bounces across the surface without generating any resonance either in the humour or emotions. But it's a lot of fun while it lasts.

In a cosy Manhattan apartment, the happy rescue dog Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) lives with his owner Katie (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Ellie Kemper). The moment she steps out of the door on the way to work, he's already bored and waiting for her to come home. So he hangs out with the other pets in the neighbourhood, including lovelorn pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) and food-obsessed cat Chloe (Lake Bell). Then Katie brings home another stray, the gigantic brown furball Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who immediately starts challenging Max's alpha-dog status. As war breaks out between them, they find themselves stranded in the city, caught up with a sewer-dwelling gang of abandoned pets led by the adorable but intense bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart). Meanwhile, Gidget and Chloe recruit some help to find them, including a grumpy hawk (Albert Brooks) and an ageing basset hound (Dana Carvey).

The plot basically consists of a series of chaotic chase sequences that build up to a climactic scene straight out of a Die Hard movie. Each character and plot element is over-constructed, which eliminates any sense of honest emotion or loose interaction, but the characters are likeable simply because they're so ridiculous. The animators use a lot of colour and a tactile variety of furry textures. And the actors have a lot of fun with the characters. Hart is, of course, the scene-stealer as the fast-talking kingpin who uses his cuteness as a weapon. And while C.K. and Stonestreet are endearing as the story's protagonists, it's Slate and Bell who win over the audience in the funniest, most complex roles.

Coogan was snapped travelling at 54 mph in a 30 mph zone in Brighton in October 2015.

British actor and comedian Steve Coogan has been banned from driving for a month after he was caught speeding in Brighton in October last year.

The 50 year old actor, behind comic creations such as Alan Partridge, pleaded guilty to driving at nearly twice the speed limit in the Sussex city on October 14th 2015. He was snapped in his £25,000 Mazda MX-5 SE sports car travelling at 54 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone, according to Sussex Police.

Coogan, thought to be worth approximately £7 million, was not present at the hearing at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (February 24th), but he was represented via his solicitor.

The comedy will be moving from BBC Two to Sky Atlantic.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon will be taking to the road again for a third series of ‘The Trip’. This time the pair will sample the cuisine of Spain, taking in Cantabria, the Basque region, Aragon, Castile-La Mancha, and Andalusia. The third series will be shown on Sky Atlantic, with the first two having aired on BBC Two.

Brydon confirmed the news on twitter with the comedian announcing, “The Trip is returning, this time to Spain via Sky Atlantic. Shooting in the Autumn. Hurrah!” He later responded to a fan who asked if the new series would follow the same format, by joking, ‘Same format? Same jokes!’

'Stan & Ollie’ focuses on the legendary double act’s 1953 UK tour.

British actor Steve Coogan has been cast alongside John C. Reilly in a new biopic about legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. Coogan will play Stan Laurel, with Reilly taking the role of his partner Oliver Hardy. The film’s script has been penned by Jeff Pope, who worked with Coogan on Philomena and it will be directed by Filth's Jon S. Baird.

Steve Coogan has been cast as Stan Laurel in a new biopic.

Titled Stan & Ollie, the film will focus on the duo’s 1953 tour of UK variety halls and is described as an "emotional tribute to two of the funniest men in movie history,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is being developed by BBC Films and produced by Fable Pictures and Sonesta Films.

The 'Alan Partridge' actor was trapped by a landslide caused by the huge rainfall near Thirlmere reservoir in Cumbria.

The devastating fallout in northern Britain from Storm Desmond over the weekend has even affected the celebrity world, as comedian Steve Coogan mentioned that he had been caught in a landslide while travelling and forced to spend the night in his car.

The 49 year old actor and writer, speaking to ‘BBC Breakfast’ on Tuesday morning (December 8th) about his new autobiography ‘Easily Distracted’, said that he was visiting his hometown of Coniston in Cumbria over the weekend when his car became trapped by a landslide while driving near Thirlmere reservoir, and was stuck there until a friend dug him out the following morning.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Review

Extraordinary

In bringing his iconic 1990s radio and TV character to the big screen, Coogan refreshingly refuses to play to American audiences: this film is purely British in its story, setting and characters. And as it gleefully redefines almost every action movie cliche imaginable, it's also one of the funniest films of the year. This is party due to the hilariously astute script, but also because Alan Partridge is both riotously embarrassing and utterly loveable.

As we meet him this time , Alan (Coogan) is trying to save his job at North Norfolk Digital when the radio station is bought by a corporation and turned in to Shape ("The way you want it to be"). In the process, Alan gets his colleague Pat (Meaney) sacked, and at the Shape launch party Pat goes postal with a shotgun, taking the staff hostage. As the police close in around the station, Alan becomes the chief negotiator, realising that this can only help boost his fame. But as he works on increasing his own publicity, Pat is menacing his on-air sidekick Simon (Key), while his offbeat security guard friend Michael (Greenall) finds a place to hide and his assistant (Montagu) has her own encounter with the media.

After all these years, Coogan is able to completely vanish into Alan's distinctive personality, saying all the wrong things at the wrong times while constantly getting distracted by irrelevant details. He only ever does the right thing by mistake. Yes, Alan is a buffoon, but he isn't stupid. Coogan plays him so perfectly that we can't help but like Alan even with his distinctive flaws. And the film actually generates a real sense of menace in this mini-Die Hard siege scenario, blending real danger with inspired physical comedy. And virtually every line of dialog has a joke in it.

The first picture of Stephen Frears' latest film, 'Philomena', was released yesterday. The upcoming biopic stars Steve Coogan and Judi Dench as Philomena Lee and Martin Sixsmith.

Stephen Frears' new film Philomena stars Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. The first picture of the film was released yesterday (Monday 16th July) and shows the two British actors in an evidently emotional scene. Coogan looks at Dench with a concerned expression as she holds a photograph.

The film, directed by Frears, follows one woman's journey to discover a son she was forced to give up fifty years before. Young Philomena Lee (played by Sophie Kennedy Clark), according to the BBC's synopsis, fell pregnant in Ireland in 1952: she was then taken to a convent as a 'fallen woman'. As a consequence of her strict surroundings, Philomena was encouraged to offer her baby for adoption.

Alan Partridge Film Alpha Papa Gets Norwich Premiere After Successful Campaign

The Norwich based presenter will come home for his film's bow.

The new Alan Partridge film – Alpha Papa – is to be granted its premiere in Norwich – the hometown of the film’s protagonist – after a successful online campaign. The film was supposed to premiere in London, but, much to the dismay of 80% of the U.K’s film press, it’s been pushed up to first class cinemas of Norfolk.

In a statement, Partridge, played by Steve Coogan, said: "You can imagine how hurt and litigious I felt when people said I was planning to debut my movie in London instead of Norwich, or that I'd allowed my head to be turned by the prospect of big city fame. Any suggestions I've hastily cobbled together the lunchtime Norwich screening in response to a local Twitter campaign will be met with the full force of the law."

Despicable Me 2 Review

Very Good

With the same teams of writers and directors, this sequel sticks closely to the winning formula of the 2010 original: pile on so much snappy humour and colourful wackiness that no one will worry about the plot. So the film is sweetly engaging and relentlessly hilarious, but there's nothing particularly inventive or memorable about it.

After discovering his less villainous side, Gru (Carell) is now trying to go legit with his sidekick Dr Nefario (Brand) and their horde of mischievous yellow minions. Gru is also enjoying the challenges of being a father to his lively adopted daughters Margo, Agnes and Edith (Cosgrove, Fisher and Gaier). Then he meets the undercover spy Lucy (Wiig) and her boss Silas (Coogan), who ask for his help hunting down the bad guy who stole a secret government chemical. Gru reluctantly takes the job, and his suspicion falls on Eduardo (Bratt), not because he looks just like former fellow villain El Macho, but because Margo is in love with his surly teen son (Arias).

As before, the film mixes cute family sentimentality with wacky cartoon slapstick in which everyone gets smashed, pounded and blown up but emerges unscathed to face the next bit of outrageous mayhem. The violent undercurrents are sometimes a little disturbing, especially when children are talking about murder, but the movie's wildly ridiculous tone constantly reminds us to stop taking anything seriously. Thankfully, we're constantly distracted by the whizzy, action-packed animation, which makes especially witty use of the 3D.

Despicable Me 2 - Clips

Former evil-doer Gru, who once attempted the career-defining heist of stealing the moon, has seemingly left a life of evil deeds and landed himself a new kind of job. Albeit fairly reluctantly and without actually having a choice, he has been enlisted by Silas Ramsbottom of the Anti-Villain League on a world-rescue mission as a new villain arrives in town, to the delight and pride of his young adopted daughters Agnes, Edith and Margo. He and Agent Lucy Wilde must now embark on a new kind of adventure with the help of Gru's faithful, blabbering Minions. But with interfering neighbours coupled with his girls becoming older and smarter, saving the world from a ruthless rogue seems the least of his worries.

'Despicable Me 2' is the wonderful follow-up to the Golden Globe nominated 2010 animated comedy 'Despicable Me'. It has been produced by the geniuses behind 'Ice Age' and 'Shark Tale' comes 'Despicable Me 2' and sees the thrilling return of directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud ('The Lorax') with screenwriters Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio ('The Santa Clause 2', 'Horton Hears a Who!', 'Hop'). Already with an award nomination under its belt (from the Golden Trailer Awards), this adorable flick will be released on June 28th 2013.

The Look Of Love Review

Michael Winterbottom vividly recreates swinging 1960s London in this biopic about one of Soho's most notorious figures. It's a lively and attention-grabbing film, but the cast and filmmakers never create a character we can identify with or care about, which leaves the film feeling a bit meaningless. And even if we're interested in the history, we are never able to feel the emotions.

As he did for Winterbottom in 24 Hour Party People, Steve Coogan plays a colourful real-life figure, this time Paul Raymond, also known as the King of Soho. Raymond made his fortune through strip clubs and lap-dancing venues, then expanded into publishing men's magazines before purchasing large swathes of property in London's artiest district. But his marriage to Jean (Friel) was strained by his rampant womanising, including a long-term relationship with actress-model Fiona Richmond (Egerton). And the main woman in Paul's life was his daughter Debbie (Poots), who was in line to inherit his fortune when she died of a heroin overdose in 1992.

The film is framed with Debbie's funeral, showing Raymond at his lowest point. But then, even when he was living the high life, his self-obsession casts a heavy shadow. Everyone in this story is just as lost in their own addictions. And it's sad to see Raymond himself never able to move on from his own early years, amassing a £1 billion fortune, which he left to Debbie's children when he died in 2008. Coogan bravely never tries to get us to sympathise with Raymond, delivering a focussed performance that's darkly bittersweet. Poots adeptly captures Debbie's inability to see her own talents as she falls into a whirlwind of drug abuse. And Friel and Egerton get the most engaging roles as woman thrown aside along the way.

Upcoming biopic 'The Look of Love' based on the life of glamour entrepreneur Paul Raymond hit London yesterday (April 15th 2013) in its premiere with all the pizazz that Soho could offer.

'Alan Partridge' star Steve Coogan still seemed a little in character, shunning a tie and opting for an eye-catching shirt with several top buttons undone when he hit the red carpet at the Curzon Soho in London alongside his glamorous co-stars Anna Friel and Tamsin Egerton who play his onscreen wife and daughter respectively. While Anna was positively glowing in her ankle length yellow and gold dress that certainly matched up to the glorious English Springtime, Tamsin opted for a white, long-sleeved, floor-length number that flattered her elegant frame. Former 'Mock The Week' host Chris Addison and current host Dara O'Briain also made appearances on the red carpet having both featured in the biographical comedy, as well as 'Boy Meets Girl' star James Lance who played Raymond's business associate Carl Snitcher in the movie.

The Croods is witty with sharp characters who are well written, voiced and drawn while Jack the Giant Slayer is smarter and funnier than we expect. We are also rather excited by a first look at Kick Ass 2 as well as a chilling new trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness.

This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Look for a huge push for must-have spin-off merchandise for this one, as it's packed with cuddly creatures. And hope it does well at the box office, because it would make a great franchise too.

Doing the publicity rounds this week, Gerard Butler has been out promoting his new White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Flitting between New York and Los Angeles to appear on every chat show possible, it's no wonder that he was somewhat fed-up by the time he reached David Letterman's Manhattan studio. Of course, the paparazzi caught it on camera as he lost his patience with a fan trying to get multiple autographs. But he manages to recovers his usual charm.

The full trailer for 'Despicable Me 2' has finally arrived with plenty of laughs to go around.

The Despicable Me 2 trailer is finally here seeing the return of your favourite Despicable Me characters including former supervillain Gru, his beloved foster children and his faithful Minions, as well as some entertaining new additions to the Despicable Me cast.

We got the slightly bizarre teaser over a year ago showing nothing more than the funny yellow aliens that serve Gru (Steve Carell) performing an adorable rendition of The Beach Boys' hit song 'Barbara Ann'; it certainly managed to keep the plot under wraps though it was far from a disappointing introduction into the much anticipated sequel to this Golden Globe nominated flick. Following Gru's evil plot to steal a shrink ray and hijack the moon in the first film, he adopted three young girls named Agnes (Elsie Fisher), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Margo (Miranda Cosgrove) after taking pity on their misfortune. This time round, it looks like Gru has taken fatherhood in his stride and devious deeds seem to be the last thing he's thinking about, particularly as the eldest girl is getting, well, a little too old for his liking. Just as the prospect of a quiet life looms, however, he is abducted by a feisty agent (Kristen Wiig) from the Anti-Villain League, headed by the pompous Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) who wish to use him to help save the world from a new evil - and Gru is well up for the challenge!

While his minions attempt to rescue him from this difficult new project, he is ultimately forced to agree to the mission after facing formidable, if ridiculously named, company director Silas Ramsbottom. It's Gru's first time on the side of good - but will he find it a suitable career move from his former immoral ways? Or will this new evil give him plenty of new ideas?

'Despicable Me 2' was the hugely anticipated follow-up to Golden Globe nominated animation 'Despicable Me'. From the producers of 'Ice Age' and 'Shark Tale', it has been directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud ('The Lorax') alongside writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio ('The Santa Clause 2', 'Horton Hears a Who!', 'Hop'). Featuring that smash hit single 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams, the film was released in July 2013.

Alan Partridge makes a return as the superficial radio nitwit we all love in the upcoming next instalment of the Partridge franchise 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa'. The trailer now released shows Alan discussing movie titles with his associates, being particularly drawn to the title 'Colossal Velocity'. When the title 'Alpha Papa' is suggested, appropriately representing his initials in the radio alphabet and loosely meaning 'top daddy', he is underwhelmed, sticking as usual to his own thoughts. The film takes place in Norwich, Norfolk where his employer North Norfolk Digital is about to be taken over in a brutal siege by a major media company and given the new name, Shape.

The Alan Patridge movie is one of the most highly anticipated comedy flicks of the year.

The Alan Partridge movie may still be four months away, but here's something to whet your appetite - the first ever teaser trailer, featuring Tim Key and of course, Steve Coogan as Partridge himself. It's been a hard slog for Coogan and writer Armando Iannucci to get Norfolk's favourite radio host to the big screen, and rumours about a potential feature film began in August 2004. At the time, the actor said, "It's always been my plan to make Alan go global. It's what he lives for really, not just doing the show on Radio Norwich." Things got serious one year later, when Coogan's production firm Baby Cow officially announced that the movie was in the pipeline, though a planned plot involving an al-Qaeda siege was scrapped after the London bombings.

Steve Coogan stars as Paul Raymond in Michael Winterbottom's 'The Look Of Love'

'The Look of Love' trailer appears to suggest Steve Coogan turns in one of his very best performances, as Paul Raymond, the porn mogul and once the UK's wealthiest man. Michael Winterbottom's new movie, which won acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in January, follows Raymond's rise from mind-reader on Clacton Pier to the 'King of Soho.' Whilst his empire grew, his family life began to suffer, and the trailer for 'The Look of Love' hints at turmoil, scandal and lies.

Winterbottom's movie follows Raymond as he opens new clubs across the entertainment district of London and publishes men's magazines 'Razzle' 'Mayfair' and 'Men's Only,' though things begin to unravel when he embarks on a whirlwind affair with a young star despite being married to Jean, one of his strippers.

What Maisie Knew Trailer

Maisie is a 6-year-old girl whose parents are the veteran rock star Susanna and the art dealer Beale. As high profile as they are, Maisie is hardly living the high life as her selfish and ignorant folks never seem to have time to think about being parents and when their rocky relationship ends in a fiery divorce, she is used merely as a weapon in court as the bitter custody battle gets underway. Being passed from mother to father and vice versa hardly has the effect of making each parent want to spend more time with her to make up for their time apart as Susanna is often busy on tour and Beale takes many long work trips away. As a result, their respective new spouses Lincoln and Margo (also her ex-Nanny) are forced to take on the responsibility of caring for Maisie together and the young girl finds herself becoming happier by the day.

This is a heart-warming movie challenges the idea of child custody and is viewed through the eyes of an innocent girl who tries to construct a new family after her own is bitterly torn apart. Based on the novel of the same name by Henry James, this adaptation of 'What Maisie Knew' has been directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel ('Suture', 'Uncertainty', 'Bee Season') and written by Carroll Cartwright ('Dungeons & Dragons', 'Where the Money Is') and Nancy Doyne in her feature film debut.

Giving the fans what they want - the Alan Partridge movie is coming...

The Alan Partridge Movie seems to be taking shape. Footage from an eye witness in Norwich shows the filming taking place, in which a ridiculously slow car chase, involving the big yellow Radio Norwich van driving at about 0.3mph, followed by a legion of police cars. Presumably Lexi.

Reports suggest that the movie will see Alan's radio station, North Norfolk Digital taken over by a giant media conglomerate and renamed Shape. And Partridge fans can sit back and relax in the sweet knowledge that some of the sitcom’s favourite characters, including his PA Lynn, Geordie friend/BP garage worker Michael and rival DJ Dave Clifton, will all return for the feature length version of AP.

2013: The Year Of Porn? Steve Coogan's The Look Of Love Sundance Success Is The Tip Of The Iceberg

Good reviews have been pouring in for Steve Coogan’s turn as the King of Soho Paul Raymond in his new film The Look Of Love followings its airing at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. The film is another team-up between Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom, the pair most famously getting together for 2002’s 24 Hour Party People, and alongside a glut of positive acclaim, it’s been picked up by IFC Films for development.

With the success of Coogan’s The Look Of Love, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon’s Addiction, at the Sundance Film Festival, it really does seem to be the year of porn. We don’t mean that the porn industry is set to release some of the biggest grossing films this year; but with The Look Of Love focusing on the real life smut baron Paul Raymond, founder of adult UK magazines like Esquire and Mayfair, and Don Jon’s Addiction’s main character being addicted to pornography, it’s a subject that’s clearly become fashionable to take on. If those two weren’t enough, then James Franco’s Interior. Leather Bar also screened over the weekend, a movie inspired by rumors that hardcore porn footage had to be cut out of 1980 Al Pacino movie Cruising.

We could look beyond even the Sundance event too, with Paul Schrader’s Lindsay Lohan-starring The Canyons also featuring real life porn star James Deen in its own tale of sexual depravity. Though that film is without a buyer, what is clear is that Coogan’s turn as Raymond is just the tip of the iceberg: 2013 appears to be the year where film makers decide to discuss the fascination with porn.

Ruby Sparks Review

Excellent

A romantic comedy with a dark twist, this film gets under the skin as it knowingly explores both the writing process and the nature of relationships. It also gives its cast a lot to play with in scenes that feature both broad slapstick and much more serious drama.

Paul Dano stars as Calvin, a writer who struck lightning with his first novel at age 19 and hasn't been able to write anything since. His brother (Messina) teases him about his future, his agent (Mandvi) is pushing him to write a new novel, and his therapist (Gould) just wants him to write something, anything. So he starts typing up a story about the girl (Kazan) who appears in his dreams. Then there she is, Ruby Sparks, in his kitchen! Sure he's officially losing his mind, he's shocked to discover that others can see her too. So he brings her into his life as his girlfriend, even introducing her to his hippie mother and stepdad (Benning and Banderas).

The film starts out as a breezy comedy, and Dano plays these scenes for laughs, including several broadly silly set-pieces as Calvin first meets Ruby. But the undertone very quickly starts turning serious, as we begin to understand the central themes about how we relate to our partners. Would we control their behaviour if we could? Get rid of annoying habits? Make them be more like our idea of the perfect spouse? But of course, that would cause a whole new set of problems.

Following the evil schemes of Gru in 'Despicable Me' involving the hijacking of the moon with his little yellow minions and wicked cohort Dr. Nefario, 'Despicable Me 2' sees their anticipated return in the summer of 2013. Having competed against his rival Vector by going one up from his Egyptian Pyramid theft and successfully stealing the moon, the first film saw Gru adopting three young girls and giving up the stolen rock to rescue them from the ruthless super-villain. Does his success make Gru learn his lesson and become a decent man after his newfound fatherly affection for his girls, or will he and his minions return with an even more abominable plot to become the most notorious super-villain in the world?

Ruby Sparks tells the story of a successful young novelist who starts to suffer from writer's block. Eventually, though, Calvin makes a huge development and invents Ruby Sparks; a beautiful, red-headed female character who he begins to fall madly in love with - despite her being a figment his imagination. or so he thinks. A week later he finds her casually sprawled on his couch and although Calvin tries to pass her off as the hallucinations of an over-active imagination, it soon becomes clear that his words have manifested themselves into a real-life person. More accurately, a real-life love interest.

The Other Guys Review

Excellent

A sharp script sets this fast and furious action comedy apart from other brainless summer movies. And it's played with such deadpan precision that it keeps us laughing from start to finish, even when things get bogged down by the plot.

New York cops Gamble and Hoitz (Ferrell and Wahlberg) have been relegated to unimportant positions by two teams of flashier detectives (Jackson/Johnson and Wayans/Riggle). But when Gamble arrests a millionaire investor (Coogan) for a minor infraction, he and Hoitz are plunged into a murky case involving a ruthless Aussie goon (Stevenson) and bribed city officials. Even their captain (Keaton) tells them to leave it alone, but Gamble can't let go and Hoitz sees this as a chance to stop being the "other guys".

Coffee And Cigarettes Review

Coffee and cigarettes. What is it about this magical combination of caffeine and cancer that's so irresistible to millions of café and pub patrons around the world? Despite its title, don't go looking to Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes for the answer. A series of vignettes populated by an all-star cast of actors and musicians, the film has the laid-back attitude of its tobacco-smoking, java-gulping protagonists, each of whom spends his screen time ruminating on a host of arbitrary issues involving class, race, and physics. However, like its central delicacy, Jarmusch's comedy is apt to provide a slight, delectable buzz but little nutritional value.

Jarmusch enlists a diverse cast of indie stars and former colleagues for this modest ensemble, but his uncharacteristically wheezy writing frequently undermines the film's wry humor. Cate Blanchett, in a dual performance, plays an arrogant version of herself as well as her skuzzy, jealous cousin, but the piece's portrait of jealousy and resentment loses steam after you become accustomed to seeing the actress talk to herself. Similarly, The White Stripes' Meg and Jack White provide a brief lesson on inventor Nikola Tesla's Tesla Coil, but save for the creepy, Mao Tse-tung-inspired portrait of Lee Marvin hanging on the wall behind them, the skit is nothing more than an overly long non sequitur. And even a brief appearance by Steve Buscemi can't rescue an insipid bit about two argumentative African-American twins talking racial politics in a Memphis diner.

Sweet Revenge Review

Supposedly a black comedy, Sweet Revenge gives us Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Niell, and Kristin Scott Thomas in an asinine homage to Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, with Carter and Neill playing a "game" to drive a nuisance in each other's life over the edge. The comedy is certainly lost with rare exception here, with much of the film playing out while you sit back in your chair, just waiting for some inevitable spin to make it worthwhile in the end. Too bad, there isn't one.

Around The World In 80 Days (2004) Review

The 50-year-old Jackie Chan has lost a step or two. This remake of the award winning 1956 classic Around the World in 80 Days is clearly just a vehicle to further his career; unfortunately it mainly showcases his age. His fight scenes are laughably choreographed and his acting comes across as forced.

Chan's problems are indicative of many others faced by this overblown $110 million mess. Even as production was finishing, a distributor had not been found. Not surprisingly, Disney eventually picked up the film. Yet, what is surprising is Disney's decision not to distribute a challenging film like Fahrenheit 9/11, but instead to release this one, a flavorless and disgraceful remake.

Around The World In 80 Days Review

Jules Verne might have a hard time recognizing his source material in the Jackie Chan action-comedy adaptation of "Around the World in 80 Days," but for non-purists, it's easy to forgive the many liberties taken in this funny, fleet-footed summer-matinee romp.

Although the ostensible main character is still screwball Victorian inventor Phileas Fogg (lanky Steve Coogan) -- who wagers against the stuffed shirts of the English scientific establishment that he can circumnavigate the globe in the titular time period -- this version of the story more literally revolves around Passepartout (Chan), Fogg's valet who has his own reasons for traipsing across continents.

Passepartout has stolen a jade Buddha from a Bank of London vault in order to return it to its rightful place: his native village in China. Fogg is his ticket to safe passage -- or so he thinks.

Ella Enchanted Review

Following in the footsteps of the "Fractured Fairy Tales" cartoons, "The Princess Bride," "Ever After," "Shrek" and "A Knight's Tale" -- but never quite matching any of their wit or novelty -- "Ella Enchanted" is an amusingly self-aware fable of handsome princes, evil kings and one very plucky heroine caught up in a magic spell.

Aiming at the tween-ager crowd that made a hit of "The Princess Diaries," 2001's more modern twist on such girlish daydreams, light-hearted director Tommy O'Haver ("Get Over It," "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss") enlists "Diaries" charming star Anne Hathaway in the title role as a medieval teenager who was hexed at birth with an obedience spell by an irksome but well-meaning fairy (Vivica A. Fox, stuck in a mock-ghetto-fabulous stereotype).

Having grown up quite stubborn yet unable to resist any demand upon her, Ella manages to get through life keeping her curse on the QT until her widowed father brings home a wicked stepmother (Joanna Lumley) and two even worse and obnoxiously over-played step-sisters (Lucy Punch and Jennifer Higham), who quickly and cruelly figure out that they can make Ella their plaything.
