Michelle Obama Stevie Wonder

Michelle Obama got the treat of a lifetime when one of her favourite musical artists, Stevie Wonder, performed a sensational medley just for her on her last late night television appearance as the First Lady of the United States. It was an emotional moment, but also a very special tribute to an amazing woman.

Stevie Wonder performed a medley of his iconic hits 'Isn't She Lovely' and 'My Cherie Amour' in a piano session on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon' last night (January 11th 2017), but changed a few of the words to reflect his feelings on Michelle Obama.

Stevie Wonder Talks About 'Black Lives Matter' Movement During Hyde Park Gig

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder has urged his fans to “choose love over hate” in a tribute to the Black Lives Matter campaign, during his massive gig in London’s Hyde Park at the weekend.

The iconic R&B singer addressed the 65,000-strong crowd that had turned out to see him perform on Sunday (July 10th) at the British Summer Time Festival in central London, at the end of a week that had been devastated by deadly race-related violence in America.

Wonder told his fans to live in hope that things will improve “in this horrible time we’re living in”, and to treat everybody with respect. “I encourage you to choose love over hate. It's just that simple. Choose love over hate, right over wrong, kind over meanness. Hope over no hope at all,” he said.

In 1976, Wonder released a Diamond-certified classic double album that is repeatedly praised as one of the greatest albums of all time. Now Wonder will be revisiting that landmark time of his career by bringing it to a UK audience of 65,000 in July on the Great Oaks stage.

Calling Festival - Stevie Wonder, London, Jun 29 2014

As a lifelong fan of Stevie Wonder's recordings from the 1960s and 70s (plus the odd gem from the largely best-averted 1980s), I have avoided checking him out live over the years, for reasons I can't fully explain. Perhaps it's that thing where you're so into something that you just don't want to be let down by some potential horror that it's all gone terribly wrong over the years and you don't want your love for the stuff tainted by a bad experience.

Calling Festival - Stevie Wonder, London, Jun 29 2014

And so it was, heading down to Clapham Common on a sunny summer's afternoon to see Stevie, I had mixed feelings of seeing the man himself - the legend, the "genius", as he was originally known back in the early days - and of the possibility that the pedestal upon which I'd put him all these years would crumble away rapidly over the course of a couple of hours, due to the passing of time and the conceivable decline in musical character.

After queuing for beers for what felt like an eternity, my companion and I found a good spot and waited with trepidation for things to kick off. Eventually, and without any fanfare, a band gradually began to assemble onstage beginning a jam which morphed sneakily into a very slick and tight cover of Marvin Gaye's classic 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)'. This band were precisely the kind  you'd expect Stevie to have backing him these days. They had 'LA session dudes' written all over them but they demonstrated enough playfulness and swing to make it work.

Has there ever been a festival more rooted in positivity, unity and optimism for change than last weekend's Global Citizen Festival? The charitable event raised awareness about serious world issues and also saw soul legend Stevie Wonder headline the Saturday night. Organised by Australian philanthropist Hugh Evans, the event is designed to raise funds to support causes that lift people out of extreme poverty, work towards gender equality in education, and promote environmental sustainability.

Stevie Wonder Takes A Stand Against Florida Law After Trayvon Case

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder, the Grammy-winning musician and singer, has spoken out as being strongly opposed to Florida's laws regarding self-defence, whereby people are allowed to use deadly force if they believe their life is in danger, sparked by the controversial verdict that followed the George Zimmerman trial. As reported by Sky News, the 63 year-old blind performer addressed his audience during a recent concert in Quebec, announcing "Until the stand your ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again. Wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."

Stevie Wonder Lets His Voice Be Heard By Boycotting Florida And Other 'Stand Your Ground' State Shows

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder is, like many other Americans, extremely ticked off over the 'not guilty' decision given to George Zimmerman in the 2nd degree murder case against the unarmed, African American teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida earlier this month. Rather than take to the streets and react violently to the court verdict like so many others have, the Motown legend has taken a much more responsible approach and instead decided to boycott the state of Florida on any future tours of the United States in a sign of protest.

Stevie Wonder
Stevie is using peaceful protest to show his disappointment towards the Zimmerman case

During his performance at the Festival D'Ete De Quebec in the Canadian city of Quebec this Sunday (July 14), the legendary singer-songwriter chose to make a stand and pleaded with the audience to come together and do the same by showing a united front against the state of Florida and any other state that imposes the 'stand your ground' law that was in part responsible for Zimmerman's acquittal. He told the audience, in an announcement that was met with cheers from across the crowd; "I decided today that until the 'stand your ground' law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again. As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."

Stevie Wonder To Perform Over Super Bowl Weekend

Stevie Wonder Justin Timberlake Alicia Keys Beyonce Knowles Neil Patrick Harris

Musical genius, icon and all-round nice guy Stevie Wonder is going to make the Super Bowl weekend a whole lot more magical, as he will be performing in New Orleans next week for the much-anticipated Super Bowl extravaganza.

A spokesperson for the once a year event said today (Jan 25) that Bud Light will be sponsoring the concert, which will also feature performances by Texan blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. and more at an open-air venue near the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in NO. But wait, there's more!

If the prospect of having Alicia Keys perform the national anthem prior to kick off, Beyonce (and maybe even the rest of Destiny's Child) performing at halftime and Stevie all in the same city over the same weekend, the star-studded line-up doesn't end just there. Justin Timberlake is lined up to appear live for the first time in over four years during the 'DIRECTV Super Saturday Night' performance on the 2nd. The performance is an invitation-only concert being held directly after DIRECTV’s 'Celebrity Beach Bowl,' with singer/rapper Pitbull set to perform at that shindig too.

A Tribute To Dick Clark - Stevie Wonder Leads The Honours At The AMAs

Stevie Wonder Dick Clark Tony Orlando Buddy Holly James Brown

At Sunday night's (November 18) American Music Awards, Stevie Wonder paid tribute to the late Dick Clark, the former presenter of American Bandstand.

Clark passed away in April, aged 82 and Stevie said that he was “Truly honored to have been asked (to pay tribute to the TV star), because that spirit I knew and saw on television was his real spirit in real life. Meeting him as a person was wonderful.”

Wonder went on to play a three-song medley and said “He brought musicians, artists and songwriters of all the various genres together, and we perform in the spirit of music… It's a challenge to Americans and world leaders to do the same.” The singer Tony Orlando once said of Clark “Only God is responsible for making more stars than Dick Clark.” He was responsible for breaking a huge number of American artists through his TV show, such as Buddy Holly and James Brown.

Stevie Wonder Pays Homage To His Friend Dick Clark

Stevie Wonder Dick Clark Ryan Seacrest

Last night's American Music Awards saw the show's creator, the late Dick Clarke, honoured by Stevie Wonder, as the legendary musician paid tribute to his friend in song, and spoken word.

"Truly honored to have been asked, because that spirit I knew and saw on television was his real spirit in real life. Meeting him as a person was wonderful," said Wonder to Rolling Stone on the opportunity to perform. "He brought musicians, artists and songwriters of all the various genres together, and we perform in the spirit of music," he said. "It's a challenge to Americans and world leaders to do the same." Ryan Seacrest - who in recent years hosted New Year's Rockin' Eve with Clark - introduced Wonder, first offering up words of admiration for his late friend and peer. "I was in awe of [Clark's] star quality and how completely comfortable he was in front of the camera," Seacrest said. "Even when I got to know him well and count him and his wife Carrie as friends, I never lost that sense of awe." Seacrest said the American Music Awards was a fitting platform on which to honor Clark. "This show, on its 40th anniversary, still reflects Dick's original vision: bringing the top artists on the planet together on an equal stage," Seacrest said. "Dick loved the power of music and its ability to create pure joy. That's why we're going to use music tonight to celebrate the joy of his life."

Dick Clark died aged 82 on April 18, 2012, after suffering a heart attack following surgery to fix an enlarged prostate, a transurethral resection of the prostate.

Eddie Murphy was honoured by his peers for his outstanding contribution to film, TV, music and stand-up over his 30 + year career.

Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler, and Russell Brand were just some of the famous faces at the Beverley Hills gala being aired on Spike later this month (it airs Nov. 14 at 10 p.m. on Spike). Murphy's friends and co-stars had nothing but praise for Murphy, with his appearances on such comedy classics as Coming To America and The Beverley Hills Cop being recalled by co-stars Arsenio Hall and Judge Reinhold. Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks Animation also gave his heart to Murphy's Donkey character from the Shrek films, whilst his Life co-star, Martin Lawrence, told him from onstage, “You’ve got a friend for life."

There were also video highlights from the funny man's seminal stand-up performances from the 80's, Raw and Delirious, although despite much attempted persuasion Murphy declined to get back on stage and perform stand up again.

Michael Eavis Has His Sights On Rolling Stones To Headline Glastonbury 2013

Rolling Stones Michael Eavis Glastonbury Festival Radiohead Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Bruce Springsteen Stevie Wonder Arctic Monkeys

It looks like Glastonbury 2013 may already have its first big name already sorted, with festival organiser Michael Eavis admitting that he is on the verge of signing The Rolling Stones as the closing act for the five day festival in the Somerset countryside.

The festival currently has no confirmed headline acts, with the line-up not being announced until much closer to the event, which runs from Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 June, 2012. Still, this hasn’t deterred people from snapping up the tickets, with the whole festival selling out within minutes of the tickets becoming available on October 7. Whilst cancelled tickets will be made available for resale in April next year, it is more than likely that they will go just as fast.

A source close to Eavis has spoken to tabloid paper The Sun to reveal that the first headline act will potentially be the Stones, admitting that the festival head is “desperate” to sign up the veteran rockers. Should the band agree to perform at the festival, it will be the first time they have appeared at the historic meeting ground for music enthusiast and festival goers that has seen the likes of Radiohead, Beyonce, Jay Z, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and the Arctic Monkeys headline in the past.

Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson And Stevie Wonder Among The Stars At Barack Obama's Democrat Fundraising Concert

Katy Perry Jennifer Hudson Stevie Wonder Jon Bon Jovi George Clooney Wolfgang Puck

Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder were among the star names to perform at a fundraiser for President Barack Obama's democrats at a concert titled '30 Days To Victory.' With additional appearances by Earth, Wind And Fire as well as Jon Bon Jovi and George Clooney, Obama was pulling all the stops out to regain ground following his listless performance in the debate last week against his presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

However, Obama was more than willing to admit he didn't meet expectations during last week's discussion; taking to the Nokia Theater in California, the Prez joked "Everybody here is incredible professionals, they're such great friends and they just perform flawlessly night after night. I can't always say the same." Obama also pointed out that the road to the 2008 election wasn't easy either, saying, "everybody always remembers the victory, but they don't always remember the bumps in the road. Things always look good in retrospect. But in the middle of it we made all kinds of mistakes. We goofed up. I goofed up. But the American people carried us forward."

There were nearly 6,000 people in attendance for the concert, with tickets going at a cool $250 each. Obama also appeared at a private dinner for just 150 guests at celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's restaurant WP24; tickets for that were somewhat more expensive at $25,000 a pop.
