Is 'The Great British Bake Off' Really Too Smutty?

Sue Perkins Mary Berry

Despite being one of the most watched programmes on British television, The Great British Bake-Off is coming in for criticism for its apparent smuttiness. BBC complaints show Points of View featured a segment on the baking contest, featuring viewers unhappy with the regular innuendos made by hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.

The Great British Bake Off Kicks Off Season 4 With A Bang And No Lost Fingers (Yet)

Mary Berry Sue Perkins

The Great British Bake Off is back! This will really only be news to fans of the nicest, least offensive piece of reality telly out there, but surprisingly, there are quite a few of those fans out there. Folks at the BBC probably didn’t expect that the BBC2 competition where 13 (as of this season) contestants compete to see whose batter is the lightest and fluffiest and whose cake/bread/pasty is the fluffiest or crispiest, would become such a huge hit.

How Twitter Got Ben Elton's 'The Wright Way' Axed From BBC1

Ben Elton Brian May Sue Perkins

Ben Elton's new BBC1 sitcom 'The Wright Way' has been axed by the corporation after it received a critical mauling on Twitter. Executive Shane Allen confirmed on Tuesday (July 9, 2013) that the show - set in a local council's health and safety department - would not be returning for a second series.

In a strange observation from a top BBC executive, Allen warned that the instant reaction and "crucifying" of new comedies on Twitter made it more difficult for programmes to bed in. Though it's certainly right to allow new shows to develop, it's a little rich for the BBC to be axing shows and blaming social media.

Allen, the former boss of Channel 4 comedy, said he had spoken to Ben Elton about The Wright Way, with the pair coming making a decision "in conjunction." According to The Guardian, he said:  "Ben Elton was really bruised by the reception. He felt 'If people aren't loving this I am not going to put myself through it again'."Maybe 10, 15 years ago, you might have gone, 'what did people like about it, what are the characters that worked', but people are quite quick to judge and to crucify these days."

Time For A Female Dr. Who? We Think So! But Who Could It Be?

Helen Mirren Sue Perkins

The BBC, as a publically funded broadcaster, has to represent the changing attitudes of a nation. And this nation wants a female Dr. Who, so who could fill those time-travelling boots?

Well Helen Mirren would love to do it, and as a genuine British icon, she certainly would be a popular choice. “I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick,” she explained to The Daily Star a while back, in 2011. Sue Perkins – host of The Great British Bake Off and half of Mel and Sue – would be another popular choice. The news that Matt Smith – a great Dr. Who – was to leave the franchise was followed by a Twitter Campaign to get her the part. We think she’d be a good choice, too, but perhaps not as good as Tilda Swinton, who would bring a wealth of acting at the very top to the role. Considering she learnt to speak Italian in a Russian accent for her character in I Am Love, we’re pretty confident she to step to any challenges the role of The Dr would bring.

The Great British Bake Off Final: An All Male Affair!

Sue Perkins

The Great British Bake Off final kicked off tonight, and without giving you any spoilers for those that want to catch up on BBC iPlayer, we can safely tell you that the show has a male winner, because all the finalists were blokes!

Okay, maybe just that one spoiler for those who are really catching up. But what happened to the age-old stereotype, which states that women stay in the kitchen, huh? It’s gone: it has to be done and dusted now, as the arguably the most watched cooking competition is hosted by women, and competed solely by men as it enters its swansong. We at Contact Music are happy it’s gone; let the men bake and the women be captains of industry as we enter 2013. The Great British Bake off, presented by comedy duo, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, was mooted to draw in a gigantic 5m viewers, as we find out who the top baker is, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it trumped that estimation.

It’s not just viewers, either; manufacturers of baking products must be licking their sticky lips when Bake Off season comes round, with some products increasing 500% in sale. People are being in spurred on to create pastries and tasty breads. A lot of you will be tempted to join in, but be warned: it is a science, you cant just bung a load of stuff in a bowl and expect it to work, as we’re sure you’ll have noticed by some of the failings of the hopefuls on the show. Happy baking!
