‘Great British Bake Off’ presenter Sue Perkins has revealed she’s been living with a benign brain tumour for eight years. Speaking to Good Housekeeping magazine the host said that the tumour means she is unable to have children due to its affect on her reproductive hormones.

Sue Perkins‘GBBO’ host Sue Perkins has been living with a brain tumour for eight years.

“I’m lucky that it’s benign so it’s not in itself a worrying thing,” Perkins told the mag. “Sometimes it’s big and makes me mad, and sometimes it’s small and is in the background. Sometimes it screws up my hormones. I have various tests now to make sure the side effects aren’t too onerous.”

Perkins said that she found out about the tumour when she was filming BBC series ‘Supersizers’, which looked at diets from various time periods. “I found out when I had a check-up while filming 'The Supersizers', eight years ago,” the 45 year old said.

“I was at a point where I was spending so much of my life doing TV that I only found out about my real life through a television procedure. I didn’t have the time to go to the doctor in real life.”

“That’s what really made me think that the balance (in my life) was wrong,” Perkins added. But while the tumour is benign it does affect the body’s secretion of reproductive hormones, which means the presenter cannot have children.

“We live in a time and place where we think everything is possible," Perkins said. “I don’t know if I would have gone on to have children. But as soon as someone says you can’t have something, you want it more than anything.”

After she revealed her condition Perkins was inundated with messages of support on twitter. Thanking fans for their concern, Perkins tweeted, "Ta for sweet tweets about my prolactinoma. It's benign & non-symptomatic. All fine. Let's focus on those less fortunate in the world.”
