Super Bowl 2016 Commercials: Amy Schumer, Drake And Steve Harvey Keep Us Gripped Mid-Game

Super Bowl Amy Schumer Drake

Everyone knows the best thing about the Super Bowl is the commercials and this year, it doesn't disappoint. Featuring all the most unlikely stars you can imagine from Liam Neeson to Steve Harvey, this year's breaks had moments of tears, joy, shock and - namely - abject horror. Thanks Doritos!

Amy SchumerAmy Schumer hits the Bud with Seth Rogen

First you got Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen representing Bud Light in all their awkward glory, giving an uplifting power speech about America and the importance of beer. Then there's Liam Neeson goes all sci-fi on us with the LG ad (never has a commercial been so suspenseful), and Kia Optima's walk-in closet commercial (sorry, we mean the 'Walken' closet) - enter Christopher Walken, an advocate for brightly coloured socks. Go figure.

NFL Thinking About Inviting Bruno Mars To Play The Super Bowl 50 Half Time Show

Bruno Mars Mark Ronson Super Bowl

Following his spot on one of the biggest pop hits of all time in the last 12 months, R&B / pop star Bruno Mars has apparently been asked by the NFL to perform during the Super Bowl half-time show for the second time in his career, according to reports by multiple media outlets.

Since he last took on the prestigious honour in 2014, Bruno has featured on Mark Ronson’s ginormo-hit ‘Uptown Funk!’, which has been almost certainly the biggest hit of the decade so far and spent an incredible 14 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. Insiders familiar with the situation are indicating on Wednesday (September 9th) that this extraordinary success has persuaded the NFL to extend their invitation for a second time.

Katy Perry Fails In Trademark Application For "Left Shark" Design

Katy Perry Super Bowl

Pop star Katy Perry has failed in a bid to register a “Left Shark” design as a trademark, in an attempt to cash in on the internet phenomenon sparked by her Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year.

Back in February, one of the singer’s two back-up dancers dressed as a cute cartoon shark seemed to have forgotten his choreography, throwing some rather erratic moves compared to the other. The incident was dubbed “Left Shark” and was the most talked-about event of the evening on social media, eclipsing the game itself and spawning a ton of internet memes.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Bruno Mars Super Bowl

“Hang on a minute, their guitars aren’t plugged in to anything” an eagle-eyed Super Bowl viewer probably said somewhere in America. And he/she was right: while Anthony Kiedis sang alongside main performer Bruno Mars live, the others were just faking it.

Surprise, Surprise: Renee Fleming, A True Singer, Nails National Anthem At Super Bowl

Renee Fleming Super Bowl

Although Renee Fleming’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner last night may have been slightly overshadowed by Bruno Mars’ half-time show, the soprano singer managed to shine none the less. Fleming’s appointment to open the game was an obvious departure from the NFL’s recent tradition to give the job to a pop singer – Fleming is an opera soprano and one of the most respected classical singers in the US, so she was bound to deliver a show-stopping performance. Most importantly, she didn’t mess up the lyrics, which is a step up from… other performances in recent memory.

Renee Fleming, Super Bowl Press Conference
Fleming's appointment to sing the anthem was a breakthrough for classical singers into a whole new market.

Fleming delivered a more poppy Star-Spangled Banner than one might expect from an opera singer. Even though she certainly sang with the kind of skill and control that can only be achieved through classical training, the embellishments she added to parts of the song sounded closer to a more disciplined Mariah Carey, than a straight-up classical singer.

Super Bowl Half Time Well And Truly Rocked By Bruno Mars And RHCP

Super Bowl Bruno Mars Red Hot Chili Peppers

Besides a victory for the Seattle Seahawks – and a long overdue one at that – last night’s Super Bowl was also a triumph for Bruno Mars. Mars’ Half Time show with the Red Hot Chili Peppers was full of soul – no gimmicks, just good music. Well, maybe there was one gimmick. Time Magazine reports on the show. Mars’ performance kicked off with a song performed by a children’s choir, which, although it was cute, was undeniably only there for the cute factor. The song quickly segued into a drum solo by the multitalented Bruno himself, which was later taken over by his brother Eric Hernandez (Bruno Mars was originally born Peter Hernandez).

Bruno Mars, Super Bowl Press Conference
Mars refused to give away any details during his Super Bowl press conference last week.

Things got real as the golden jacket and skinny tie came out and Mars stretched out the good ol’ vocal chords with a performance of the eternal crowd pleaser Locked Out Of Heaven. His jumbo band of brass, backup singers and bass put the song across nicely. The synchronized dance to Treasure was just icing on the cake.
