Just How 'Expendable' Is Sylvester Stallone To Film Franchise?

Sylvester Stallone

The end of 'The Expendables' is very probably nigh, as Sylvester Stallone announces his sudden departure from the series. This is likely to have an extremely different if not devastating effect on the franchise as a whole, as he's been a key player in the films from the start.

He will now not be involved in 'The Expendables 4', marked for cinematic release in 2018. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham have both been confirmed for the next installment, but Sylvester will forfeit a paycheck of upwards of $20 million, according to Deadline, because of disagreements with producer Avi Lerner.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Super Bowl Trailer

It's been two months since the Guardians of the Galaxy defeated the evil Ronan, and their prize is freedom and a clean criminal record. Finally. These guys are truly inseparable now; Baby Groot's (Vin Diesel) rebirth has meant that he has a lot of growing up to do and is relying on Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to keep him on the straight and narrow (not that he's great with kids or anything), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) hasn't changed a bit and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who is still using the name Star Lord, has started to develop seriously cuddly feelings towards the feisty Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Their latest mission is to track down Quill's alien father, but they are not alone. Joining them on their new galactic journey is Gamora's changeable sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), Quill's (kind of) adoptive father Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker) and antennaed newcomer Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Sylvester Stallone Jack Whitehall

One of the most bizarre and unlikely celebrity feuds of the year has emerged, with Sylvester Stallone hitting out at British comedian Jack Whitehall and accusing him of “distorting lies” after he recounting meeting the 69 year old star at the Oscars in February.

Speaking to The Mirror earlier this week, the 27 year old presenter and funnyman joked that he had cheered up Stallone after he had failed to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor last month. Stallone had been hotly tipped to win, but lost out to Mark Rylance for his role in Bridge of Spies.

Creed Review

Extraordinary

While this film is basically Rocky VII, it's also much more than that, and perhaps the best in the series as it tells a standalone story with energy and skill. Reteaming writer-director Ryan Coogler with actor Michael B. Jordan after their underrated gem Fruitvale Station, this pulsing drama is also one of the best boxing movies in recent memory, harking back to classics in the genre while reinventing them with textured storytelling and raw performances.

Jordan plays Adonis, who never met his father, the iconic boxer Apollo Creed. He also refuses to take his surname, even after being adopted by Apollo's widow (Phylicia Rashad) and raised in a Los Angeles mansion with a great education. But he also can't resist the temptation to box, starting out in backroom Tijuana brawls. Finally he realises that something's got to give, so he heads to Philadelphia to explore his roots, meeting his father's former friend and rival Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and asking him to teach him a few tricks to help further his career. But Rocky is battling his own issues, so these two mismatched men push each other forward. Adonis finds romance with the feisty Bianca (Thompson), and Rocky decides to help Adonis train to face the tough British champ (Tony Bellew).

The essence of this story is that we have to make peace with the past to move on to the future. This is woven into the script beautifully, without ever preaching, as Coogler encourages the audience to constantly see what's happening beneath the surface. This requires the actors to deliver unusually complex performances, and Jordan is wonderfully conflicted as a man whose inner nice guy is warring against his own history. Stallone, meanwhile, delivers one of his best performances ever as the sardonic, battered champion. He's relaxed and open, reminding us why we fell in love with Rocky to begin with.

On Sunday night, when he scooped his first ever Golden Globe, the 69 year old actor thanked a handful of people, including his agent, his wife and kids and his “best friend” Rocky Balboa (who he said he still has “conversations” with every night). However, he left out director Coogler, and the lead actor Michael B. Jordan, whose character Stallone trains in the boxing movie.

Michael B. Jordan Really Did Get Knocked Out While Filming 'Creed'

Sylvester Stallone

Creed star Michael B. Jordan has been maintaining throughout all the promotional work he’s done for his new movie that he’s not actually a boxer, but an actor. However, he sure does look convincing as a real-life pugilist, particularly in a new video posted by co-star Sylvester Stallone.

Stallone, 69, released a short clip on Twitter of Jordan warming up in the ring with English professional cruiserweight boxer Tony Bellew, who promptly unleashed a right hook and knocked Jordan unconscious – for real! Talk about suffering for your art.

Filming took place in Liverpool at the start of 2015, with Bellew playing Jordan’s English opponent ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan.

Uneventful Box Office Maintains Summer Momentum

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone Wesley Snipes Jet Li Jeff Bridges

Not much to report from the box office after this week – despite all its manpower, Expendables 3 just couldn’t outgun previous chart toppers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy and ended up fourth in a line of new releases and return champions. The Turtles continued their reign with a respectable $28,4 million on their second outing according to Rentrak (via The Huffington Post).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Check out the guns on that turtle.

Guardians trailed only slightly behind with $24,7 million. In a slight disappointment for Marvel, the superhero space opera lost its lead in just the second week to the CGI-heavy TMNT flick. Even so, on its third week, GotG has reached an impressive cume of $222 million for distributor Walt Disney. Coupled with TMNT’s earnings this should enough to restore some faith in the 2014 summer box office from studios. For comparison, August so far marks a 14% increase in profits since last year, which of course concerns the average moviegoer roughly 0%.

Sylvester Stallone and his franchise for ageing action stars is back! Yes, the gang has nearly doubled for the latest Expendables adventure, stirring in big-named oldies along with fresh blood. The plot may not make any sense, and this one's been chopped down to a PG-13, but with a cast this beefy, you don't want to miss it.

Boneheaded 'Expendables 3' Isn't Fooling Anybody

Sylvester Stallone

We sort of got the point ofThe Expendables(2010). It was fun, nostalgic and silly. Most people enjoyed it - which Sylvester Stallone took as "please make another one". So, we gotThe Expendables 2. It was decent. Visually, it was probably better than the first - but let's get things clear, nobody - nobody - wanted The Expendables 3.

The Expendables 3The Expendables 3 cast

And yet here we are. Telling you that The Expendables 3 isn't very good. It stars Stallone and Jason Statham as Barney and Christmas - going head-to-head Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). Conrad founded the Expendables years ago but sadly became a ruthless arms trader who Barney must now apparently kill.

Sylvester Stallone

A huge proportion of those hitting the cinemas this weekend will be watching Sylvester Stallone shooting people's heads off in a bid to defeat the fearsome....uh..Mel Gibson. Though despite his on-screen persona as an all-action beefcake, Sylvester Stallone is actually one of the NRA's biggest enemies. In fact, Stallone is without doubt the biggest anti-gun star working in Hollywood.

Sylvester Stallone Lexi Alexander

Lexi Alexander, the director of Green Street Hooligans and Punisher, has been blogging about the recent pre-release leaking of The Expendables 3, and it makes for interesting reading. Lionsgate has been in meltdown for the past week or so after Sylvester Stallone's action-romp made its way online - in good quality.

The studio is going after pretty much everyone, including Google, over the leak, but shouldn't it be searching out the person who stole the footage in the first place? Alexander - who has previously campaigned for the release of Pirate Bay founder Peter Sunde - blogged, ".okay, you want to be mad at the kid in Sweden or Australia for uploading your movie? Go for it.  Oh wait, in cases like Expendables 3 it's actually someone here in Hollywood leaking it."

Film Franchises That Go On Forever

Martin Freeman Peter Jackson Ian McKellen Vin Diesel Sylvester Stallone Bruce Willis Harrison Ford Johnny Depp Mickey Rourke

The Hobbit trilogy has been criticised by some viewers for having too little content spread too thinly over the course of too many films. Originally, the idea was to split the 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien story over two films; however, in 2012, director Peter Jackson confirmed his plans for a third film; some six years after the two-film decision had been made.

Peter Jackson
Director of The Hobbit, Peter Jackson, originally thought the franchise would only spread across two films

Was this to enhance viewers’ experience of the story or was it because three films make more money than two? Audiences will never know. They will instead have to settle with a narrative with a lot less to say than The Lord of the Rings trilogy over the same number of motion pictures; with the final chapter in the piece, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, released in the UK on 12 December.

Cast Of "Expendables 3" Tanks At Cannes. Literally.

Sylvester Stallone Mel Gibson Jason Statham

Tanks at Cannes – if anyone could pull it off, it had to be Sly Stallone and company. Stallone and Expendables 3 costars made their arrival, riding along the Croisette in the French city in two massive Soviet tanks. Sure, it didn’t do anything to help the already terrible traffic in Cannes around festival time, but it did contribute to the film’s eye-popping promotional bill of $2 million, spent over the course of the festival.

Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone shows his support for the efforts to rescue over 200 girls kidnapped by militants in Nigeria.

Besides the tank stunt, admittedly one of the better ideas to come out of a Hollywood promo team, the $2 million budget also included a promo of clips from the movie and a star-studded press conference at the Carlton hotel. The press conference featured almost all the stars of the film (and the tank stunt) including returning heroes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolph Lundgren, as well as new recruits Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Kelsey Grammar. Nu Image and Millenium Films must be working on a very liberal budget this time around.

Should You See 'Grudge Match'? Rocky V Raging Bull? No, No You Shouldn't.

Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro

Why do Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone do this king of thing? They’re both revered as legends of cinema, to be remembered forever for their classic turns as Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, Rocky and Rambo respectively, so why do they both insist on doing truly awful films like Grudge Match?

Robert De Niro and Sylvester StalloneWhy, why, why Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone?

The short answer would involve the words, money, loads of it, and payday, but there’s a sneaking suspicion that these Hollywood stalwarts actually think the constant slew of unfunny, unimaginative reboot/reunion movies are a good idea – like they’ve got an ounce of artistic integrity attached to them. They don’t.

Stallone And De Niro Miss The Punch In 'Grudge Match' - Review Round-Up

Robert De Niro Sylvester Stallone Alan Arkin Kevin Hart Kim Basinger

Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are no strangers to putting on their boxing gloves for the sake of the movies and in their latest film, Grudge Match, the two screen icons are putting their respective ages aside to step into the ring once again. The film comes with a lot of promise, starring Alan Arkin, Kevin Hart and Kim Basinger alongside the two screen titans, yet sadly the overall response to the film from critics has been very underwhelming.

Grudge Match
Stallone, Arkin, Hart and De Niro miss the mark with their latest film

The film stars Stallone and De Niro as two retired boxers, both well past their best, who ended their career with a long-standing and unresolved feud some years earlier. After meeting each other for the first time in years in a chance encounter, their feud returns and boils into a confrontation that ends in a melee of sorts, one that almost instantly goes viral and reignites interest in the former fighters. Soon they are receiving offers to return to the ring and settle their feud once and for all, but they can only make it into the ring if they can actually regain their fitness in time for the big fight.

'Gravity' Still Orbiting Top Spot At The US Box Office For Third Week Running

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Tom Hanks Chloe Moretz Benedict Cumberbatch Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone

It's been three weeks since it was released to the American public, but the sci-fi thriller Gravity has stayed strong and continued to dominate the US box office. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring film has continued to be a popular choice among cinema goers, helped largely by its word-of-mouth success and continued success in 3D and IMAX cinemas.

Gravity
Even Sandra Bullock can't believe Gravity's success

In what was a relatively lackluster weekend at the movies, Gravity added to its already impressive domestic gross with another $31 million (estimate) coming in from audiences since Friday (18 Oct.). The space-set Oscar contender did face some competition for the top spot, but its nearest rivals - horror remake Carrie and fellow Oscar-contender Captain Phillips - failed to do enough, leaving Gravity sitting pretty at the top of the US film chart. The estimated $31 million brought in over the weekend bring the total domestic gross to a whooping $170.6 million, a huge amount for a film that was predicted to only do modestly before its release three weeks ago.

'Gravity' Leads At The Box Office Once Again After Lackluster Weekend

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Tom Hanks Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone Chloe Moretz

Gravity needs no introduction anymore. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring sci-fi thriller has been written about and praised highly non-stop since it was released three weeks ago and on the top of this massive audience and critical success, the film has held strong for it's third consecutive weekend at the top of the box office. This weekend, it's estimated gross reflected a disappointing three days for the movie business, but with approximately $31 million coming in from audiences since Friday (18 Oct.), that number has been enough to keep the Alfonso Cuaron-directed film at the top for another week.

Gravity
Gravity still soars above the competition

There was some competition for the film, namely from newcomer Carrie and fellow Oscar-contender Captain Phillips, which finished the week in second place for a second consecutive week. Despite the best efforts from it's nearest competitors, and still benefitting from the revenue it receives from 3D and IMAX tickets, Gravity is sitting pretty at the top of the film chart once again. With a reported gross of $170.6 million domestically in just three weeks, the film is already the 10th highest grossing film of the year in the home market, and there is a good chance that the film will go on to climb up a few more places in the year's top ten before it's cinematic run is over. Take into consideration the fact that it hasn't been released in international markets yet, then Gravity could become one of the top grossing films of the year.

'Gravity' Still Soars Above Competition And Earns It's Third Weekend Atop The Box Office

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Chloe Moretz Benedict Cumberbatch Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone

Gravity is still America's most popular film at the cinemas, as the Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring sci-fi disaster movie has held strong for it's third consecutive weekend at the top of the box office. Despite some strong competition from newcomer Carrie and some other new titles from the week, the 3D and IMAX phenomenon is still performing strongly and sitting pretty at the top of the film chart.

Gravity
Gravity is still top at the box office

Gravity's weekend gross reflected a disappointing three days for the movie business, with only $31 million coming in from cinema-goers since Friday. Still, this has proved to be enough to keep it's nearest competitor at bay and enjoy yet more success. Providing Carrie or Captain Phillips don't have an overwhelming and unprecedented night of success this evening (20 October), then Gravity will quite easily continue to dominate the US box office.

Harrison Ford

The big news this week was that Harrison Ford will join the Expendables for their third film adventure. Sylvester Stallone tweeted the announcement, then went on to mention that Bruce Willis won't be around this time, apparently because he asked for too much money. Stallone was also caught on camera poking fun at Arnold Schwarzenegger's "big ego". Before they re-team for the next Expendables movie, they're costarring in the prison-break thriller Escape Plan. Watch Sly talking about Arnie at Comic Con here.

The next big superhero blockbuster will be Thor: The Dark World, and we got a more detailed look at the film in a new trailer this week. Pretty much everyone is back, including Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie looks like a huge-scale action adventure with a sense of humour about it. It opens in October. Watch the trailer for Thor: The Dark World here.

Harrison Ford Joins 'Expendables 3,' As Sly Brands Willis 'Greedy And Lazy'

Sylvester Stallone Harrison Ford Bruce Willis

Three things of note regarding The Expendables 3: Harrison Ford has joined the cast, Bruce Willis has left the cast, and Sylvester Stallone really hates Bruce's work ethic.

The whole thing kicked off late on Tuesday (August 8, 2013) when Sylvester Stallone - who stars in and wrote the screenplay for the third movie - tweeted, "WILLIS OUT. HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!"

Sure, it was a pretty blunt casting announcement, though maybe Willis was busy with another of the Die Hard movies or something? NOPE.

It's Go Go Go For Rocky Spin-Off: 'Creed' - Time To Get Excited?

Sylvester Stallone

Fans of the Rocky franchise have approached news of a spin-off film with caution, as these things can usually lead to either anger or sadness, or usually both. But is it finally time to start getting excited?

The movie is beginning to take shape. First off, MGM have given it the green light; that means the money is there to be spent. Secondly, we have a plot skeleton: the movie will focus on the grandson of Rocky’s nemesis-cum-allay Apollo Creed, who was portrayed by Carl Weathers in the first four ‘Rocky’ films. Deadline had the scoop on all this.

Rocky Is Back For Another Round In Upcoming "Creed"

Sylvester Stallone Ryan Coogler

It seems that for the past seven years, the Rocky franchise has been down, but not out. Now its revival has been handed over to the more than capable team of director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan. The two are fresh off their enourmous success with Fruitvale Station, which was featured in the Sundance Film Festival and earned the duo the Grand Jury Prize, as well as the Audience Award. It may have been that same success, which earned the duo their current gig.

Sly will reprise his best role - again.

The team are reportedly in talks for a film, entitled Creed – that is, the story of Apolo Creed’s grandson, who wants to get into boxing. The younger Creed has no need to take on the challenge – his family is living comfortably on his grandfather’s earnings, but the young Creed is on a mission to prove himself and his talent. Aiding him on this mission is his coach, Rocky Balboa. That’s right, not only will Sly Stallone be returning to his most infamous role, but Rocky will be helping the grandson of his main opponent. How’s that for a plot twist?

Is 'The Counselor' Set For The Oscars? [Trailer]

Ridley Scott Brad Pitt Penelope Cruz Cameron Diaz Javier Bardem Michael Fassbender Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro

The trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming gritty thriller The Counselor dropped yesterday, after the initial teaser was circulated in cryptic Russian. With a November release date, there's certainly enough time to build up anticipation for the film, which is written by No Country For Old Men screenwriter, Cormac McCarthy.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender Filming A Scene From The Counselor

There may be added logic to the late-2013 release date however: to give itself the best chances for 2014 Oscars consideration. The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame, Prometheus) who plays a lawyer who gets involved in cocaine trafficking and ends up in over his head with the wrong people. According to First Showing, Fassbender teams up in business with a rich acquaintance, played by Bardem, as Pitt's shady criminal character comes out of the shadows as things take a turn for the worst. In an incredible cast, Fassbender's co-stars include Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.Despite their cinematic fame and success, neither Scott nor Pitt have ever won an Oscar before, with Pitt apparently resigning himself to never winning, having said: "I don't play the Oscars game." November release dates tend to be awards friendly, due to being late enough to not be forgotten amongst the year's other cinematic releases but not too late as to have not made enough of an impression.

Sylvester Stallone's Rocky The Musical To Make Broadway Debut

Sylvester Stallone

Rocky The Musical doesn’t sound like it should be a success, but it would appear that Sylvester Stallone has a pretty canny knack of getting the commercial best out of the long running franchise, and so it would appear true once again with news that the show will be gracing Broadway.

The production has already made its debut, having run in Hamburg over in Germany last year, but now it will be stepping up to arguably the biggest theatrical stage of them all with a run on Broadway. The show is expected to begin a stint at the Winter Garden Theatre from February next year, according to the BBC. The musical has been co-produced by Stallone himself, though he’s been aided by the slightly bizarre teaming of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, who both have production credits too. The Ukrainian heavyweight boxers hold all four major World heavyweight titles between and they were brought onto production largely to help train the actors in movement and positioning for their roles, in order to make the choreography as authentic as possible.

Of the Klitschko involvement Bill Taylor sad "This is not boxers doing a kick line," the managing director of co-producers Stage Entertainment USA adding. "It's stunning movement representing some of the sparring and the fighting. It's very, very cleverly created." The script has been written by Thomas Meehan, who can list the stage versions of The Producers and Hairspray to his credit.

Sylvester Stallone Announces Rocky The Musical's Broadway Debut

Sylvester Stallone

He’s pretty much exhausted the films, so where next can Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise go? To the stage of course! Rocky The Musical has already made its debut in Hamburg, Germany, opening there last year; however it’s going to be arriving on the biggest theater stage of all from February as it graces Broadway.

The show will take place at the Winter Garden Theatre, according to the BBC. It’s been co-produced by Stallone himself, though also with the slightly bizarre teaming of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko helping out on production credits too. In fairness to the Ukrainian heavyweight boxers (and holders of all four major World title belts between them) they were on hand largely to help train the actors in movement and positioning for their roles, in order to make the choreography as authentic as possible (which’ll instantly make it more authentic than any of the movies, which saw Stallone absorb so many head shots that by rights he should’ve gone the same way as Apollo Creed did in Rocky IV, long before even reaching the fourth film.)

Stallone Names Patrick Hughes As The Director For "The Expendables 3"

Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham Dolph Lundgren Wesley Snipes Jackie Chan

Australian director Patrick Hughes has been named by Sylvester Stallone to helm his newest writing endeavor, The Expendables 3. Nothing is official just yet though, as Hughes still has to win the approval of Millenium, the studio behind the Expendables franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hughes will be flying in shortly to meet with studio heads, but the director is pretty much a shoe in for the gig.

Hughes is a newbie in the director’s seat, with one feature film on his record – a critically acclaimed 2010 thriller, which starred Ryan Kwanten as a city police officer on a thrill ride of a first day in a small country town. So, while he might be lacking in experience, Hughes isn’t exactly a wild card and Stallone probably knows what to expect of his work. It will be interesting to see how he handles the fast-paced action genre, though. However, with a cast this packed with famous action men, The Expendables can probably be carried on acting alone.

A lot of the stars of the previous two films are expected to return for The Expendables 3, including Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren. Some rumored additions to the already star-studded cast include Wesley Snipes and Jackie Chan. Stallone is currently in the midst of penning the script, with shooting expected to commence sometime this summer.

Sylvester Stallone Is Back In Top Shape For Bullet To The Head

Sylvester Stallone Jason Momoa Sung Kang

Right on time to fit in with the trend of classic action men returning to the screen, Sylvester Stallone’s new film, Bullet to the Head, hit theatres this week.

It’s your typical serving of an action-packed, blood-soaked shoot-em-up, with (quite apropos) bullets flying towards everyone’s craniums, lots of fighting, lots of explosions, you know the drill. But apparently this one really packs a punch, not just literally. According to some reviews, this flick sees Stalone sharper and more on point than he has been in a his most recent offerings, and that includes both Expendables films. Despite starring opposite actors like Jason Momoa, who is more than three decades his junior, Stallone is certainly not letting up.

In the Warren Hill directed comic book adaptation, Stallone plays lone Louisiana hitman Jimmy Bobo, who forms an unlikely alliance with idealistic cop Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang, Fast Five) to hunt down some shady characters who double-crossed him. Sounds unlikely, unrealistic and frankly, just plain fun, plus, even after supporting the ban on assault rifles, Sly has to get his kicks somewhere right?

Arnold Schwarzenegger Backs Tarantino On Movie Gun Violence, "It's Entertainment"

Arnold Schwarzenegger Quentin Tarantino Sylvester Stallone

Arnold Schwarzenegger has weighed into the raging debate about gun violence in movies and its parallels with real-life. Last week, Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino exploded at a UK journalist who brought up the much discussed subject, and Schwarzenegger holds similar views to the controversial director - effectively, that movie violence is fun.

The 65-year-old former governor of California - who has made a career out of shooting bad guys - said, "I personally feel that this is entertainment. The other thing is a serious real life tragedy. I think that we are going to continue doing entertainment. That is what we are doing as our profession, but at the same time, we all have a responsibility, I think, to improve the situation that we are in." Schwarzenegger returns to the screen this weekend in The Last Stand, an action movie in which he plays the sheriff of an Arizona border town tasked with stopping a Mexican cartel boss from returning to Mexico. The Terminator star noted that it's important not to stigmatize mental illness following gun tragedies like the one in Newtown, Connecticut, and cited parenting, education, security and gun laws as contributing factors to helping tackle gun crime. "We as a society have the responsibility to look at this and leave no stone unturned," he said.

The Last Stand is Schwarzenneger's first major role since leaving office, though he had a smaller part in The Expendables 2, which he says helped him prepare for his latest film. Later this year, he'll star opposite Sylvester Stallone in The Tomb. "I feel I have a bigger range, acting-wise," said Schwarzenegger. "It could be because of the age. It could be because of my experience that I have had now as governor."

Bullet To The Head - Trailer Trailer

Jimmy Bobo is a brutal hitman; the best of his kind, an expert in the convenient disposal of unwanted individuals. When his partner is killed in a ruthless attack by the formidable ex-mercenary Keegan, he vows to take him out but things get serious when he is approached by WDCPD detective Taylor Kwon who seeks his help to investigate the killer who has also murdered his colleague. Although reluctant and apprehensive at first, Jimmy accepts to work with him especially after his tattoo fanatic daughter Lisa is kidnapped by the enemy to lure him into the hands of Keegan who, not content with slaughtering Jimmy's partner, wants to kill him too.

This action thriller is based on the French graphic novel 'Du Plomb Dans La Tete' (which translates to the movie's title) by Alexis Nolent. Out of their usual main areas of filmmaking expertise, the movie has been directed by Walter Hill (producer of the 'Alien' film series and 'Prometheus') who co-wrote the screenplay with Alessandro Camon (co-producer of 'American Psycho' and executive producer of 'Bad Lieutenant'). 'Bullet To The Head' is sufficiently action packed, with a grand portion of humour thrown in there as Sylvester Stallone drops in the characteristic one-liners. It is set to be released on February 1st 2013.

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, Sarah Shahi, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Sung Kang, Jon Seda, Brian Van Holt, Holt McCallany, Weronika Rosati

The Expendables 2 Review

Good
Although there's been no attempt to tone down the first film's bloodthirsty hyperviolence or dim-witted plotting, this sequel is a massive improvement simply because they have fun with the premise. As a result, so do we.

Barney (Stallone) and his team of ageing mercenaries are coerced by Church (Willis) into heading into hostile territory to retrieve a top secret electronic gadget. Most shocking is the fact that Church insists that a woman, Maggie (Yu), joins them. And when things go wrong, Barney leads the gang on a grisly revenge mission against a nasty villain (Van Damme) who's callously putting humanity in peril. Along the way they're joined by Church and Trench (Schwarzenegger), and get help from lone-wolf Booker (Norris).

The Expendables 2 Trailer

Mr Church reunites the Expendables: Barney Ross; Lee Christmas; Yin Yang; Gunnar Jensen; Toll Road and Hale Caesar for a simple job. They are joined by two newcomers: Billy the Kid and Maggie. All in all, it looks like an easy paycheck for the Expendables. But things aren't always what they appear to be and when one of their own is brutally killed, the men set out to get revenge.

The Expendables are a group of highly trained mercenaries who are past their prime. In their last adventure, they get together for a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator in Vilena, an island in between the Gulf of Mexico and South America.

Chinese actress Yu Nan joins the cast as the first female Expendable, while Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger expand their cameos as Mr Church and Trent Mauser, respectively. The Expendables 2 is directed by Simon West (Con Air; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and was written by Sylvester Stallone, who directed the first film, which was released in 2010. Upon its release, The Expendables was a box office hit, grossing $266,159,621 worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal.

Directed by: Simon West

In US cinemas from August 17, 2012

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Liam Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Yu Nan, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Novak Djokovic and Randy Couture

Get Carter (2000) Review

Weak
Forget Get Carter. Instead... get me a cup of coffee.

What the hell has happened to all good American action movies? Did I unknowingly miss a meeting somewhere? When did all of the bad-ass, kicking butt and taking names, gun-toting, crazed, vengeful characters of the 1980s -- from such films as Commando, Cobra, Predator, Raw Deal, First Blood -- suddenly turn into innocent, compassionate, sensitive, teary-eyed knuckleheads. The only place to turn these days for an honest action film is towards the East -- and I don't mean New York City.

Assassins Review

Very Good
Okay, I admit it. I was expecting something horrible like Judge Dredd when I sat down for Assassins. Instead, imagine my surprise to find a nicely-crafted action thriller that does not feature Sylvester Stallone making a bunch of "witty" remarks.

Assassins is essentially an updating of a well-established story line. Robert Rath (Stallone) is the best in the world at what he does--killing people for money. But he's getting tired of it all and wants out of the business. Unfortunately, you can't just give two weeks notice to your faceless hit contractor; it's a bit more difficult than that. So it's understandable that Rath barely flinches when he finds out Miguel Bain (Antonio Banderas), the #2 assassin, is after him.

Spy Kids 3d: Game Over Review

Weak

Since the vast majority of the audience for "Spy Kid 3D: Game Over" has probably never seen a 3D movie with cheap, old-fashioned blue-and-red-lensed cardboard glasses, here's a three-point primer for proper enjoyment of any flick in this format:

1) Sit toward the middle of the theater. Because of the twin-image nature of 3D projection, the more off-center you are from the screen, the more you'll see eye-straining "ghosting" of images through your glasses instead of proper depth of field.

2) The left lens (red) always seems uncomfortably darker than the right (blue). Get used to it.

Get Carter Review

OK

If the rain-slicked new Sylvester Stallone revenge fantasy flick "Get Carter" seems a little familiar, it's with good reason.

It could be that the picture is a remake of a gnarly 1971 film of the same name (starring Michael Caine, who appears in this one too).

It could be that the bad-guy-going-after-worse-guys plot -- about a Las Vegas mob enforcer determined to find and snuff the people who whacked his estranged brother -- isn't all that different from the story of a hard-as-nails parolee avenging his daughter in last year's "The Limey."
