They became two of the biggest pop stars in the world during 2012, so it was only fitting that Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen were on hand to bring the curtain down on 2012 at the famous New Year's Rockin' Eve televised event in New York's Times Square. Perhaps the real success of the night however was the ABC's host Ryan Seacrest who - with help from Jenny McCarthy - did the late great Dick Clark proud in hosting proceedings in the first Rockin' Eve to be held since the veteran's death last year.
'Call Me Maybe' singer Carly Rae Jepsen brought down the curtain on a personally successful year
Dick Clark had hosted the televised event for 40 years, since first appearing at 1972's bash when it was on the NBC network. Clark suffered a stroke in 2005, at which point Seacrest was brought in as a co-host the next year; however, though Clark sadly passed away last year, the show still retained his name in the title, ABC calling the show 'Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest'.

If Clark is something of an institution, then the tradition of the iconic Times Square ball dropping down the 77-foot pole atop One Times Square is even older, the moment becoming an illustrious event from as early 1907. Taylor Swift was among those celebrating; she had good reason to as well, after becoming the biggest selling artist in the US for 2012. Performing on the night, she also made headlines off stage as well as she was caught smooching her rumored boyfriend Harry Styles of One Direction. The pair's relationship status has been the cause of much scrutiny in the past month, but their kiss - which took place at midnight no less - seems to have cleared up a lot of confusion.
Anderson Cooper enjoys the New Year's Eve revelry
It's no surprise that New Year's Rockin' Eve took the final TV ratings battle of the year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show took in a mighty 10.7 million viewers, its largest haul since 2000. Taking a rating of 3.1 in the 18-49 adults demographic, it was easily enough to beat out New Year's Eve With Carson Daly, which took a 1.1 over on NBC.
Jenni Farley and Nicole Polizzi were among the stars who came out for New Year's Rockin' Eve.
