Contactmusic teamed up with Festival Fever this summer to chat with Californian alternative folk singer Thao Nguyen from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down as the band get into the festival spirit following the release of their fantastic fifth album 'We The Common'.
Thao has been playing guitar since the tender age of twelve and, after putting her band together between her studies at college, has since received an ever-increasing shower of praise grabbing attention from their unique live shows as well as recorded material. Now on the road touring the festival circuit across the US and Europe, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down are making their mark as an up-and-coming and truly original talent. We caught up with them to discuss touring, hip hop and working with producer John Congleton.
'It's a sort of half excitement half dread because I've done it a lot', she said, pondering her feelings about setting out on tour. 'I think that I've matured in the sense that I know what my job is and I know how lucky I am to have it so I'll do what I need to do to keep it.'Keeping her job won't be a problem as long as she sticks with brilliant producers like John Congleton. 'A few things that I loved about Congleton was the diversity of his projects and his sense of song and the trajectory of a song and how respectful he is of the songwriting', she explained, though admitted it wasn't easy trying to schedule work together.
As well as the expected folk and rock influences scattered plainly throughout 'We The Common', Thao insists one of her main inspirations was listening to hip hop. 'I listen to more hip hop records when I'm making my records than anything else', she reveals. But proof is all in the listening and her album is available now on Ribbon Music.
