Simplicity, on the video for 'Hanging Johnny' by Sunderland rockers The Futureheads simplicity is defined as effortless as you'd want. Filmed in black and white and void of any instruments, the group flaunt their new a cappella style with the first single and video from their all a cappella album Rant. Director Ian West reflects on the band's attitude toward Rant seamlessly - they are four voices coming together in modern times, showing their appreciation for a near-forgotten musical tradition and putting their own mark on things.
Performing the somewhat macabre sea shanty song, which appears as a bonus track on the album, the band put on a great performance for the camera in this short but sweet clip. The only comparable group floating in my mind is Ted's a cappella group from the hospital sitcom Scrubs. This isn't so much a derogatory comparison however as they are quiet analogous; they both have a keen and loyal fan base and they both include a lot of humour in their shows. The humour used by the 'Hounds Of Love' singers has become tantamount with their live shows, with fans going to see them not just expecting tight harmonies and acoustic guitars but an impromptu comedy gala as well. Having already performed across the globe and numerous times up and down the country, they are set to return to the touring circuit this month.
