Nine Inch Nails Announce New Album, Plus Tour With The Jesus & Mary Chain

Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor The Jesus And Mary Chain

Alternative rock icons Nine Inch Nails have announced a brand new studio album and a North American tour with The Jesus & Mary Chain for later this year.

The long-running group, fronted by Trent Reznor, revealed on Thursday that their ninth studio album will released on June 22nd and will be titled Bad Witch.

The six-track record, though it apparently constitutes an actual album, will also complete a self-styled trilogy of EPs from Nine Inch Nails that started with 2016’s Not The Actual Events and last year’s Add Violence. Their last full studio album was 2013's Hesitation Marks.

La Route Du Rock 2017 At Saint-Malo, France - Live Review

The European festival season has just ground depressingly to a halt to make way for a few months of Netflix and chilly. That means it's time to look back longingly at the photos from those four days of music and sunshine you'll use to define 2017 in any social media end-of-year round-up.

La Route Du Rock 2017 At Saint-Malo, France - Live Review

If you were at La Route Du Rock in St Malo, you've already won the shallow one-upmanship battle, because there's no finer combination of seaside bliss, historic charm, epic scenery and perfectly curated festival lineup in your friends' feeds.

But this festival isn't simply style over substance. With a year-round role booking French tours for international artists, the team behind La Route du Rock are in a prime position to book one of the most eclectic and solid live bills of them all - this year as ever.

The Jesus And Mary Chain - De La Warr Pavillion, Bexhill-On-Sea 06.04.17

From East Kilbride to East Sussex, from The Barrowland's Ballroom last week to Bexhill-On-Sea this, The Jesus And Mary Chain's biggest tour for decades played out its penultimate UK gig (until September) in the resplendence of The De La Warr Pavilion. Hot on the back of their seventh studio album release, 'Damage And Joy', and their recent BBC6Music Festival appearance The Jesus And Mary Chain played to an appreciative, sold out, crowd.

The Jesus And Mary Chain - De La Warr Pavillion, Bexhill-On-Sea 06.04.17

With their first new album out in twenty years, a bunch of well received live dates behind them in recent years and a cooling off of sibling fractiousness The Jesus And Mary Chain took to the stage of this Modernist master piece. The band book ended the gig with songs from 'Damage And Joy' and filled the space in between with a set list that rang out like a greatest hits call to arms.

The opening track of their latest album unleashed the band on the expectant audience. With a joyously devilish squall and a tectonic bass, 'Amputation', the first single lifted off the album, kicked in. The noise was immense and the experience of witnessing the Mary Chain at full tilt again was nothing short of incredible. They followed on by stepping back some thirty years to 1987 with Jim and William's highest charting single, 'April Skies'. With a trademark vocal nonchalance and sensational, ground breaking, guitar the brothers Reid set the gig up as if they'd never been away. Pixies favourite, 'Head On', 'Far Gone And Out' and 'Blues From A Gun' followed before the band returned to their new material.

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Damage And Joy Album Review

I think for me The Jesus And Mary Chain have always been more than just their songs. In many ways, although revered and critically acclaimed in many circles, they have had more of an influence and been more of an inspiration than most give them credit for. When they initially broke through their sound, such a magnificent mixture of feral guitar and retro harmonies, was unleashed on a largely unsuspecting public to great effect. They may have had their own influences to help them arrive at the sound they did but they were real pioneers and truly unique at the time.

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Damage And Joy Album Review

Just like the band's cited influences that went before them, especially The Velvet Underground, The Jesus And Mary Chain have helped shape the musical landscape for a generation. It is not unjustified to say that the early work of the Mary Chain was both seminal and ground breaking. 'Psychocandy' is a work of genius and certainly one of the greatest debut albums of all time. What Jim and William Reid and Bobby Gillespie brought was raw, unfettered, wild and extremely passionate. They were utterly alone in their sound at the time (A time when Jennifer Rush topped the charts with 'The Power Of Love) and utterly convincing in their belief and performance.

Thirty plus years on from that initial excitement, and some nineteen years since their last studio album, there is still a genuine buzz and animated expectation around both the band and the new album. 'Damage And Joy', the Mary Chains latest album is a full fourteen tracks and fifty three minutes long; twice as long as many of their early gigs! It's true that some of the songs are not entirely new, but, it is nonetheless a real joy to see them return, evidently buoyed by their live performances since their reunion.
