Review of Black Balloon EP by The Kills

Review of The Kills EP Black Balloon released through Domino Records on 23/02/09.

The Kills Black Balloon EP

Black Balloon is the lead song on this new EP from The Kills, which is released to coincide with their huge upcoming US and Canada tour. The track is taken from their critically acclaimed third album, Midnight Boom which was released last year.

The track is a step away from the distinctive frantic, thumping beats that we have come to expect from The Kills after Midnight Boom. This is The Kills stripped down, a tender, yet dark acoustic masterpiece. Mosshart's low, hypnotising vocals dominate the track throughout.

Then as Crazy opens, those vocals stop you in your tracks, strong but heart- rending, this is one of the best versions of this song I've heard. Kissy Kissy and Sour Cherry then bring you back to the bluesy punk sound that has served them so well and round off the EP perfectly.

This EP is here to remind us that no matter which path they take, The Kills will never disappoint.

Rating: 10/10
