The Mexicolas X Album

Having first caught the attention at the head of 2007, this Birmingham trio now release their debut album on indie label In Exile. Currently on tour across the UK, they've received support from various alternative radio stations and have a spot at the upcoming Give It A Name event.

Beginning in low melodic tones, 'Come Clean' unravels as a grungy and dynamic alt-rock track that acts as a nice introduction to Jamie Evans' rough vocals, which are again put to good use on 'Evil'. Wasting no time to grab the attention with its rolling guitars, it is an indication that this is a band that can put together a cracking tune, which is certainly what the awesome 'Shame' turns out to be. Dealing with the unique fan culture of the country, 'Big In Japan' stomps along gleefully, while 'Falling Into Myself' completes a very impressive first half of 'X'.

Whilst the power-ballad may derive great criticism, there is no doubt when done correctly they can turn out to be the stand-out moment of a record or gig. 'Times Infinity' is a stirring attempt that shows off a decent vocal range from Evans and also features some soaring guitars, it is let down only by some questionable lyrics. Back to the balls-out rock and 'We All Fall Down' begins as if it could have been on Velvet Revolver's 'Libertad' record, while 'Lovers Are Not Enemies' trades a calm intro for a huge chorus. In a music climate that is stale with uninspiring indie bands, there are groups under the radar who have attitude and excite, even if they don't make the generic lists of 'The Next Big Thing'. Though perhaps a little rough around the edges, Mexicolas are worth more attention than many of the flavour of the month acts.
