The Riptide Movement - Getting Through Album Review

A chart-topper in their native Ireland last year, 'Getting Through' is the third album from this quartet and The Riptide Movement are now receiving a global push.  They've previously supported The Rolling Stones and played Glastonbury to raise their profile, while this year's festival schedule includes slots at T In The Park and the Reading and Leeds events.

The Riptide Movement - Getting Through Album Review

If you have a quick glance at the biography on The Riptide Movement's website, you'll find the band pushed as Eire's answer to The Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner.  Their sound can be described as rock leaning toward country, while frontman Mal Tuohy has the very slightest bit of Bono about his voice.  What it fronts is a series of mid-tempo cuts which very quickly blend into one another, failing to achieve the rousing spirit that is wanted by 'Animals' or 'You And I'.  Songs such as 'Skin And Bone' and 'Friday To Sunday' have accessible choruses, but they are lyrically simple to the point that they border on being outright boring.  The lack of variation in sound, tempo and dynamic ultimately make 'Getting Through' a task with scant reward, and with no evidence of anything remotely inspiring.

Kicking off proceedings, Mariachi el Bronx will be bringing a little Mexican spirit to the UK festival - which will be just as well if the English weather lets us down come August. They'll be joining headliners Metallica, Mumford & Sons and The Libertines, plus many more top billing artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Alt J and Bring Me The Horizon.

The Riptide Movement - Oporto - 12:00
Getting the day off to a low key start is The Riptide Movement at the small but very quaint Oporto bar. The only problem here is that a set from these Dubliners is bound to leave you singing along for the rest of the day ('All Works Out', for example), but it will at least get you geared up for their upcoming debut album 'Getting Through' released on June 1st, which has already been critically acclaimed in Ireland.

The Riptide Movement - All Works Out

The Riptide Movement unveil their debut UK single 'All Works Out' complete with an amusing new video. The single is set to be released on March 9th 2015 through Caroline International and Universal Records.

The video sees a woman being unwillingly sectioned for her hallucinations; she keeps seeing a band pop up everywhere performing the same old song but no-one else can hear it. Undergoing group therapy and being forced pills, she teaches the song to her fellow patients and is subsequently locked up for it. Eventually she stops seeing the band and, sad as it has made her, she checks out of the hospital apparently cured. The song in question is rather an appropriate one for the subject matter of the video, with positive lyrics, strong vocals and a driving rhythm that's ridiculously catchy.

The Riptide Movement are set to release their album 'Getting Through' in the UK soon, after it became a number one, Gold certiftied success in their homeland of Ireland. The album even reached the shortlist for the Meteor Choice Music Prize for  Irish Album of the Year, and it's certainly no wonder their three night residency at The Islington, London in February is now totally sold out.
