The Who rocker Pete Townshend credits band Roger Daltrey with saving his career when he was being investigated on child pornography charges three years ago (JAN03). The veteran musician was so shocked by the investigation, he refused to speak out about his innocence - so Daltrey spoke out on his behalf. And Townshend insists he couldn't have got through such a difficult time without Daltrey's support and faith. He says, "I suppose it's true to say that it could have had a much worse effect had Roger not been so profoundly and powerfully behind me. My lawyers and I decided that I shouldn't speak. "So Roger spoke for me, and he was such a powerful voice. I remember Bill Nighy saying to me, 'F***ing hell, everyone could use a friend like that.' "Because the fact is that Roger didn't know what was going to happen."
