Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Review

Very Good

There's so much manic energy in this animated action comedy that it can't help but entertain pretty much everyone in the audience, from kids who like fart jokes to adults who will enjoy the surprisingly sweet exploration of childhood friendship. Indeed, the central thrust of the film is resonant with meaning, which nicely grounds the outrageously colourful silliness.

The buddies at the centre are George and Harold (voiced by Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch), pranksters who keep the other students at their school doubled up in laughter. But of course this also makes them the primary nemeses of Principal Krupp (Ed Helms) and the class tattletale Melvin (Jordan Peele). In desperation, Krupp declares that he is moving George and Harold into separate classes. And in a moment of panic, the boys somehow manage to hypnotise Krupp into believing that he's Captain Underpants, the nutty superhero from the comics they draw in their treehouse. But as they're enjoying their power over the principal, a more threatening villain appears in the form of their humour-hating new science teacher, Professor P (Nick Kroll).

While the movie is a little too manic for its own good, there's plenty to enjoy here. Not only does the story work on a variety of levels, but it's animated in a range of visual styles, from the somewhat plasticky main story to more intriguing traditional animation, flip-books, pen and ink, comic strips and even sock puppets. Every scene is packed with unexpected twists and visual invention. Nothing about this movie sits still for long, bouncing through its wacky story without pausing for breath. And the knowing style of humour makes even the most vulgar humour disarmingly hilarious.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Teaser Trailer

There has never been a team quite like fourth-grade schoolkids George Beard and Harold Hutchins. When they are not wreaking havoc at their school with a variety of impressive pranks, they are writing and illustrating their very own comic book series based on their character Captain Underpants. Their fun is threatened, however, by their mean principal Mr. Krupp who wants to split up the 9-year-old besties for good to prevent any more mischievous antics. Determined not to be separated, they decide to hypnotize the teacher into being convinced that he is the real Captain Underpants. As hilarious as that may sound, the kids have a hard time looking after him as he gets into all sorts of trouble trying to save people. Then when a crazy scientist known as Professor Poopypants threatens to take over the world, the three of them must band together to defeat him.

Bad

You know you're in trouble when a madcap comedy is unable to even raise a smile. And it's worse when it strains to include a sentimentally emotional subplot without grounding anything in believable characters or situations. All that's left is a lot of corny toilet humour and eye-rollingly limp schmaltz. Even a decent cast can't rescue this one.

It all happens on one Halloween night in Ohio, when brainy 18-year-old Wren (Justice) and her oversexed pal April (Levy) plan to attend the party of the year hosted by the school hottie. But Wren's mother (Handler) runs off to her own party, leaving Wren in charge of her mischievous 8-year-old brother Albert (Nicoll), who hasn't spoken a word since their father died a year earlier. And Albert quickly ditches Wren, running off for an adventure with a lovelorn convenience store employee (Middleditch). To find him, Wren gets help from the nerdy Roosevelt (Mann), who has a crush on her.

The premise has potential, blending Adventures in Babysitting and Home Alone along with a bit of emotional subtext. But the screenwriters never make anything of it, instead indulging in startlingly unfunny slapstick, jokes about paedophilia and a sappy streak of half-baked sentiment. All of which means that the filmmakers waste their solid cast at every turn. Justice and Levy make an enjoyable if unlikely duo, while Nicholl is full of unpredictable energy. But the filmmakers manage to subdue the usually irrepressible Handler in a badly underdeveloped role that's still the most interesting thing in the film.

Rainn Wilson's The Office Spinoff 'The Farm' Cancelled

Rainn Wilson Majandra Delfino Thomas Middleditch

As the end of The Office is nigh, it was expected that various spinoff shows would be tried and tested. The idea that got farthest is The Farm which even had a pilot made. The Farm would have followed Rainn Wilson's character Dwight Schrute, who was the American equivalent of Gareth from the UK version of the comedy, with a setting of a bed and breakfast run by Schrute.

Despite the filming of the pilot, Wilson has now confirmed via Twitter that the show will not be taken any further. "Farm Update: NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show. Had a blast making the pilot - onwards & upwards!" He said, adding "PS Keep watching the AWESOME final season of The Office. Many surprises & hilariousities coming!" NBC have not yet confirmed this cancellation, but there's no reason an actor would downplay his own comedy series. Luckily, fans will still get to see the pilot as it is reportedly set to be aired alongside the current and final season of The Office. It was also going to star Majandra Delfino who played Dwight's sister Frannie, and Thomas Middleditch who was playing his brother.

Other shows that have been cancelled include Anderson Live! But many more shows have been re-contracted including Elementary, Vegas, Homeland, X-Factor and Arrow.
