Southside With You captures the moment that Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Obama formerly Robinson (Tika Sumpter) shared their first date and kiss in 1989. The film follows the story of Barack, a young law associate, who's on a mission to woo and win the heart of Michelle (who worked as a lawyer for the same company.) The story sees them travelling from the Art Institute of Chicago to watching a screening of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and finally ending up at the sight of their first kiss, outside an ice cream parlour.
This film is one of not just love but also finding your soul mate that one person in the world that brings out the best in you which is exactly what is evident in the relationship between Barack and Michelle, according to director Richard Tanne. The film is representative of one whole day and follows the journey of the couple falling in love.
