Filmmaker Tim Burton's magical new film has left the North American box office spellbound after raking in $28.5 million (GBP21.9 million) in its opening weekend.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, based on the popular young-adult book by Ransom Riggs, has beaten Mark Wahlberg's new disaster movie Deepwater Horizon to the top spot.
The film, starring Eva Green as the headmistress at an orphanage full of misfits with odd talents, was a big hit among critics and it appears fans are also impressed with Burton's latest film.
The quirky new film also features Samuel L. Jackson, Dame Judi Dench, and Hugo star Asa Butterfield, who recently heaped praise on his eccentric director.
"It's very surreal and gothic and odd," the young star says of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, "which I think Tim is best at capturing, compared to any other director."
The film rules the global box office, raking in $65 million (GBP50 million) overseas.
Real-life oil rig thriller Deepwater Horizon, starring Wahlberg and Kate Hudson, lands in second place in North America with $20.6 million (GBP15.9 million), while director Antoine Fuqua's Magnificent Seven remake, starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt, slips to three in its second week on release.
Animated family film Storks, featuring the voice talents of Jennifer Aniston, Kelsey Grammer and Andy Samberg, and Clint Eastwood's real-life drama Sully, starring Tom Hanks as hero pilot Chesley Sullenberger, round out the new top five.
Meanwhile, critically panned comedy Masterminds, featuring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, and Kristen Wiig, fails to make the top five, debuting at six with a lowly $6.6 million (GBP5 million).
Final weekend box office figures are expected on Monday (03Oct16).
