British songwriter Sir Tim Rice will be honoured with the Bmi Icon Award next month (Oct14).

The lyricist, best known for his theatre productions with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, has been chosen to receive the prestigious prize from Broadcast Music International (Bmi) bosses for his achievements in songwriting at the annual Bmi London Awards.

Bmi president Michael O'Neill says, "Sir Tim Rice's extraordinary creativity has given the world some of the most beloved songs... He is one of our era's most admired and respected lyricists, a leading author and sought-after commentator."

Previous recipients include Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry and Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon.

The ceremony will take place on 13 October (14) at London's Dorchester Hotel.
