NPH's opening speech definitely held a few surprises, but not from whom you'd expect.
The Emmys came and went and brought with them a plethora of funny, embarrassing and just plain meh moments. Neil Patrick Harris’ opening speech never fails to win a few laughs, as it did again this time, but it was really the golden duo – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – who stole the show. About five minutes into Harris’ speech, Poehler and Fey, clearly inspired by recent events at the VMAs began hollering at the host. But of course, the bit – hilarious in our humble opinion - didn’t come without some proper build-up.
Though the stage was populated by men, it was the ladies who mostly dominated the opening bit.
Two things became clear during Harris’ showdown with a flock of past Emmy presenters – Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and of course, the omniscient Conan O’Brian. Number one: in 2013 more than ever, broadcast television has some major competition in the media landscape and two: everyone is perfectly aware. While the presenters battled it out on stage, in the audience, Kevin Spacey turned to the camera for his own nefarious monologue.
As expected, 30 Rock bowed out with its much deserved Emmy.
Apparently it was all a plan, to bring about the “good ol’ days”. And the best was yet to come – in the face of Poehler and Fey. With cheers like “Take your pants off!” and Poehler’s priceless “It might be degrading, but we would be de-grateful,” the two managed to make NPH blush. Well, in truth, it was probably his makeup artist’s doing, but still – we can appreciate some good comedic pacing when we see it. You can watch the opening monologue in full below.
