Oprah Receives Apology From Swiss Tourism Office, Racism Debate Continues

Oprah Winfrey Tina Turner

Earlier this week, Oprah caused some uproar with her story of an incident of racism she encountered at a high end store in Switzerland. The media magnate recounted on several shows how she went into the Trois Pommes store, looking for a present for Tina Turner’s birthday. Oprah recounted the incident for ET: "I didn't have my eyelashes on but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear... but obviously the Oprah Winfrey show is not shown in Zurich."

Despite having climbed the ranks, Oprah still faces instances of racism and sexism.

She then asked to see a specific item, which was, according to a report by the AP a Tom Ford Jennifer bag. The cashier, however, refused the request, noting that the bag was “too expensive” for her. The woman’s ignorance of pop culture aside, the incident has attracted lots of attention in the past week, sparking up discussions of racism and sexism and given Oprah and many others an opportunity to comment on the wider issue of prejudice.

Is Oprah's Confrontation With A Shop Clerk A Sign Of The Times?

Oprah Winfrey Tina Turner

Oprah Winfrey is a billionaire and a well-known and respected media magnate, but even she is occasionally faced with prejudice and discrimination. The much publicized incident Winfrey recently went through at a high-end Zurich store was just one example. The rundown is simple – shopping for a birthday gift for gal pal Tina Turner, Oprah walked into Trois Pommes, a luxury retailer carrying brands like Celine, Jil Sander, Lanvin – the usual suspects. Even in full Oprah garb, however, she received an unexpectedly chilly welcome.

Oprah's wealth usually exempts her from the typical discrimination.

Oprah recalled the incident in The International Business Times: “I was in Zurich the other day, in a store whose name I will not mention. I didn't have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear. I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously, the Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Zurich. I go into a store and I say to the woman, 'Excuse me, may I see the bag right above your head?' and she says to me, 'No. It's too expensive.”

Tina Turner Will Live Out Her Golden Years As A Swiss Citizen

Tina Turner

The original diva, Tina Turner, is taking her retirement very seriously it would seem.

Recently, it was revealed by Fox News that Turner, 73, has given up her American citizenship in favor of a Swiss passport. The entertainer has lived in a Zurich neighborhood since the mid-90s and apparently, the only logical step at this point was to make it official. "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here," she told German tabloid Blick. "I cannot imagine a better place to live."

The council of Kuensnacht (the suburb, where Turner has lived for the past couple of decades or so) announced the decision to grant the singer citizenship in a notice, published in the Friday edition of the official Zuerichsee-Zei-tung newspaper. Of course, the move is as of yet unofficial, because approval has to be granted at the state level, but we can’t imagine any country that wouldn’t be proud to have Miss Turner as their citizen.

Tina Turner Turns Her Back On America To Become A Swiss Citizen

Tina Turner

Tina Turner is following in the recently trodden footsteps of French actor Gerard Depardieu and renouncing her citizenship to her mother country, as the legendary singer has decided to say so long and farewell to the United States for good as she has become a fully-fledge Swiss citizen.

The 'Proud Mary' singer, who was born in Nutbush, Tennessee, has been living in the Swiss city of Zurich for close to twenty years now and decided that it is time to make things official as she has handed her US Passport in and picked up a shiny new Swiss one instead. Although Turner has yet to make any official declaration of her new citizenship, local newspaper Zuerichsee-Zeitung has said that the singer has been granted citizenship in the country already and that it is only a matter of time now until things become official.

One source close to Tina told the paper, "She appreciates the beautiful scenery, the friendly people, the game of the four seasons," adding, "She is happy, as it was included here, as they are treated in a friendly and unobtrusive."

Adele To Sing The New James Bond Theme ‘Skyfall’

Adele is to join the ranks of the musical elite, having been chosen to sing the theme to the new James Bond movie “Skyfall”.

The song, “Skyfall” which shares its name with the title of the film, has been written by Paul Epworth. Rumours of her involvement with the Bond franchise were put in place when she “hinted she would be working on [a 'special project'] during an interview on Jonathan Ross's chat show on ITV1 in September 2011” (BBC).

The history of the James Bond theme includes only the best and most iconic of musicians and bands, including Sir Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Madonna, Tina Turner, Tom Jones and most recently a collaboration between Jack White and Alicia Keys.

Has Adele Recorded A Song For The New James Bond Film ‘Skyfall’?

Adele Shirley Bassey Tina Turner Sir Paul McCartney Jonathan Ross Tinie Tempah

There has been no official announcement yet by Sony Pictures, but according to the BBC rumours are growing stronger that pop sensation Adele will be taking the vocal reigns of singing the official song for the 23rd James Bond movie. Many are surprised that Sony hasn’t yet made the move to announce who will be doing the Skyfall the theme song, which has traditionally been a big draw for artists – Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner and Sir Paul McCartney are just three who’ve written or collaborated on Bond themes in the past.

Several news outlets have started reporting that the deal has been confirmed, and the BBC have pointed to several quotes from last year that suggest the multi-million selling artist is going be the chosen voice for Skyfall. "I'm going back in the studio in November, fingers crossed," Adele told Jonathan Ross on his show last year, adding "Well this is actually a theme, what I've got to do for, um… Wow. That's really giving something away isn't it?”

Last year Adele’s pal Tinie Tempah seemed to suggest that she had recorded a song for the film too, saying "I was with her (Adele) yesterday, she was telling me about it and that's amazing. I've always wanted to do a Bond theme. I'm a bit jealous actually. No, let's leave it to her, it's always a really big diva that does it right?" Until that official word comes from Sony comes we still won’t know, but with the recent flurry of reports, it would seem highly likely that it will be Adele.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Review

Good
Two men enter, one man leave!

Let's face it, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome isn't terribly memorable aside from its to-the-death cage battles, with Mel Gibson's road warrior doing a little battle for Bartertown (headed by a ridiculously over the top Tina Turner). It will all end as expected -- with a bunch of crazy car (and train!) stunts, but why subject us to Mad Max becoming a hero to a bunch of urchin children living out in the boonies? As Turner herself said, we don't need another hero.
