Legendary ‘Doctor Who’ actor Tom Baker has made a surprising return as the Time Lord to film new scenes in order to complete a long-lost episode of the BBC science-fiction show.

The loveably eccentric Baker, the longest-serving Doctor and now aged 83, has not starred as the Gallifreyan since 1981, when the character regenerated and the role was taken over by Peter Davison.

However, nearly 40 years on, the English actor has been persuaded to put on his trademark hat and stripey scarf once again, in order to finish off an episode that began filming in 1979 but which never completed due to BBC strike action.

Today is Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary, in case you hadn’t noticed by the Google Doodle and pretty much everyone online talking about it non-stop for the past month or so. It is also another day closer to Matt Smith’s departure with this year’s Christmas special. In the spirit of celebrating both the show and Smith’s place in its illustrious history, we’ve compiled a brief list of the most memorable Doctors in DW history, to see where Smith ranks among them.

5. This spot is often given to Peter Davison, aka The Fifth Doctor. His hiring at the time was somewhat controversial, since he is the youngest actor (besides Matt Smith himself) to take on the part of the centuries-old Time Lord. We’ve got to give it to Davison, however. He did create a complex character and was really adept at portraying the Doctor’s internal conflict. Fifth place it is.

Buckingham Palace was held under siege by Daleks today. Well sort of: scores of Doctor Who actors and guests attended a very special 50th birthday celebration of the BBC sci-fi show ahead of this coming weekend's hotly anticipated anniversary episode.

DW stars new and old joined the Countess of Wessex at the palace for a royal party. Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Matt Smith and John Hurt arrived to defend the palace from daleks with current and former assistant Jenna-louise Coleman and Catherine Tate.

The upcoming 50th anniversary of legendary British sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' has sent a flurry of fervent excitement through fans everywhere who are now spending every waking hour wondering what producers could possibly have dreamt up for this milestone celebration. Rumours have been flying around everywhere suggesting jaw dropping twists and major reunions (some of which are frankly impossible) and it is true to say that everyone is hoping for it to be their favourite 'Doctor Who' story ever.

There are, at least, some definite confirmations about what we can expect for the upcoming anniversary show. On November 23rd 2013 (that's precisely 50 years on from the airing of the first ever episode 'An Unearthly Child') a special 3D show will be aired on BBC HD and in cinemas. It's a rather apt way of celebrating 50 years; by using our own technological advances on a show full of gadgetry. Lead writer Steven Moffat told the Guardian: 'Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside' - making a reference, of course, to the Doctor's TARDIS; a police box spaceship that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

What with Jake Schreier's upcoming movie 'Robot & Frank' scheduled for release in the UK on March 8th 2013 and talks of 'Star Wars: Episode VII' being in the making, we've put together a list of what we think are the best robots that we've ever seen on screen. To mark the 50th anniversary of Dr Who Royal Mail has revealed a stamp set with the faces of 11 Dr Whos plus four of the most evil and notorious villains.

Andrew Hammond speaking on behalf of the Royal Mail said to the BBC that the commemorative selection will "pay tribute to the brilliant actors that have played the Doctor over the years, as well as the adversaries that helped make the show so popular." They'll be released in 2013, marking the 50th year since it was first seen, in 1963. It ran with series upon series until 1989 when it was stopped. However, in 2005 it made a triumphant return and has enjoyed fantastic viewing figures ever since. 

Matt Smith is the current doctor and he'll be one of the faces of the stamps, along with David Tenant, Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker, and William Hartnell who was the first doctor.
