Tom Cruise

Biography

Tom Cruise (born 03.07.1962) is an American actor, with three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes to his name.

Childhood: Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in New York, Cruise is the son of Mary Lee and Thomas Cruise Mapother III. Cruise was raised and educated in Ontario, Canada as his father had taken a job as Defence Consultant with the Canadian Army.

Mary left Tom's father when Tom was 12 and the family lived in a number of different cities. Whilst he was recovering from a wrestling injury, Cruise decided to audition for the lead in a school production of Guys and Dolls. It was this role that made him decide to become an actor.

Acting Career: In 1981, Tom Cruise gained his first film role: a small part in Endless Love, which starred Brooke Shields. He also had a larger part alongside Sean Penn in Taps, also released in 1981. Two years later, Cruise was cast in The Outsiders, a Francis Ford Coppola film that also starred Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe. Also in 1983, Cruise appeared in Losin' It, with Shelly Long and Risky Business, which is widely credited as the film that brought Cruise to the public eye. His fourth film of the year was All the Right Moves.

After featuring in Ridley Scott's fantasy picture, Legend, Cruise was cast by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson to appear in Top Gun. It has been reported that Cruise initially turned down the offer but helped to alter the script and eventually took the part. The film opened in 1986 and was the highest grossing film of the year, making over $350 million worldwide. The same year, Cruise starred in The Color of Money, for which co-star Paul Newman won an Oscar.

Two years later, Cruise starred in another two highly successful films. The first was Cocktail, a light-hearted tale in which he played a bartender. The second was Rain Man, which also starred Dustin Hoffman. Rain Man won four of the eight Academy Awards for which it was nominated. This success was continued when Tom Cruise received more Academy Award nominations, this time for his role in Born on the Fourth of July.

Tom then went on to star in Days of Thunder and Far and Away, two films in which he co-starred with his future wife, Nicole Kidman. These were followed with his role in A Few Good Men, with Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson. He then gained a role alongside Gene Hackman in The Firm, based on John Grisham's best-selling novel.

In 1994, Cruise featured in Interview With The Vampire, based on Anne Rice's novel. Brad Pitt and Christian Slater also starred in the film, but Anne Rice was overtly critical of the decision to cast Cruise in the film.

Two years later, Cruise produced and starred in Mission: Impossible, a remake of the 1960s TV series. The film was the third best-selling movie of the year, grossing over $456 million. He then earned another Academy Award for his role in Jerry Maguire, which featured his infamous line "Show Me the Money!"

In 1999, Cruise starred alongside Nicole Kidman (to whom he was still married) in Eyes Wide Shut. The film was Stanley Kubrick's last venture before he died and took two years to complete. Magnolia was released in the same year and Cruise earned a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award Nomination for his role in the film. The next year, Cruise reprised his role in Mission: Impossible in the sequel, directed by John Woo. This was followed by Vanilla Sky, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report and the Last Samurai.

2004 saw Cruise deviate from his usual good-guy role, in Michael Mann's Collateral, in which he played a hitman. He worked again with Spielberg, in War of the Worlds, the third highest-selling film of 2005. The next year, he starred in the third installment of the Mission: Impossible trilogy. In 2007, he starred in the drama, Lions for Lambs with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

2008 saw him in the comedy 'Tropic Thunder' with Ben Stiller and Jack Black for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. He also had the lead role in 'Valkyrie' alongside Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy that same year.

In 2010, he teamed up with Cameron Diaz in 'Knight and Day' and announced 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' which came out in 2011 to much box office success.

In 2012, he played the titled role in 'Jack Reacher' opposite Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins and starred as Stacie Jaxx in 'Rock of Ages' with Julianne Hough and Russell Brand, though the movie performed poorly at the box office. 2013 saw him in the sci-fi action flick 'Oblivion' opposite Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko.

Personal Life: Tom Cruise's first marriage was in 1987, to Mimi Rogers. They divorced in 1990. It is believed that it was Rogers who introduced Cruise to Scientology, the religious sect of which he is now a figurehead.

In 1990, Cruise remarried, to his previous co-star, Nicole Kidman. The pair adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. Kidman later became pregnant with their first child, but the couple separated months before their 10th anniversary and Kidman suffered a miscarriage shortly after the split.

In 2006, Cruise married the actress Katie Holmes. They have a daughter, Suri together. The couple divorced in 2012 though the exact terms have not been reported.

Lol, Tom Cruise Did Not Use A Prosthetic Ass In 'Valkyrie'

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has denied the hilarious rumours that he wore a ‘fake ass’ during his movie Valkyrie several years ago, after a memorable screengrab went viral earlier this year.

Back in August, a Twitter user took a photo of a scene from Cruise’s 2008 World War II film Valkyrie, and used it to present a theory that the Hollywood star used a prosthetic posterior during filming. “hello, please, i present the theory that for one single shot in Valkyrie (2008), at 5:12, tom cruise wears a fake butt. Observe,” the user wrote.

During an interview on Tuesday (September 26th) with Screen Rant, 55 year old Cruise denied the rumours – although it was the first time he’d heard of them! “There was no prosthetic in Valkyrie,” Cruise said. “No.”

Court Documents Claim Tom Cruise May Have Been Partly To Blame For Stunt Pilot Deaths

Tom Cruise

Court documents allege that Tom Cruise may have been partly responsible for a plane crash in 2015 that claimed the lives of two pilots during the filming of the star’s upcoming movie American Made.

Two stunt pilots hired for American Made were killed in the fatal crash when their twin-engine Piper Smith Aerostar 600 went down in the Colombian mountains in September 2015. Pilots Alan Purwin and Carlos Berl were both killed, while a third passenger, cinematographers Jimmy Lee Garland, was left paralyzed in the bottom half of his body.

Two years later, the families of Purwin and Berl are suing the film’s producers (Imagine Entertainment, Vendian Entertainment and Cross Creek Pictures). They alleged in new court documents, obtained by People magazine, that both Cruise and director Doug Liman contributed in part to the accident by making excessive demands on the pilots for the purpose of filming multiple takes – though they themselves are not actually named in the lawsuit.

Katie Holmes And Jamie Foxx Finally Confirm Relationship

Katie Holmes Jamie Foxx Tom Cruise

After having been widely reported to have been in a relationship for the best part of four years, Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx have at last gone public with their romance this week.

The couple, who are widely believed to have been dating secretly since 2013, were spotted together in public for the first time, walking on the beach in Malibu, California on Labor Day on Monday (September 4th). In contrast to the secrecy of years gone by, they held hands and wore matching hats as they strolled along the oceanside.

Foxx and Holmes have taken serious measures to keep their relationship under wraps for all this time, with rumours abounding that Katie’s ex-husband Tom Cruise included a clause in their 2012 divorce settlement banning her from dating publicly for five years.

Tom Cruise Dove Into The Satire And Humour Of American Made

Tom Cruise

Cruise's new movie American Made is based on the frankly insane true story of Barry Seal, who in the 1980s became entangled between the CIA, DEA, White House, the Contra rebels in Central America and the Medellin cocaine cartel.

Tom Cruise plays Barry Seal in American Made

Famously passionate about his roles, Cruise says that characters like Barry really fire him up. "I'm just interested in life," he says. "So when you see someone in a different life, you can't help but become more interested in it. And I have the privilege to put it up there and share it with everyone."

Good

An enjoyably freewheeling tone and Tom Cruise's star wattage combine to make this an entertaining true story. Packed with an astonishing sequence of absurd twists and turns, it's the kind of movie that could only be based on real-life events. But Cruise kind of overwhelms the material, turning it into a film about his trademark cock-of-the-walk swagger rather than an actual man who got caught up in a series of outrageous situations.

It opens in 1978, as airline pilot Barry Seal (Cruise) is approached by shifty CIA handler Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) and offered a great job flying over Central America and taking spy photos of freedom fighters and terrorists. With his wife Lucy (Sarah Wright Olsen) oblivious, the job soon escalates into an arms-delivery service across the region. This introduces Barry to Colombian drug lord Jorge Ochoa (Alejandro Edda), who offers him huge amounts of cash to carry cocaine back to America on his return flights. Soon Barry is running a massive business under the protection of the CIA, DEA and Reagan's White House. But these are dangerous people, and a series of shaky events reminds Barry how precarious his position is.

The film is narrated with videotapes Barry records in 1986 to document everything he got up to over the previous eight years. This gives director Doug Liman and screenwriter Gary Spinelli a framework on which to hang a series of rapid-fire set pieces, and the story leaps quickly from one crazy moment to the next, rarely pausing for breath. This is a lot of fun to watch, especially because the details scattered throughout the script are so jaw-dropping. But this race through the material doesn't offer much time for character development, and Barry never seems like a person in his own right: he's Tom Cruise, flashing that white grin while diving into a series of dangerous stunts.

Tom Cruise Breaks Ankle On Set Of 'Mission: Impossible 6', Filming Postponed

Tom Cruise

Paramount Pictures have confirmed recent reports that Tom Cruise had injured himself on the set of Mission: Impossible 6, saying that filming has been put on hold while the film’s lead star recovers from a broken ankle.

Pictures obtained by TMZ on Sunday (August 13th) seemed to show Cruise injuring himself while leaping in a harness between two buildings, colliding with and clambering onto the second after impacting it awkwardly. Later, he was seen limping around the set. A subsequent report in Variety suggested he had injured his hip as well as his right ankle.

“During production on the latest Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise broke his ankle while performing a stunt,” Paramount said in a statement on Thursday (August 17th). “Production will go on hiatus while Tom makes a full recovery. Tom wants to thank you all for your concern and support and can’t wait to share the film with everyone next summer.”

Has Tom Cruise Injured Himself After 'Mission: Impossible 6' Stunt?

Tom Cruise

Acting can be a pretty dangerous job for actors, especially when they insist on doing their own stunts. Tom Cruise, for example, managed to do himself an injury while shooting 'Mission: Impossible 6' in London this week, slamming into a building that he was supposed to jump onto.

Instead of employing the use of a stunt double, the Hollywood superstar is still doing his own stunts at 55-years-old, but that does not mean it doesn't sometimes go badly wrong. During a move where it seemed he had to leap from a set of scaffolding to the roof of a building in London early today (August 14th 2017), he managed to miss the jump by mere inches and instead crashed into the wall with some force, apparently injuring his leg.

How Tom Cruise And Russell Crowe 'Fleshed Out' Their Fight Scene

Tom Cruise Russell Crowe

'The Mummy' unites two Hollywood legends - Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe - for the very first time, and it seems their dynamic is an important theme that carries the plot of this new horror adaptation. It seems that both actors enjoyed working with each other immensely.

Casting aside rumours of an on-set feud, both Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe only have animosity as part of their characters of Nick Morton and Dr. Henry Jekyll respectively. In fact, they got on tremendously well on the set of Alex Kurtzman's 'The Mummy', which is set for released this week.

The Mummy - Featurettes, Clips and Trailer

During a deadly military operation in Egypt, an explosion uncovers an overwhelming secret buried in the sand. Army officer Nick Morton teams up with an archaeologist named Jenny Halsey to investigate the new find, but what looks like an ancient tomb is found very quickly by Halsey to be a prison, which tells of the fate of Ahmanet; the heir to the throne of Egypt. Destined to be queen, Ahmanet's quest for power led her on a murderous rampage when she was alive, and her punishment saw her sealed in her sarcophagus and buried alive. The power has remained, and the discovery has released a dark force that nearly kills them all as they attempt to fly the sarcophagus back to London. Somehow, Nick manages to survive an horrific plane crash completely unscathed, with the spirit of Ahmanet using him to regain her power back. She won't stop until she has seized control on the world that slipped through her grasp all those centuries ago, and London is the first target.

A re-boot of the original 1932 horror (which previously spawned the 1999 trilogy of the same name and the Dwayne Johnson spin-off 'The Scorpion King'), 'The Mummy' is a brand new story based on Egyptian myth. It has been directed by Alex Kurtzman ('People Like Us') and written by Jon Spaihts ('Passengers', 'Doctor Strange', 'Prometheus') and the Academy Award winning Christopher McQuarrie ('The Usual Suspects', 'Jack Reacher', 'Edge of Tomorrow'). The new trailer features a part instrumental of The Rolling Stones hit 'Paint it Black'. 'The Mummy' is set to be released on June 9th 2017.

There are also a number of excellent featurettes to watch. The Zero gravity shoot is particularly fascinating to learn about. To replicate zero gravity, a specially equipped plane must fly to a great height and then basically go into a freefall for 22 seconds - as the time frame is so short, they had to reset the shots over forty times.
