Tom Hanks is proud of his and Rita Wilson's son Chester 'Chet' Hanks for seeking help for his addiction problems.

The aspiring rapper - previously known as Chet Haze - took to Instagram last week to reveal that he was hooked on cocaine and had checked into rehab earlier this summer in order to beat his demons and Tom, 59, praised him for seeking help.

He told 'Entertainment Tonight': ''As a parent, you love your kids unconditionally. You support them every step of the way.

''You've got to applaud the bravery and honesty when it actually comes out of your own house.''

Speaking openly about his addiction last week, Chet, 25, said in a series of video clips: ''I've been in rehab. I've been trying to get my s**t together and I'm doing pretty damn good.

''I just really had to take a look at myself and my life and the way s**t was going and all the crazy stupid s**t I was doing and just finally admit to myself that it wasn't working.''

He added: ''A couple months ago I was selling coke [and] doing coke until I couldn't even snort it up my nose anymore because it was so clogged. I even smoked crack.''

The musician believes his struggles with addiction stem from his lifestyle in the public eye and his difficulty trying to ''fit in'' and follow in his famous father's footsteps.

He explained: ''It's been a long journey discovering who I am because all the pressures that I've dealt with in my life - you know, being the son of my dad and everything.''
