Tom Hanks is helping Meg Ryan get over her broken heart.

The 58-year-old Oscar-winner - who is married to fellow actress Rita Wilson - has been supporting his former 'Sleepless in Seattle' co-star following her split from rocker John Mellencamp.

A source told National Enquirer magazine: ''Meg and Tom have remained close pals since the 1990s. Tom's wife, Rita Wilson, knows it's not romantic. He has always been an emotional rock for Meg - and she needs him now more than ever.''

It isn't the first time that Tom - who also starred with the blonde beauty in the rom-com 'You've Got Mail' in 1998 - has helped the blonde beauty, 52, get over a breakup.

The source explained: ''Tom was there when Meg busted up with husband Dennis Quaid in 2001 over her affair with Russell Crowe - and he was there again, encouraging her when she adopted a 14-month-old girl from China five years later.

''Now Tom will help soothe her during this breakup. She feels lucky to have him in her life.''

Meanwhile, it is thought the duo are planning to team up yet again in the upcoming World War II drama, 'Ithaca' - which Meg is both directing and starring in.

The source said: ''Working with Tom again will be refreshing for Meg. He's just the tonic she needs to get over John and resume her life.''
