Joanne, who worked as a model and a member of the Pan Am cabin crew, married the TV legend in 1963, a year after he shot to fame as host of America's The Tonight Show.

They divorced in 1972 and Johnny went on to marry two more times before his death in 2005.

After splitting from Carson, Joanne struck up a close friendship with celebrated author Truman Capote. He had a writing room at her home in L.A. and died there in 1984. She married once more, but divorced a second time.

She will reportedly be interred next to Capote at the Westwood Cemetery in L.A.
