Tyler Perry Cast Alongside Ben Affleck & Neil Patrick Harris In David Fincher's 'Gone Girl'

Tyler Perry David Fincher Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike Neil Patrick Harris

Tyler Perry is the latest in a long list of big-names to be cast in the upcoming thriller from David Fincher; Gone Girl. The adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel of the same name already features a strong cast, including Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck in the main starring roles, and given Fincher's history of hiring the exact actor needed for a role, Perry's addition will hopefully be a fruitful one. Flynn is also writing the screenplay.

Tyler Perry’s latest venture tells the tale of a marriage counsellor whose own marriage is hit with complications when she starts an affair with one of her clients and her professional and personal lives collide. So, Just How Bad Is Alex Cross?

Tyler Perry Morgan Freeman Idris Elba

Alex Cross, the crime-thriller starring Tyler Perry, hits theaters this weekend on the back of some of the worst reviews of the year. The film, based on the novels of James Patterson, follows Cross, a homicide detective and psychologist who is pursuing a serial killer.

You may remember the same character being portrayed by Morgan Freeman in the enjoyable 'Kiss the Girls' as well as in 'Along Came a Spider.' The Wire's own Idris Elba was previously attached to the project, though we assume he probably got a whiff of the script and got the hell out of there. The movie holds a laughable 9% on Rotten Tomatoes, not helped by reviews such as that from Roger Ebert, who wrote, "The direction by Rob Cohen is so careless that the film's climax is set up by a car crash that, if I am not mistaken, is completely coincidental." To put that rating into context: it's 3% less than Jaws 3, and 14% less than Flubber. Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "[Cross] has a really bad temper, really big guns and really bad dialogue. He will use all of them excessively if pushed." Manolha Dargis of the New York Times hammered the final nail in the coffin, writing, "A grim, dispiritingly stupid waste of time, energy, money and talent ..."

So there you have it, cinemagoers. Alex Cross is really bad. Though we suspect it'll find itself in the Box Office Top 3 come Monday, which is quite depressing really.

Hot Tickets! This Weekend's Movie Releases: The Sessions, Paranormal Activity 4, Alex Cross

Helen Hunt John Hawkes William H Macy Tyler Perry Matthew Fox Carmen Ejogo

We’re entering something of a pre-Christmas lull in the land of the blockbuster movie but there is still plenty of activity in the land of cinema this weekend… and not all of it is paranormal.

The film that everyone is talking about this week is The Sessions. The movie – starring Helen Hunt, John Hawkes and William H Macy - debuted at the Sundance Festival earlier this year and wowed the critics with its “profoundly sex-positive” story. The Sessions tells the tale of a man, paralysed by polio, who seeks the help of a priest and eventually a sex therapist, to help him lose his virginity. The performances are touching, the script (based on the writings of California-based journalist Mark O’Brien) is tender and funny. If critical opinion is anything to go by, The Sessions should be heading towards the top of the box office chart.

Early 'Alex Cross' Reviews Make For Uneasy Reading

Tyler Perry Matthew Fox

The first few reviews of 'Alex Cross' are in, and it's not making pleasant reading for director Rob Cohen and his assembled cast and crew. The film's stars Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox and Edwards Burns are all fully on the promotional campaign for the film, which comes out on November 30, 2012, but they might have a bit work to do to sway the critics if the opening conclusions are anything to go by.

The Hollywood Reporter rant "You almost feel sorry for Tyler Perry, stepping out of his own universe for the first time to try to expand his range and finding himself in something as thoroughly dismal as Alex Cross". Variety are slightly kinder, but still come down on the negative side, writing "The director acquits himself on the action front, but makes the simple procedural elements feel wooden and melodramatic, particularly in sappy home-life scenes."

Screen International are another unimpressed with Perry's attempt to step away from his hugely popular drag character Madea Simmons. "While Tyler Perry no doubt envisions "Alex Cross" as his opportunity to branch out, the actors around him rightly regard this pedestrian effort as just another gig" they write. With the film still over a month away there is the chance it could claw back some acclaim, but two bad reviews from the usually reliably Hollywood Reporter and Variety are bad news indeed.

Alex Cross - Trailer Trailer

Alex Cross is a homicide detective in Washington DC who comes across a series of gruesome and elaborate murders on duty. The victims look as if they've been tortured to death with a reasonable amount of skill, as if the perpetrator was an expert in inflicting pain. Cross deduces that their suspect is ex-military going by his techniques and it doesn't take long before he and the murderer, Michael 'The Butcher' Sullivan make contact. It is clear that Sullivan is deranged, believing that inflicting pain is his calling in life. In spite of any mental incapacities, however, Cross loses all sense of his own morality and indeed sanity when Sullivan targets and murders his beautiful wife on their anniversary and he sets out to track down this killer once and for all, though things do not appear as easy as he might've thought.

'Alex Cross' is the crime thriller adapted from the popular American novelist James Patterson's twelfth book on the character, 'Cross'. The movie's screenplay has been written by Marc Moss, who also wrote the previous Alex Cross-based movie 'Along Came a Spider', alongside Kerry Williamson in her writing debut. With a director like Rob Cohen ('The Fast and the Furious', 'xXx'), expect high-energy action and thrilling danger from this exciting upcoming flick set ton hit UK cinemas on November 30th 2012.

Starring: Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Jean Reno, Giancarlo Esposito, Rachel Nichols, Edward Burns, John C. McGinley, Yara Shahidi, Chad Lindberg, Cicely Tyson, Carmen Ejogo, Stephanie Jacobsen and Ingo Rademacher

Tough At The Top? Not For Oprah Winfrey, Forbes’ Highest Paid Woman In Hollywood… Again.

Oprah Winfrey Britney Spears Taylor Swift Rihanna Ellen Degeneres Lady GaGa Jennifer Lopez Tyler Perry

Oprah Winfrey is still the highest paid woman in Hollywood. The stalwart chat show host has retained her position at the top of Forbes’ list of the highest paid women in Hollywood. Winfrey’s OWN TV network may be struggling to attract the same number of viewers as her old show but she clearly hasn’t lost all of her money-making charms, as she remains at the top of the list of high earners for May 2011 to May 2012.

During that time, Oprah Winfrey is reported to have earned a staggering $165 million (£103 million), Hollywood.com reports. And if that’s just a year’s earnings, then Oprah Winfrey’s net worth must be truly enormous. It’s an impressive salary and becomes even more shocking when you learn that the second place highest earner, Britney Spears, earned less than half that, with $58 million (£36.5 million). Not that Britney’s pay packet is anything to be sniffed at, of course, but it sure helps to put Oprah’s vast wealth into perspective. Third place in the list of leading ladies went to country music star Taylor Swift, who earned a reported $57 million (£35.6 million). Other stars that made the list included Rihanna and Ellen Degeneres, who tied with $53 million (£33 million), and Lady GaGa and Jennifer Lopez, who also tied with $52 million (£32.5 million).

It was recently announced that Tyler Perry will be producing shows for Oprah Winfrey’s TV network. The news marks a move into scripted television for the network and in a statement, Winfrey said “We are all energised by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world."

OWN Sign Tyler Perry Up For Exclusive Producer Deal

Tyler Perry Oprah Winfrey

Tyler Perry, the producer behind sitcoms like House Of Payne is to soon start to produce shows exclusively for Oprah Winfrey's OWN network, according to The New York Times. It's been well documented that OWN has been struggling for viewers, and Winfrey's retirement from the talk show game was as much down to the legendary chat host wanting to focus all her efforts on reviving her ailing project as it was the fact she'd achieved all she needed to within its sphere.

The network revealed that it hoped to be running two Perry-scripted shows by the middle of next year, with a statement from Winfrey reading: "I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world."

The network didn't reveal how much money they'd given Perry, though it's believed that it'll take up a considerable amount of their budget given that they have signed him exclusively. In his own statement, Perry said "It's a dream realized to partner with Oprah and bring scripted programming to OWN. She has accomplished so much with the network and I'm excited to work with her to be a part of its continued growth."

The Family That Preys Review

OK
Tyler Perry is trying. Instead of sticking exclusively to the urban morality plays that made him a certified superstar, he appears to be broadening his niche-based appeal. And he's doing so by taking risks both in and outside the medium. Sure, most of his movies have been nothing more than mere translations of his theatrical works, but efforts like Daddy's Little Girls, and now The Family That Preys, show an artist who is at least endeavoring to expand his horizons.

Alice Pratt (Alfre Woodard) and Charlotte Cartwright (Kathy Bates) have been friends for over 30 years. The former runs a small diner. The latter is the CEO of a local construction company. Alice has two daughters -- snooty career gal Andrea (Sanaa Lathan) and honest, hardworking Pam (Taraji P. Henson). Charlotte has a conniving son named William (Cole Hauser) who cheats on his wife Jillian (KaDee Strickland). After marrying the decent Chris (Rockmond Dunbar), Andrea begins a torrid affair with her boss -- who happens to be William. He wants to take over for his aging mother, believing it is his birthright. In the meantime, a new employee (Robin Givens) stirs things up for the adulterous duo. Soon, all the simmering secrets in the Pratt and Cartwright households will be out in the open.
