2020's Most Searched For Artists On Google

Kanye West Shakira Cardi B EDDIE VAN HALEN Grimes Van Halen

After a crazy year of CoVID19 enforced lockdowns this year's most searched for things on Google were likely to have been skewed somewhat by the abnormality of the circumstances. Joe Wicks certainly got people interested in his fitness routines whilst banana bread and sourdough recipes were de rigueur. Among Us rose to the top of the gaming pile whilst the how to's list included, how to cut men's hair and how to make hand sanitizer. People we'd previously never heard of became household names, including Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin, and sadly, others like Caroline Flack were searched for altogether different reasons.

Politics played a huge part in driving our searches with Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson and Kanye West leading the way and the Black Lives Matter movement came to the fore, prompting many searches including Juneteenth.

Of course our main focus was on Coronavirus which, as was to be expected, topped the overall most searched for topic on Google in the UK. In entertainment there were a few obvious chart toppers but also a few wild cards. Let's take a look at who you searched for in 2020.

Eddie Van Halen Blames Guitar Picks For Cancer Diagnosis

EDDIE VAN HALEN Van Halen David Lee Roth

EDDIE VAN HALEN has opened up about his cancer diagnosis over a decade ago and his subsequent recovery, blaming his condition on his guitar picks. He underwent a course of treatment for tongue cancer in 2000 and was declared free of the disease two years later, though about a third of his tongue was removed in surgery.

In a new interview with Billboard, the 60 year old has said that, while he has now quit smoking, he believes his diagnosis might have been down to when used to habitually hold his spare guitar picks in his mouth during sets. “I used metal picks - they’re brass and copper - which I always held in my mouth, in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer,” Van Halen said.

David Lee Roth suffered a nasty cut to the nose on Monday evening, as Van Halen staged a gig live on Hollywood Boulevard in a performance taped for Jimmy Kimmel's talk show. The singer sustained the injury when he hit himself with his microphone stand while twirling it around during the band’s opening number.

But Roth wasn’t going to let some blood interfere with his performance and after going offstage to receive a bandage the singer returned and continued on as if nothing had happened. The band were promoting their new live album, ‘Tokyo Dome Live in Concert’ and recently announced summer tour. But the performance actually held much more significance.

"S**tty Boy Band" One Direction Insult Van Halen

One Direction Van Halen

One Direction insult Van Halen? Yeah, we weren't expecting that one either. But according to band's bassist, Wolfgang Van Halen, the cheesy boy band weren't very nice at a Birmingham hotel.

"Fun fact: Was just insulted by that s**tty boy band #OneDirection in the lobby of our hotel this morning! Greetings Birmingham!" Wolfgang posted on Twitter, following that up with: "No joke. That ACTUALLY happened. That group of kids in #OneDirection were dickheads to @IIEROCKII @GWDrums and i." He then posted a very odd insult of his own, saying "They must call themselves that because all of their hair points #OneDirection." We don't really get it. Well, we do, but it's really not very good. Tremonti drummer Garrett Whitlock then weighed in on the fun, by tweeting, ''had a run in with some boy band in the hotel lobby. no worries. I can't take a insult from someone who doesn't even write there own tunes (sic)''. Ouch.

Wolfgang - the son of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen - has been in the music business since the Van Halen family formed the band 1972. The band has been keeping a low profile since Eddie underwent emergency surgery for Diverticulitis, a digestive disorder of the colon, in August.

Van Halen, A Different Kind Of Truth Album Review

When a band releases its 12th studio album after an absence of 14 years, it's only natural to view the record with an amount of suspicion. Add to that the seemingly fashionable move of keeping it in the family (Jason Bonham did fill his fathers shoes for Led Zep), and digging up abandoned ideas from your heyday (R.E.M. resurrecting songs like 'Bad Day'), you're left with a band satisfying the fans but not really looking to move past their autopilot setting. However, Van Halen has ticked those boxes while also defying the odds to create an album as good as any in their back catalogue.
