Like many teenagers, Prison Break star Wentworth Miller had a tough time growing up, particularly because he was struggling with his sexuality for a long time. During his speech at a recent Human Rights Campaign gala in Seattle, Miller revealed some of the darker moments of his life.

Miller wasn't always as happy and successful as he is now.

"The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15," he said via E!News. "I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills. I don't remember what happened over the next couple days, but I'm pretty sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to school pretending everything was fine. And when someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I say no, because I told no one."

The teenager, who would go on to become a successful television actor, was pushed to the extreme reaction by bullying and pressure to conform, which he found difficult. In a quote, which many teenagers can relate to, Miller recounted the incredible pressure he felt and which pushed him to attempt suicide.

Miller struggled with his sexuality and self-acceptance as a teenager.

"Growing up I was a target. Speaking the right way, standing the right way, holding your wrist the right way. Every day was a test and there was a thousand ways to fail. A thousand ways to portray yourself to not live up to someone else's standards of what was accepted."

In the end, however, Miller managed to find peace and acceptance. Despite only outing himself in his public letter to the St Petersburg Film Festival, Miller has been out to his family for a longtime. Now, after the difficult admission, the Prison Break actor is highly engaged in advocacy and attempting to help those, who are still in similarly dire straits.
