MTV series ‘Scream’ paid tribute to late director Wes Craven at the beginning of Tuesday’s first season finale. The episode began with some fittingly spooky piano music as the message, ‘In memory of Wes Craven 1939-2015. Thanks for the screams,’ appeared on screen.

The series, which premiered on MTV, in June is based on the string of horror films Craven directed in the 1990s, starting with Scream in 1996. The late director had also worked as an executive producer on the series, although his involvement was said to have been minimal.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the season finale 'Scream’ executive producer Jill Blotevogel said, “We would not exist if it wasn’t for him. We’re all still reeling at the suddenness of this."

“I was just really shaken when I heard the news. He really is one of the greats as a creative person — I won’t even say as a titan of the horror drama because he could do some many things. He was amazing.”

Craven died on Sunday (August 31st) after battling brain cancer. The 76 year old’s death was announced by his family who said in a statement, “It is with deep sadness we inform you that Wes Craven passed away. Our hearts are broken.”

Following the news of his death tributes poured in from fans and celebrities wishing to honour the iconic director. Writing on twitter Courteney Cox, who starred in the original Scream movie, said, “Today the world lost a great man, my friend and mentor, Wes Craven. My heart goes out to his family.”
