Actress-turned-Tv presenter Whoopi Goldberg has cleared up reports suggesting she passed gas during Wednesday's (10Dec14) episode of her U.S. talk show The View, insisting she was simply making a joke to cover up a strange sound effect.

Singer Ashanti was being interviewed on the show, when the Oscar winner suddenly stood up and fled her seat as she used her arms to fan away the purported fart.

The incident caused the R&B star and Goldberg's co-hosts, including actresses Rosie Perez and Rosie O'Donnell, to burst into laughter, and the gas attack quickly hit headlines.

However, Goldberg has since set the record straight about what some members of the press have dubbed "Fart-gate", insisting it was all a joke.

Explaining her actions on Thursday's (11Dec14) show, she said, "There was a sound effect that we had never heard... before. I'm thinking, 'Damn, that's weird, what can I do?' Oh, I know! I'm gonna pretend I let a little something go. As a joke.

"Now, these folks (reporters) are emailing people, running up on people (her co-hosts) saying, 'How do you feel about the fart that Whoopi did on The View?' It's a joke!

"I know you think that I don't do that any more (make jokes), I do, I make funnies. I don't fart on air for real!"

She added, "This is the second time I've covered something like this (pretended to fart on air), because sometimes I hear something (and) I think, 'Oh, we got to do something to get (sic) attention from it', and so I try to move it (attention away) and that's the fastest 'cause the fart joke works like that (instantly)...

"So everybody relax, I didn't fart on air, it was a joke."
