Actress/Tv host Whoopi Goldberg fought back tears on her Tv talk show The View on Thursday (20Nov14) as she paid tribute to friend and filmmaker Mike Nichols, who passed away on Wednesday (19Nov14).

Nichols, who passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest, helped launched Goldberg's acting career by creating a one-woman stage show for her in 1984 and she considers him her mentor.

In a segment on her U.S. show, co-host Rosie O'Donnell said, "Mike Nichols was the first one who first saw Whoopi performing and said, 'You got something kid'. She was a downtown street artist and he said, 'Let's do a show'. They put it together and he gave her her entire beginning of her career and recognised her brilliance before anyone else."

A choked up Goldberg added, "We did a show last year where we brought in our mentors and Mike is my mentor."
