The Producers Guild Of America Nominate '12 Years A Slave,' 'Her,' 'Blue Jasmine' And More For Daryl F. Zanuck Award

Steve McQueen Chiwetel Ejiofor Tom Hanks Joaquin Phoenix Ryan Coogler Woody Allen Sandra Bullock George Clooney Martin Scorsese Will Forte

The members of The Producer's Guild of America have cast their vote and the list of nominee's for their annual Daryl F. Zanuck Awards - their Best Picture category - have been cast. Formerly known as the Golden Laurel Awards, the PGA's are usually pretty accurate at predicting which films will go on to be nominated in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, and their winners rarely differ too.

12 Years A Slave
Chiwetel Ejiofor's powerful performance in Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave has made it a favourite for the top honour

American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Saving Mr. Banks, 12 Years a Slave, and The Wolf of Wall Street make up the full list of nominees up for awards this year, so don't be surprised to see these films still being discussed vigorously until the beginning of March.

Bruce Dern And Forte Snagged 'Nebraska' Roles, Ahead Of De Niro, Cranston

Bruce Dern Alexander Payne Will Forte Robert De Niro Bryan Cranston

After taking it easy with the breezy yet assured The Descendants, Alexander Payne appears to have gotten back his social bite with Nebraska, his road-movie with a difference starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte.

The black-and-white movie which found considerable acclaim at the festivals follows a tempestuous Missouri father (Dern) who's convinced he's won a million dollar magazine sweepstakes. His son (Forte) grudgingly agrees to drive him to Nebraska to claim his winnings.

'Nebraska' Set To Take '12 Years A Slave' To The Wire At The Oscars?

Bruce Dern Will Forte

As Nebraska finishes up its festival run – the last is today in Slovenia at the Ljubljana International Film Festival – and the dust settles on the last few reviews to be filed, we get a pretty good idea of the overall critical reception. And Nebraska’s is good.

The story sees cranky old geezer Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) get found walking to Nebraska by his son (Will Forte). He’s taking the mammoth trek in search of the $1m promised to him by a sweepstakes-marketing prize.

Chasing $1m In 'Nebraska' - Pure Black & White Suave [Trailer]

Will Forte Bruce Dern

Everything about the Nebraska trailer screams charming, except it’s so charming it doesn’t scream it; it just slowly and assertively says it in a cool American accent.

Story: Woody Grant is an old boy, unassuming, set in his ways and partial to a drink or two. He’s not privy to the luxurious side of life. Although he’s never really experienced it, but when $1m is promised to him via a marketing company talking about a huge sweepstakes prize, he sets his mind to claiming his money.

Nebraska Trailer

Woody Grant is an alcohol-swigging old man who's never had much in the way of luxury over his long life, but when he receives a letter from a marketing company about a huge sweepstakes prize, he believes that things are about to change for good. Thus, he starts to travel by foot from Billings, Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska in order to claim his $1 million award, accompanied by his supportive but extremely sceptical son David who believes it's all a scam. Along the way, they meet various relatives and old friends of Woody desperate for a piece of his wealth as the gossip spreads around the neighbouring towns like wildfire. Some are interested in being paid back with interest, and Woody's about to see just how far his debts spread.

Seth Meyers has married his long-term girlfriend, human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe, in an intimate ceremony this weekend. The couple exchanged vows in front of a select number of family and friends at the small venue in Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. Congratulations to the both of them!

Seth & Alexi exchanged vows on Sunday, 1 September

The Saturday Night Live writer and oft-star Meyers proposed to his girlfriend a little over a month ago and with seemingly no time to spare the two married promptly in a secret ceremony that was littered with famous faces. US Weekly were the first to report the celebrity wedding, noting that the couple held a rehearsal dinner outside at the Beetlebung Farm House the night before the big day.

Mumford & Sons Fans Pranked By Masquerading Comedians In 'Hopeless Wanderer' [Video]

Mumford And Sons Jason Sudeikis Ed Helms Will Forte Jason Bateman

The video begins just like any other Mumford & Sons vid; nothing to suspect here. Rays of sunlight obscure the banjo twanging members as they play in the middle of a country field. There's out of focus striding through long grass and slow motion walking up a dirt track with their folk instruments. There's no reason to believe the band on video could be any other performers than the British folksters themselves.

The Group Let Themselves Be Parodied.

That is, until the sun-streaked dust clears and our suspicions are aroused. Is that really Marcus Mumford? Isn't Ted Dwane's beard looking a bit raggier than usual? Wait a minute - that worn, rustic, wooden instrument isn't really being played. They're fakes!

That's My Boy Trailer

In his early teens, the immature and irresponsible Donny Berger struck up a brief romance with his school teacher resulting in her pregnancy. When she is jailed for having a sexual relationship with a minor, Donny is forced to raise the child (who he names Han Solo) until Hans' eighteenth birthday. Twelve years later, Donny owes $43,000 to the IRS which he must pay to avoid three years in jail. He recognises Han Solo in a magazine under the new name of Todd Peterson and reads that he is the one of the youngest hedge fund managers in the financial industry and is engaged to be married. Todd's world is turned upside down when his father (who he had attempted to erase from his life completely) turns up the day before his wedding wanting to spend quality time with his son, while really seeking help with his debt problem. The reunion forces Donny to accept the consequences of his terrible parenting.

MacGruber Review

Weak
Will Forte transfers his Saturday Night Live character to the big screen but forgets to bring along what made those sketches so hilarious. Instead of any actual comedy, this film merely resorts to easy gross-out mayhem.

MacGruber (Forte) has been presumed dead for 10 years after the villainous Dieter (Kilmer) blew up his wedding, including his bride (Rudolph). But now Dieter has a Russian nuke aimed at Washington, and only MacGruber can stop him.

Recruited by a colonel (Booth), MacGruber bumbles through the operation, rescued frequently by his former colleague and current love interest Vicki (Wiig) and bright-spark sidekick Piper (Philippe). But time is running out for an '80s-style hero struggling to adapt to the 21st century.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Review

Excellent

Like a comically deranged Twilight Zone episode, this colourful animated feature underscores its fantastical story with some intriguingly serious issues. But it never gets preachy, and a stream of warped humour will keep adults chuckling all the way through.

Geeky inventor Flint (voiced by Hader) has finally created something that will make him famous: a machine that makes food from water. When it's inadvertently catapulted into the clouds, it starts raining cheeseburgers, much to everyone's delight. Now famous, he remotely programmes the machine to rain everything from ice cream to spaghetti and meatballs. While Flint's mono-browed dad (Caan) doesn't really get him, the greedy mayor (Campbell) wants a piece of his success. Meanwhile, Flint meets weather reporter Sam (Faris), who might actually understand him.

Filmmakers Lord and Miller somehow manage to keep the film utterly silly, with outrageous visual flourishes and zany comical asides, while maintaining a sharp intelligence beneath the surface. As a result, grown-ups will probably find the film funnier than kids, who will be entranced by the visual antics and miss the sophisticated wit. And they quietly hide the serious subtext as well, including a knowing look at celebrity and pointed comments on how tricky it is for people to truly communicate.

But all of this is mere icing on the cake, as it were, for a film that's raucous, nonstop fun. Images of food falling from the sky are pure dreamlike fantasy, especially when Flint's machine overheats and produces oversized culinary delights that look utterly delicious even as they flatten the houses they land on. Of course, this gives the screenwriters plenty of running gags and punning opportunities, which the talented vocal cast run wild with.

Even side characters like Mr T's supercop and Bratt's Guatemalan cameraman get terrific moments along the way, while Flint's relationship with his dad has a surprising resonance. And along the way, there are some superb sequences that combine goofy humour with awkward emotion plus a hint of unhinged weirdness (such as the Jell-O palace). And as global chaos threatens to erupt, along with Mt Leftovers, the film develops into a hysterical disaster movie satire that's brilliantly animated and, for once, makes full use of 3D to throw everything right into our faces.

The Brothers Solomon Review

Bad
There are moments when time seems to stretch into infinity -- seconds are a lifetime and minutes are an eternity. You usually encounter this phenomenon while sitting in a dentist chair, waiting out that last hour of work, and, on occasion, watching a terrible movie. The Brothers Solomon grinds down time in the same fashion. What feels like a three-hour descent into boredom is only a 90-minute test of might -- pitting you against unlikable characters, horribly written dialogue, and direction that's as painful as a root canal.

The Brothers Solomon is destined to become a movie you find yourself watching on late night cable. As with most "comedies," the laughs are the focus and not the simple plot -- in this case, two home-schooled, degenerate brothers try to find a woman to impregnate in an attempt to fulfill their father's dying wish of having a grandchild. After all, absurd plots make for hilarious scenes, right? No, and the two Wills (Arnett as John and Forte as Dean) suck the life right out of this film with the help of director Bob Odenkirk. You may remember Odenkirk from HBO's Mr. Show with Bob and David or that Seinfeld episode in which Elaine is dating a med student taking his exams and she helps him study in the hopes of dating a doctor. If you watch The Brothers Solomon with your eyes closed (and you are not asleep), you would swear that the stale dialogue spoken in a self-aware, "look at me, I'm saying something funny" tone was coming straight out of Odenkirk's mouth.

Beerfest Review

Good
Has there been one laugh-out-loud comedy, with the exception of Ricky Bobby, this summer? The excellent Little Miss Sunshine was more of a drama, though Abigail Breslin's pageant finale was hilarious. The Break-Up, with its force feeding of wacky characters, was terrible. Scoop felt too much like a compilation of Woody Allen's not-so greatest hits. Clerks II had its moments, but it lacked the spontaneity and rawness that made the first one so great. Poseidon was funny for all the wrong reasons.

Now enter Beerfest, the newest comedy from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. It's not nearly as funny as Super Troopers, but it's not nearly as atrocious as the laugh-empty Club Dread. In this dead season of laughs, that makes Beerfest almost a rousing success.
