Rapper Jay-Z and actor Will Smith are reportedly teaming up to produce a new miniseries for HBO telling the tragic story of Emmett Till, a 14 year old whose murder in 1955 is remembered as one of America’s most shocking hate crimes.

According to Deadline, Smith and Jay-Z will produce what is expected to be a six hour series, along with TV producer Aaron Kaplan. The project marks the first miniseries for Kaplan who is currently working on upcoming Sarah Jessica Parker comedy 'Divorce'.

The miniseries, which is as-yet-untitled has been described as “an immersive and in-depth exploration of the Emmett Till story”. There’s no word yet on when it will premiere on the network and the search for a writer is said to be currently underway.

This September will mark the 60th anniversary of Till’s murder which is considered a key moment in the early civil rights movement. The teenager’s shocking and violent death made headlines after his mother Mamie Till Mobley chose to have an open-casket funeral to expose the brutality the teen experienced before he was killed.

Till’s story has previously been the subject of a 2003 documentary, a PBS program and a 60 Minute feature. Smith and Jay-Z are no strangers to working together, having previously collaborated on the Broadway production of ‘Fela!’ The heavy-weight duo last worked together on the 2014 remake of musical Annie which starred Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx.
