Actor felt the role wasn't big enough for him

But for Will Smith’s ego, it could have been the Men In Black star who appeared as Quentin Tarantino’s Django in his Oscar-nominated film Django Unchained!
Smith himself doesn’t put it quite like that of course, though he did reveal that he turned down an approach to play the character eventually taken on by Jamie Foxx, because he didn’t feel that it was the lead role. Instead, Smith felt that Christoph Waltz’ part was the true lead, though it’s something that’s since been proven wrong – at least in the minds of the Oscar voters anyway, who gave Waltz the best supporting actor award last month, while the promotion for the film saw Foxxx pushed as the lead. “Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!" Smith revealed to Entertainment Weekly.
Continuing, Smith added “I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please,I need to kill the bad guy!’” However, Tarantino wasn’t having any of it and moved onto Foxx, who it has to be said was pretty brilliant in the role. Smith is a big fan of the film though, commenting “I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me.” Personally, we weren’t up for a repeat of the Wild Wild West, even with Tarantino at the helm, so we think it all worked out for the best.
