Woody Allen Responds To Ronan Farrow's Essay

Woody Allen Ronan Farrow

Following blistering allegations made by his estranged son Ronan Farrow about how the media doesn’t talk about sexual abuse accusations made against his father, Woody Allen has responded to what was said in the essay.

Journalist Farrow had written an op-ed in The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday (May 11th), moments before Allen’s press conference ahead of the opening of his new movie Café Society at Cannes Film Festival.

In that piece, Ronan questioned why the media wasn’t asking hard-hitting questions about the accusations his sister, Dylan Farrow, made against their estranged father dating back to the early ‘90s. Dylan repeated those allegations in an open letter in the New York Times blog in February 2014, but accused the media industry of silencing her by not effectively following it up.

Ronan Farrow Slams The Media For Ignoring Woody Allen Sex Abuse Scandal

Ronan Farrow Woody Allen

Well, this has been quite the awkward start to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. With Woody Allen's new film 'Cafe Society' opening the event and critics praising the movie, his adoptive son Ronan Farrow has used his father's spotlight to slam the media for not taking sexual abuse allegations made by daughter Dylan Farrow seriously.

Ronan FarrowRonan Farrow speaks out about woody Allen and the press

Indeed, the scandal has barely been mentioned over the past couple of weeks leading up to Cannes. Mostly because Allen is a very powerful man and no charges were ever brought against him. However, last week, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Allen in a piece that does mention the allegations, but only as a brief contextual sidenote. Ronan Farrow was not happy with the way the subject was treated, and the inaccurate way it was protrayed (THR said that accusations were 'dropped by police' before changing it to 'not pursued') and so he used the publication to later release an account of his own thoughts on how Allen is being treated in the media.

Woody Allen has recently unveiled his enchanting new comedy drama, Magic in the Moonlight, with an intriguing trailer and a promisingly star-studded cast. The filmmaker has spoken of his pride towards his latest venture but has also revealed that this was tinged with uneasiness surrounding the rather soporific surroundings. "This one's set in Nice in the 1920s. I have a great cameraman, terrific art director, but finding locations was hard. We had to travel around, do selective shooting to re-create primitive spots like in the old days," the director told the NY Post's Page Six.

In addition to giving the film his own offbeat performance, he surrounds himself with terrific actors.

"Not that I doubt Dylan hasn’t come to believe she’s been molested, but if from the age of 7 a vulnerable child is taught by a strong mother to hate her father because he is a monster who abused her, is it so inconceivable that after many years of this indoctrination the image of me Mia wanted to establish had taken root?"

''Blue Jasmine' showcases a brilliant, Oscar-worthy performance by Cate Blanchett as sort of a WASP version of Ruth Madoff', said the New York Post, while the Los Angeles Times praise Woody with: 'For all of 'Blue Jasmine's' darkness, the movie is among the filmmaker's most emotionally affecting.

It's Too Early To Call The Oscars. But Cate Blanchett. Blue Jasmine. Seriously.

Cate Blanchett Woody Allen Meryl Streep

Ok, so this happens every year. Every movie writer around - including yours truly - writes a story about Oscar buzz and whether or not an actor will score a golden statuette come February. It's happening again this year. Idris Elba could win Best Actor. The Monuments Men could win Best Picture. But Cate Blanchett could win Best Actress - she really could.

We're not afraid of using the word. So we're going to use it. There's serious 'buzz' around Woody Allen's new movie Blue Jasmine, particularly the Australian actress's performance as Ruth Madoff, a New York housewife struggling through a life crisis.

"In all, this is the strongest, most resonant movie Woody Allen has made in years," said David Denby of the New Yorker.

Blue Jasmine Trailer

Jasmine is an aristocratic New York housewife whose luxurious lifestyle and marriage to the wealthy Hal has been snatched away from her leaving her with quite literally nothing but the clothes on her back. She is forced to fly to San Francisco to move in with her sister Ginger whose apartment is well below her usual standards, as is her boyfriend Chili who is equally as resentful of Jasmine. It doesn't take long before Jasmine starts to plummet emotionally and mentally and only just manages to keep herself sane with several handfuls of anti-depressants a day. In a bid to get her life back on track, she takes a job as a dental receptionist while pursuing a career in interior design. Suffering from a serious breakdown, things are looking dark for Jasmine's future, but do things begin to look up when she meets the sophisticated Dwight?

Is Noah Baumbach's 'Frances Ha' The New 'Annie Hall'?

Greta Gerwig Noah Baumbach Ben Stiller Woody Allen

Frances Ha, the new movie starring Greta Gerwig as an apprentice dancer in New York, has been critically acclaimed ahead of its release this week. The movie, by Noah Baumbach (Squid And The Whale, Margot At The Wedding), follows a young woman named Frances who lives with her best friends Sophie, until she moves out to live with another pal.

Gerwig and Baumbach first collaborated in 2010's Greenberg, starring Ben Stiller, though decided to work together again and began exchanging ideas which ultimately became the co-written script for Frances Ha. The movie is shot in black-and-white to emulate parts in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979) and the movie is gaining comparisons to the director's most famous work, Annie Hall (1977). The film boasts a 92% score on reviews aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes (Star Trek Into Darkness 81%, Iron Man 78%) and critics have been unanimous in their praise. "An American independent film (shot in luminous black and white by Sam Levy) that feels off the cuff but is in fact exactly made by a filmmaker in total control of his resources," said Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal said, "Perhaps Ms. Gerwig is the greatest actress alive. And maybe "Frances Ha" is just the ghost orchid of independent cinema."

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Get Back Together For Christmas

Justin Bieber Selena Gomez Woody Allen Mia Farrow

Why did you ever doubt them? It seems as though Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are still going strong, despite reports of a recent breakup. Although the couple have had their problems in recent months, it looks as though everything is back to normal and the pair were snapped canoodling in Salt Lake City this week.

E! Online obtained photographs of Bieber and the Wizards of Waverly Place star kissing in the airport, with Gomez sitting on her boyfriend's lap and cuddling him. Aww. The pair have actually been spending plenty of time with each other lately, hopping on a jet together in Van Nuys, California, last Wednesday. The photographs will please fans of the A-list couple, especially considering Gomez was pictured getting close to Woody Allen and Mia Farrow's 25-year-old son Ronan Farrow last week. A Twitter picture uploaded by Ronan featured the caption, "Do not challenge the lovely @selenagomez to a dance-off. You will lose."

Bieber and Gomez called it quits in November, though tabloid reports concerning their makeups and breakups have been omnipresent through 2012.

To Rome With Love Review

Very Good
After Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen remains in a cheery European mode for another breezy comedy tinged with magical realism. This one's actually four separate stories that are very loosely interwoven as people struggle with the unpredictability of romance and fame. And like Midnight in Paris, it shows off Rome in the most beautiful light imaginable.

Baldwin plays an architect who returns to his student stomping grounds and meets Jack (Eisenberg), who seems to be living his old life, even as he falls for a friend (Page) of his girlfriend (Gerwig). Meanwhile, there's Leopoldo (Benigni), a dull businessman who suddenly becomes a celebrity for no reason he can see, is pursued everywhere by the paparazzi and starts to enjoy the high life. Across town, Jerry and Phyllis (Allen and Davis) arrive to meet the fiance (Parenti) of their daughter (Pill). Then Jerry pushes a future in-law (Armiliato) into becoming the latest opera sensation. Finally, a young couple arrives from the country to start a new life in the city, but the husband (Tiberi) ends up having a farcical day out with a sexy prostitute (Cruz) while the wife (Mastronardi) meets her favourite actor (Albanese).

To Rome With Love Trailer

Woody Allen takes us on a romp around yet another beautiful European city with his latest film To Rome With Love. Set in one of the most beautiful and romantic cites in the world (unsurprisingly) Rome, the film is broken down into four parts and the tale follows the escapades and relationships of holiday makers and local residents alike, each story individually unravels and gives us a glimpse into their -generally complicated & quirky- lives.

Midnight In Paris Review

Excellent
After a run of loose, uneven films, Allen hits the right notes in this funny, astute comedy about artistic creation and personal dreams. And Wilson turns out to be one of the best on-screen Allen surrogates in years.

Blocked writer Gil (Wilson) is visiting Paris with his wife Inez (McAdams) and her high-achieving parents (Fuller and Kennedy). When they run into Inez's know-it-all ex (Sheen), Gil starts having second thoughts about everything. He also begins to wish he'd lived in Paris in the artistic heyday of the 1920s, and is stunned one night to find himself in some kind of magical time-warp, rubbing shoulders with F Scott Fitzgerald (Hiddleston), Gertrude Stein (Bates) and Ernest Hemmingway (Stoll). He also begins to fall for Adriana (Cotillard), a muse for Picasso and Modigliani.

Carry On Joke Tops One-liner Poll

Monty Python Cameron Diaz Jim Carrey Pink Priscilla Presley Woody Allen

Kenneth Williams' famous quip "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got in for me!" has been named as the funniest line in movie history.

He uttered the words as Julius Caesar in the 1964 film Carry On Cleo.

Coming second in the poll for Sky Movies Comedy, which quizzed 1,000 film fans and critics, is the line "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" from the Monty Python film The Life of Brian.

And apparently the third funniest words uttered in a film are the exchange between Robert Hays (Ted Striker) and Leslie Nielsen (Dr Rumack) in the 1980 hit Airplane! After Hays said "Surely you can't be serious" Nielsen quipped back "I am seriousand don't call me Shirley".

Other films with one-liners making it into the poll's top ten are lines from the slapstick comedy films Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary and The Naked Gun.

Top ten comedy lines

1) "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar Carry on Cleo (1964)

2) "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy." Terry Jones as Brian's mother - Life Of Brian (1979)

3) "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." Leslie Nielsen as Dr Rumack - Airplane! (1980)

4) "Remember you're fighting for this woman's honour, which is probably more than she ever did." Groucho Marx as Rufus T Firefly - Duck Soup (1933)

5) "Don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love." Woody Allen as Alvy Singer - Annie Hall (1977)

6) "Do you have a licence for your minkey?" Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau - The Return of the Pink Panther (1975)

7) "Is that, is that hair gel?" Cameron Diaz as Mary Jensen - There's Something About Mary (1998)

8) "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room." Peter Sellers as President Merkin Muffley - Dr Strangelove (1963)

9) "Nice beaver! Thank you. I just had it stuffed." Leslie Nielsen as Lt Frank Drebin and Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer - The Naked Gun (1988)

10) "When I met Mary I got that old-fashioned romantic feeling where I'd do anything to bone her." Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas - Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Anything Else Review

Good
You can judge the current state of Woody Allen in the cinematic world by the fact that the advertising for his newest film, Anything Else, doesn't even mention his name. For all intents and purposes, it looks like a wee little romantic comedy starring Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci, the kind of thing that comes and goes from the multiplex in about three weeks and lives forever after on a Blockbuster shelf with Maid in Manhattan and Two Weeks Notice. On the poster, Ricci's face is in a big heart and the title is written in pink. It's a sneaky piece of subterfuge that might just allow Allen to do something he hasn't been able to for quite some time: connect with a younger audience.

The big schlemiel at the heart of the movie is actually not Allen, it's Biggs, who plays Jerry Falk, a young comedy writer with a chronic inability to say no to anybody: not his useless shrink or his clinging, laughable manager (Danny DeVito), and especially not his neurotic (on a good day) girlfriend, Amanda (Ricci). Falk's best friend is another comedy writer, David Dobel (Allen), who has all the usual Allen characteristics, but seems to have been taking steroids for his paranoia and misanthropy.

Hollywood Ending Review

Good

While it is getting harder and harder to indulge an aging Woody Allen's enduring fantasy of beautiful young women falling in love with him in his movies, the man's comedy instincts are as sharp as ever in "Hollywood Ending."

The sophisticated screwball jaunt stars Allen as washed-up movie director Val Waxman, whose hypochondria reaches new extremes when he's rescued from deodorant commercial hell by his producer ex-wife (Tea Leoni) and given one last shot by making a $60 million blockbuster. Panicked at the prospect of making or breaking his career -- not to mention working for his ex and the Hollywood greaseball she left him for -- Val goes psychosomatically blind.

Rather than quit the picture and doom himself to showbiz purgatory, he decides he just won't let on. He'll wing it and hope his cast and crew see his apparent ineptitude as visionary eccentricity.

The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion Review

OK

It's a very convincing 1940 in Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion," and impetuous Howard Hawkes-style love-hate sniping -- infused with the requisite Allen neuroticism -- is the foundation of this comedy about an insurance detective hot on the trail of the cagiest jewel thief he's ever encountered: Himself.

Allen stars as C.W. Briggs, his company's best (or is it just luckiest?) in-house dick for the last 30 years. You can tell C.W. thinks he's a pretty smooth cat because he walks with a saucy bounce in his step and chases young secretaries around the office. He's the guy who found a stolen Picasso rolled up in a telescope, after all. "And it wasn't easy," he boasts, "because I was supposed to be looking for a painting of a woman holding a guitar, but it was in all these little cubes!"

But C.W. is stuck in his ways, and these days he spends most of his energy butting heads like a stubborn billy goat with the company's new tough-as-nails efficiency expert, Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt). She thinks his department is obsolete and that the firm should hire out when it needs a detective.
