Woody Allen Responds To Ronan Farrow's Essay

Woody Allen Ronan Farrow

Following blistering allegations made by his estranged son Ronan Farrow about how the media doesn’t talk about sexual abuse accusations made against his father, Woody Allen has responded to what was said in the essay.

Journalist Farrow had written an op-ed in The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday (May 11th), moments before Allen’s press conference ahead of the opening of his new movie Café Society at Cannes Film Festival.

In that piece, Ronan questioned why the media wasn’t asking hard-hitting questions about the accusations his sister, Dylan Farrow, made against their estranged father dating back to the early ‘90s. Dylan repeated those allegations in an open letter in the New York Times blog in February 2014, but accused the media industry of silencing her by not effectively following it up.

Ronan Farrow Slams The Media For Ignoring Woody Allen Sex Abuse Scandal

Ronan Farrow Woody Allen

Well, this has been quite the awkward start to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. With Woody Allen's new film 'Cafe Society' opening the event and critics praising the movie, his adoptive son Ronan Farrow has used his father's spotlight to slam the media for not taking sexual abuse allegations made by daughter Dylan Farrow seriously.

Ronan FarrowRonan Farrow speaks out about woody Allen and the press

Indeed, the scandal has barely been mentioned over the past couple of weeks leading up to Cannes. Mostly because Allen is a very powerful man and no charges were ever brought against him. However, last week, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Allen in a piece that does mention the allegations, but only as a brief contextual sidenote. Ronan Farrow was not happy with the way the subject was treated, and the inaccurate way it was protrayed (THR said that accusations were 'dropped by police' before changing it to 'not pursued') and so he used the publication to later release an account of his own thoughts on how Allen is being treated in the media.

Woody Allen has recently unveiled his enchanting new comedy drama, Magic in the Moonlight, with an intriguing trailer and a promisingly star-studded cast. The filmmaker has spoken of his pride towards his latest venture but has also revealed that this was tinged with uneasiness surrounding the rather soporific surroundings. "This one's set in Nice in the 1920s. I have a great cameraman, terrific art director, but finding locations was hard. We had to travel around, do selective shooting to re-create primitive spots like in the old days," the director told the NY Post's Page Six.

In India, on selected scenes that are deemed suitable, a banner is shown warning against the dangers of smoking.

Forget Sinatra, Ronan Farrow Is The Brains Of The Family

Mia Farrow Ronan Farrow Woody Allen Frank Sinatra

Ronan Farrow may well be Woody Allen's biological son, then again, he could be Frank Sinatra's. In a Vanity Fair interview that probably didn't do Ronan any favors this week, his mother Mia Farrow made the case for old blue eyes being the daddy.

Ronan hasn't seen Woody for years and his likeness to Sinatra is striking, however, it's not wise to use the 25-year-old as the subject of gossip, speculation and celebrity tittle-tattle. This guy is arguably the smartest guy in the family - whether that includes Woody, or Frank - and he's got a big future.

Ronan has been a determined human rights activist since graduating from Bard College at the ripe old age of 15. "I grew up with altruism on display in a pretty intense way," he told Forbes, referring to his 10 adopted siblings, some of whom suffer from severe disability.

Dylan, Mia Farrow's Daughter, On Alleged Woody Allen Abuse: "What Happened In The Attic I Remember"

Woody Allen

After years of silence, Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter – Dylan, who has adopted different names in the past – has opened up about the abuse she alleges filmmaker Woody Allen inflicted on her. A seven-year-old Dylan, in 1992, told her mother that Allen touched her inappropriately. Farrow videotaped her confession, but the court case was dropped so that Dylan wouldn’t, at such a young age, have to testify in court.

20 years on, she’s opened up to Vanity Fair with her version of events.

“I’m scared of him, his image,” she explained. “I have never been asked to testify. If I could talk to the 7-year-old Dylan, I would tell her to be brave, to testify,” she added. Since the case was dropped, Allen’s career continued to flourish. He is known as one of the finest filmmakers of his generation.

Mia Farrow & Woody Allen's Son, Ronan Farrow, In Talks To Host MSNBC Show

Mia Farrow Woody Allen Alec Baldwin

Ronan Farrow, the only biological child of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, looks like he may be joining MSNBC's weekend line-up with his very own show. Farrow, a journalist and human rights activist, is said to be in advanced talks with the usually-liberal network over a show in which he will address various human rights concerns and other political concerns. He probably won't be discussing the week's hottest gossip though, like whether his father might actually be Frank Sinatra.

Initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the show will be Farrow's first real leap into television, although he has appeared on MSNBC and CNN's programs in the past. The 25-year-old isn't being handed the job just because of his famous name either, as Ronan has a rich history of journalistic duties and charitable work behind him. Most recently, Farrow has worked for President Obama's foreign policy department as well as at the State Department, where he founded the Office of Global Youth Issues. He also served as an advisor to Hilary Clinton during the Arab Spring uprising.

Much like his mother, Ronan has long been a staunch campaigner for the protection of children caught in conflict, and despite his young age, has developed an impressive resume of charitable pursuits and work within various non-governmental organisations, in addition to his work with Obama and Clinton. He has addressed the ongoing AIDs pandemic in Africa and the genocide in Darfur and is a published journalist, writing on the subject of human rights for The Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune and The Atlantic.

Mia Farrow Reveals Biological Shock Hinting Her Son's Father Could Be Frank Sinatra And Not Woody Allen?!

Mia Farrow Woody Allen

Mia Farrow made the huge revelation that her son, Ronan Farrow, may be the biological son to Frank Sinatra and not Hollywood film director Woody Allen.

Mia was married to the legendary singer from 1966 to 1968 and in a recent interview with Vanity Fair she admitted Sinatra and herself "never really split up" as he was the love of her life.

The interviewer then asked if Ronan, her son, could be Frank's son and she replied "possibly".

Woody Allen On Cate Blanchett, The Woman Who Put The Jasmine In 'Blue Jasmine'

Woody Allen Cate Blanchett

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine is being hailed as his best film in two decades by some, his best film ever by others. At its marrow, the film is a character drama about loss and decisions. And, talking to The Guardian, the legendary film make has talked about Cate Blanchett’s character: Jasmine.

Blue Jasmine
Jasmine starts hanging around with a new crowd -namely these guys.

"Ninety-nine per cent of decisions are predicated on feelings – instinctive, emotional, fears, conflicts, unresolved childhood problems. They're our dominant motivating factor, not reason or rationality or common sense. And that's why the world is in a terrible, terrible state,” said Allen.

Blue Jasmine Review

Extraordinary

With a riveting performance, Cate Blanchett creates one of Woody Allen's most memorable movie characters in years. And it's also the writer-director's strongest film in recent memory, as it balances comedy and drama in an engaging story that has a kick of resonance as it explores fall-out from the current economical recession.

Blanchett is Jasmine, a New York socialite who has fallen from grace after her husband Hal (Baldwin) lost control of his dodgy financial empire. So Jasmine is forced to move across the country to live with her sister Ginger (Hawkins) in San Francisco. Although she misses her high-society lifestyle, Jasmine gets on with things, finding a job with a local dentist (Stuhlbarg) and a flicker of romance with a rising-star politician (Sarsgaard). But living in Ginger's small apartment with her two kids and her blue-collar boyfriend Chili (Cannavale) takes its toll. And while smoothing the edges with alcohol and Xanax, Jasmine begins to lie to herself and others about her past.

All of the characters here are jaggedly complex, interacting with hilariously observant dialog as their relationships get increasingly messy. But while Jasmine is snobby and prickly, Blanchett also reveals her fragility as she tries to get back on her feet. And Hawkins is just as revelatory as the tenacious and much more generous Ginger. The men around them are just as complicated: Cannavale is hot-tempered but charming, Sarsgaard is kind but a bit slippery, Baldwin is charismatic and over-confident. No one fits into a simple box, which keeps us on our toes and lets the characters worm their way deep under the skin.

Cate Blanchett To Helm Herman Koch Adaption In Directorial Debut

Cate Blanchett Woody Allen

Cate Blanchett has decided to make the leap from screen star to scene setter, and has been handed her first script to kick star her career as a budding director. As initially reported by Deadline, the actress will make her directorial debut with the adaptation of Herman Koch's The Dinner, the Dutch writer's 2009 best-selling crime thriller.

Cate Blanchett
The Oscar-winner is making the move from actress to director

Oren Moverman (The Messenger) is in charge of writing the screenplay for the film, and Cotty Chubb is producing, with Eva Maria Daniels and Olga Segura serving as executive producers. The story itself covers the kidnapping of a child, and the lengths that a parent will go to in order to get their child back (much like the recently released Prisoners). With the script still in development, there has apparently been no advancements in finding a cast, which could mean Blanchett may be in talks to make an appearance in the film herself.

Cate Blanchett Will Debut As Film Director In Herman Koch's Epic 'The Dinner'

Cate Blanchett Woody Allen Peter Jackson George Clooney Kenneth Branagh

Cate Blanchett might've put on a jaw-dropping performance in her most recent film Blue Jasmine, but she's about to display a new talent as a budding film director in the upcoming adaptation of The Dinner.

Perhaps working with such iconic directors as Woody Allen (Blue Jasmine), Peter Jackson (The Hobbit), George Clooney (The Monuments Men, due out 2014) and Kenneth Branagh - who she is currently filming the new adaptation of Cinderella with - has inspired her to branch out in her film career as she finally takes on the tricky role new in a new film based on the novel by Herman Koch.

It's a suspenseful thriller about two couples who are trying to make a drastic decision about their teenage sons who have been involved in a horrific situation that's now in the hands of the police. There is little action and one setting, but that will only make it harder to infuse each second with nail-biting tension and heart-stopping dread when it is put to film.

Mark Wahlberg's '2 Guns' Shoots Up 'Wolverine' At The Box-Office

Mark Wahlberg Denzel Washington Hugh Jackman Shailene Woodley Woody Allen Lindsay Lohan

The Mark Wahlberg vehicle 2 Guns - co-starring Denzel Washington - topped the US box office over the weekend with estimated takings of $24.4 million. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the movie sees both actors teaming up as cops battling drug traffickers.

It toppled the strong performing The Wolverine, Marvel's latest blockbuster starring Hugh Jackman which was knocked back to second with $21.7 million. The Smurfs 2 appeared to suffer from a plethora of awful reviews and took just $18.2 million, according to the reliable guys over at Hollywood.com.

The animated sequel failed to meet expectations in the US, though earned $52.5 million from 43 markets.

'2 Guns' Shoots Straight To No. 1 In Box Office After Strong Opening Weekend

Mark Wahlberg Denzel Washington Hugh Jackman Lindsay Lohan Woody Allen

The battle for the number one spot at the box office wasn't quite so one sided as it was last week, but like last week, our number one this time around was a clear victor, with 2 Guns beating it's nearest competitor by some distance. With The Wolverine dominating cinemas last weekend, it was time for Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington to take their share of the box office takings, with Hugh Jackman's latest turn as Logan falling short of the top spot in it's second week.

Watch the trailer for 2 Guns

2 Guns managed to bring in a cool $27.4 million over the weekend, a paltry sum by some weekend standards, but enough to make it to the top of the film charts at least and an amount that will be reassuring to the movie's producers. Meanwhile, The Wolverine led an impressive second week charge to remain in the top two despite the two big name releases coming this week in the shape of 2 Guns and Smurfs 2. With overall weekend takings of $21.7 mil., the superhero film has managed to draw in almost $100 million in the domestic market alone, whilst it continues to perform well overseas, with the overall foreign total now standing at $160.2 mill.

Woody Allen Shines The Spotlight On A Fragile Cate Blanchett In "Blue Jasmine"

Woody Allen Cate Blanchett

Woody Allen – the name alone evokes a special kind of respect most of us reserve for filmmakers we know are good, but never actually sit down to watch. But that shouldn’t be the case with Blue Jasmine. The latest Allen flick had the biggest limited release of 2013 last weekend and with good reason.

Watch the Blue Jasmine trailer below

Reviewers have commented that the biggest gem in this film is Kate Blanchett – playing a glamorous, but neurotic and increasingly distraught Jasmine – a modern day, alcohol and glamour-addicted version of Tennessee Williams’ Blanche. Blanchett fans out there will recall that the actress has experience with this type of heroine, having played Blanche herself in a 2009 production of Streetcar.

Zach Braff To Star In Woody Allen's 'Bullets Over Broadway'

Zach Braff Woody Allen John Cusack Vincent Pastore

Zach Braff has been cast in a Broadway adaptation of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway. Set in the 1920's, an apparently fashionable time if popular culture's current obsession with The Great Gatsby and the most recent series of Downton Abbey is anything to go by, the plot centres around a struggling playwright's dealing with the mob.

The 1994 film of Bullets Over Broadway saw struggling playwright David (played by John Cusack) forced to choose a talentless actress to star in his play. The actress is the girlfriend of a mobster who has offered, in exchange for her opportunity to tread the boards, to finance David's play.

British Star Colin Firth Lined Up For New Woody Allen Movie

Colin Firth Woody Allen Emma Stone

Following the news that Emma Stone is lined up to star in a Woody Allen movie, Deadline have announced that British actor Colin Firth is also in the running to star in the film. As yet untitled, the movie is expected to be shot in the south of France. Woody’s keeping the plot firmly under wraps though it seems that he is working towards putting together a typically stellar cast.

Allen, a prolific, iconic and highly respected director, just finished working on his 44th movie as a director. Entitled Blue Jasmine, the film was set in New York and Los Angeles and stars Alec Baldwin, as well as Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins and Louis CK. The movie is scheduled to open in September 2013. Colin Firth is currently lined up to star in The Secret Service – the next movie from X:Men First Class’s Matthew Vaughn. However, he’s thought to be making room in his schedule to ensure that he lands a slot in Woody Allen’s latest movie.

For Emma Stone, a role in a Woody Allen will be an important move. Allen is known for creating movies that – whilst popular, both critically and with audiences – have a certain art-house appeal and to appear in a Woody Allen movie is a mark of progress and industry respect for many actors.

Amazing Spider-Man Star Emma Stone Lands Woody Allen Role

Emma Stone Woody Allen

Emma Stone has turned to famed director Woody Allen for her next major movie role. Having already earned her stripes in the blockbuster scene, with movies like The Amazing Spider-Man (and of course its sequel) and Gangster Squad to her name, Stone has opted for something a little artier, The Guardian reports, as she’s signed up for Allen’s next movie project. As yet, it remains untitled, though it is expected that he will return to France to shoot this movie, following the success of Midnight In Paris.

Allen is currently preparing his latest movie venture Blue Jasmine for release in July. Starring Cate Blanchett, the story is described by Sony Pictures Classics as “the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of fashionable New York housewife.” So far, there’s no word on who will be joining Emma Stone on screen for Woody Allen’s forthcoming venture though it’s likely that she’ll be in good company, given Allen’s propensity for securing big-name talent for his relatively small-scale ensemble movies. Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson and Evan Rachel Wood have all graced the screen for Allen in recent years.

Stone is currently busy filming for two projects, the Spider-Man sequel and Birdman, a comedy from Alejandro González Iñárritu. She’s also scheduled to appear in Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak and an untitled rom-com from Cameron Crowe.

Prolific TV Writer Mickey Rose Dies Ages 77

Woody Allen

Mickey Rose – the childhood friend of Woody Allen, who went on to work with him on comedies "Bananas" and "Take the Money and Run" – has died aged 77. It has been reported the cause was cancer.

Although Rose was handed a fairly heft leg-up by his legendary friend, he carved out a successful career writing jokes and sketched for Johnny Carson, Sid Caesar and other top comedians/shows of his generation. Allen's biographer Eric Lax said of the pair: "They were just very good friends with similar sensibilities, who laughed at the same things and loved to make each other laugh.” Rose really peaked in the 70s, writing for ‘The Smothers Brothers,’ ‘All in the Family,’ ‘The Odd Couple’ and ‘The Tonight Show.’ "Mickey was one of the funniest humans I know, a true original and a total eccentric and a wonderful first baseman," Allen said in a statement his biographer released this week. "We played a lot of baseball together. Once, when I asked him what death meant to him he said, 'no more malteds.' The 80’s saw the writing dry up for Rose, who, according to his son, was lacking opportunities.

He stayed in touch with Allen – who introduced him to his late wife via a blind date – over the years. "There was outright laughter sometimes as we worked," Rose said of the process of working with Allen, according to Lax's 1991 biography of the film maker.

Baldwin Family Grows: Alec Baldwin And Hilaria Expecting First Child Together

Alec Baldwin Hilaria Baldwin Woody Allen Cate Blanchett Peter Sarsgaard

Alec Baldwin and his new wife Hilaria Thomas Baldwin are expecting their first child together. A representative confirmed the news to Reuters on Tuesday (February 12, 2013), with Baldwin later telling television program Extra, "If I really shared with you how I felt, I would probably burst out crying."

Baldwin, 54, married yoga teacher Hiliaria, 28, in a ceremony in New York in July 2012. "It was a surprise, a wonderful surprise," said his wife, who also works as a correspondent for the entertainment TV show. "Now I'm showing and it's getting to be much more, like, 'Oh, my God, this is actually going to happen." Although one of the most recognizable stars in Hollywood, Baldwin is best known for playing egotistical television executive Jack Donaghy on the NBC comedy 30 Rock, which broadcast its final episode in January. He was previously married to the L.A. Confidential actress Kim Basinger from 1993-2003. The couple have one daughter together, Ireland, who was born in 1995.

Following on from To Rome With Love, Baldwin has just completed work on Blue Jasmine, his second movie with Woody Allen. Though plot details are sketchy, the film also stars Cate Blanchett and Peter Sarsgaard and is set to hit cinemas in July.

Scarlett Johansson Returns To Broadway In ‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’

Scarlett Johansson Tennessee Williams Arthur Miller Ciaran Hinds Debra Monk Woody Allen

Scarlett Johansson will grace Broadway once more, as she plays Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, reports The New York Daily News.

Tennessee Williams’ award winning play, which has won the Pulitzer Prize, and has been revived several times on Broadway already, will set the scene for Johansson’s return to the stage; her first since her Tony-winning performance in a 2010 revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. Benjamin Walker will join her on stage. The actors will play Maggie and Brick in a new production that is expected to open Jan. 17 at New York's Richard Rodgers Theatre. Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) will play Brick’s plantation-owner father, Big Daddy. Tony winner Debra Monk will play Big Mama.

The show’s lead producer will be Stuart Thompson, and Johansson, who worked with him on “View From the Bridge,” has wanted to play Maggie for some time, and her box office star power proved strong enough for the Broadway producers to bring back a play that is already familiar to many theatre-goers. It’s hard to pigeonhole Johansson as an actress, given the range of roles she’s fulfilled. More art-house performances, notably with Woody Allen, include; Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but she has also featured in many Hollywood blockbusters, like Iron Man 2 or The Avengers.

The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion Review

OK

It's a very convincing 1940 in Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion," and impetuous Howard Hawkes-style love-hate sniping -- infused with the requisite Allen neuroticism -- is the foundation of this comedy about an insurance detective hot on the trail of the cagiest jewel thief he's ever encountered: Himself.

Allen stars as C.W. Briggs, his company's best (or is it just luckiest?) in-house dick for the last 30 years. You can tell C.W. thinks he's a pretty smooth cat because he walks with a saucy bounce in his step and chases young secretaries around the office. He's the guy who found a stolen Picasso rolled up in a telescope, after all. "And it wasn't easy," he boasts, "because I was supposed to be looking for a painting of a woman holding a guitar, but it was in all these little cubes!"

But C.W. is stuck in his ways, and these days he spends most of his energy butting heads like a stubborn billy goat with the company's new tough-as-nails efficiency expert, Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt). She thinks his department is obsolete and that the firm should hire out when it needs a detective.
