Xiu Xiu - Plays the Music of Twin Peaks Album Review
Xiu Xiu are one of the most consistently bizarre bands out there, so it makes only perfect sense that they've recorded their own version of the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It seems terrifyingly bizarre to think about, which is why I had to get my hands on it.
In many ways Xiu Xiu and David Lynch are comparable artists, both considered 'difficult' and 'obscure' by many, but have their die-hard fans who stick with them no matter where their experimentation may take them. While Lynch though has slowly evolved into a recognised master, Xiu Xiu have largely eschewed this and remain cult darlings.
Twin Peaks was Lynch's most notable foray into the mainstream of 90s TV and was, at least for a while, hugely popular, not least for its music. The score by Angelo Badalamenti is a mixture of haunting ambient instrumentals and warming heartfelt Jazz, which transports you right into the action of the show. Xiu Xiu are often at risk of alienating even the most seasoned of listeners, but with Plays the music of Twin Peaks they've made one of their most beautiful and cathartic records in years.
