The Nina Simone Estate Lash Out Over Zoe Saldana's 'Blackface'

Nina Simone Zoe Saldana

If there's one thing that never needs to rear its head in Hollywood again, it's blackface. But it seems that no-one told the crew of the new Nina Simone biopic 'Nina', because that's reportedly what they've employed for the lighter skinned leading lady Zoe Saldana.

Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana divides opinion over 'Nina' casting

The first poster of the new movie clearly shows the half-Dominican half-Puerto Rican actress with a much darker skintone than usual, not to mention a prosthetic nose, for her role as African-American jazz singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone. And while Saldana may well have been the best casting choice as an actress, the estate of Simone have lashed out at her appearance being, well, all wrong.

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana has revealed that her soccer player-turned-artist husband, Marco Perego, took her name when they married in 2013, which makes him Marco Saldana now. Furthermore, she has defended his decision to do so and hopes that it will re-define masculinity.

The Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star told the July edition of InStyle magazine that she was initially afraid her husband would feel “emasculated” given the Latin culture in which he was raised.

Uneventful Box Office Maintains Summer Momentum

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone Wesley Snipes Jet Li Jeff Bridges

Not much to report from the box office after this week – despite all its manpower, Expendables 3 just couldn’t outgun previous chart toppers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy and ended up fourth in a line of new releases and return champions. The Turtles continued their reign with a respectable $28,4 million on their second outing according to Rentrak (via The Huffington Post).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Check out the guns on that turtle.

Guardians trailed only slightly behind with $24,7 million. In a slight disappointment for Marvel, the superhero space opera lost its lead in just the second week to the CGI-heavy TMNT flick. Even so, on its third week, GotG has reached an impressive cume of $222 million for distributor Walt Disney. Coupled with TMNT’s earnings this should enough to restore some faith in the 2014 summer box office from studios. For comparison, August so far marks a 14% increase in profits since last year, which of course concerns the average moviegoer roughly 0%.

"Guardians" May Have Saved The Galaxy, But They Can't Hold On To The Box Office

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Megan Fox Helen Mirren

So here’s some news: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just breezed past Guardians of the Galaxy to the top of the box office. Yes, you can go back and read that again. The new addition to the TMNT franchise has taken a Turtle-worthy beating in reviews over the past week, but that didn’t stop it from beating the critically and fan-acclaimed Guardians, after the Marvel flick has spent just one week on top.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Why though?

The new and improved (well, new anyway) Turtles raked in $65 million on its first weekend, while Guardians checked in at just $41,5. Unfortunately, this doesn’t even top the market analysts’ predictions for TMNT, which largely underestimated the potential of grown-up Ninja Turtles fans, predicting a slow start with around $45 million. According to USA Today says that 55% of moviegoers were 25 or older, a surprisingly mature demographic. Not so surprisingly, 61% of the audience was male, Paramount says. 'The film obviously had greater-than-expected appeal to nostalgic parents," says Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian. At this point, we won’t add the obligatory “No ----, Sherlock” comment, but feel free to do it in your mind.

The Reviews Are In: NBC's "Rosemary's Baby" Doesn't Quite Measure Up To The Original

Zoe Saldana Jason Isaacs

What’s not to like about Rosemary’s Baby? Horror? Check. Classic? Check. Zoe Saldana, Jason Isaacs, Patrick J. Adams? Check, check, check. The new miniseries reboot has a lot going for it, but the critics seem to want more from a TV adaptation with such great credits.

Zoe Saldana
Despite Saldana and Co's best efforts, the adaptation just doesn't deliver the chills.

According to the New York Daily News’ David Hinkley, extending the two-hour film into a four episode mini-series serves to dilute the tension, instead of extending it. “Despite the efforts of a good cast, inflating “Rosemary’s Baby” into a miniseries doesn’t give the classic 1968 movie the kind of fresh life its producers no doubt envisioned,” Hinkley writes. Nevertheless, according to him, the miniseries might be good enough for audiences, who never got to see the 1968 original.

The First Teaser Trailer Has Been Released For Upcoming Marvel Action Movie, 'Guardians Of The Galaxy.'

There has been a great deal of chatter on the internet regarding the potential success of Guardians of the Galaxy and whether it'll be Marvel's first flop movie. The concern partly stems from the notion that an entirely new host of characters are being introduced all at once without any precursors in other movies. Some say that GOTG will not do as well as Marvel's most successful film, The Avengers, because the characters have not had the individual movie back-stories like the Avengers did.

'Out Of The Furnace' Is Tough Watch, But Worth The Effort - Reviews Roundup

Christian Bale Casey Affleck Zoe Saldana Woody Harrelson Scott Cooper

Out of the Furnace, a story of working class turmoil and frustration, has critics singing its praises so far. That’s not unexpected – starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck, the movie boasts plenty of talent. Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Defoe, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard all give their best in Out of the Furnace, which tells the story of Russell Baze (Christian Bale) taking justice into his own hands after the disappearance of his younger brother Rodney (Affleck). It’s set to the background of economic decline and social struggle, making this a film about the dark, often ignored side of the American dream.

Christian Bale, Out of the Furnace
Bale's steady and nuanced performance has impressed the critics.

The LA Times’ Betsey Shakey is impressed both with the “lean script,” which “gives a face to the all too familiar struggle” as well as the strong performances of the all-star cast. “Bale and Affleck are as nuanced as Harrelson is unhinged,” the review notes “It is among the finest work done by all three.”

Christian Bale Casey Affleck Woody Harrelson Zoe Saldana

Christian Bale doesn’t stop for long; before he’d announced his decision to step down as Gotham City’s savior, the actor was working his way towards another type of hero. This time, he’s a working class hero without a fancy costume as Russell Baze – a steel worker forced to go in search for his ex-soldier brother who falls in with a criminal gang, headed by Curtis DeGoat (Woody Harrelson).

An incredible cast of Academy Awards winners and nominees sees Bale and Harrelson joined by Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. It’s good to see Bale back in a more human role, despite his best efforts to attribute that aspect to Batman in the popular Dark Knight trilogy.

Glenn Close To Play Top Cop In Marvel's 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Glenn Close James Gunn Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Lee Pace Michael Rooker John C Reilly Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joel Edgerton Jack Huston Jim Sturgess Eddie Redmayne Samuel L Jackson Anton Yelchin Frank Langella

Well this is a surprising casting, though one that sort of makes a ton of sense. According to the Deadline.com, Marvel Studios has landed Oscar winning actress Glenn Close to play a major new role in its latest franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy. The actress will reportedly play a leadership role in Nova Corp, the intergalactic space control.

The new James Gunn-directed movie goes into production next month, so Marvel have left it late to cast what is essentially a major role. The movie already boasts a pretty decent looking cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker and John C. Reilly. Pratt landed the lead role following a search that included Marvel looking at Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess and Eddie Redmayne

Sources tell Deadline that Close's role will be the closest thing to the one that Samuel L. Jackson plays in The Avengers, though perhaps with more of an edge. Close has proven she can play the hardnosed character in the likes of Damages, Fatal Attraction and, err, 101 Dalmatians and we see her being a real hit in Guardians.

"It's Who I Am" - Zoe Saldana On Her Weight (115 Pounds), Body And Sexuality

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana bore all for Allure magazine recently – her body, her weight, her fluid take on sexuality and more. The spread in Allure definitely shows off the Star Trek Into Darkness actress’s thin frame, but she has even attached a number to her figure: “115 pounds of grit and heartache,” as the cover boldly proclaims. After the magazine hit the stands, Saldana talked to Savannah Guthrie on the Today show about the choice to reveal her weight: "I think it would have been wrong if they were lying about my weight. This is how much I weigh. It's something I can't control. It's who am. I've always been of a very thin frame. I was a ballet dancer. So they wanted to do that. I don't think it was to make an issue of my weight. I think it was to talk about that for a lightweight person I seem to be really strong minded."

It’s hard to see the correlation (or lack thereof) between the actress’s weight and her will or see how the number is relevant anyway. But if the title doesn’t get you to read it, the contents of the article are definitely more interesting – and we’re not even talking about the almost nude photoshoot. Saldana exposed herself in more ways than one during the Allure interview, as she also talked about her romantic preferences: “[I might] end up with a woman raising my children,” she confessed to the magazine. “That’s how androgynous I am.”

The actress later clarified her answer to Guthrie and Today viewers: "As of now I've been attracted to the male species. I don't know if that will continue but if one day I wake up and feel differently about who I find attractive I wil do that and I will be supported and loved by those that support and love me."

Zoe Saldana Dons Futuristic Looking Dress For "Star Trek Into Darkness" Premiere

Zoe Saldana Chris Pine Benedict Cumberbatch

The crew of Enterprise all looked flawless last night on the red carpet of the Star Trek Into Darkness premiere. Zoe Saldana, who reprised her role as Nyota Uhura from J J Abrams’s 2009 film, graced the premiere in a futuristic looking black and white gown. Unfortunately, the breezy fabric meant she had a couple of brushes with a potential wardrobe malfunction, but at least she looked fabulous throughout. Her co-stars, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto got decked out in classic ensembles in grey and blue. Newcomer to the series Alice Eve, on the other hand, decided to go with a strapless suede Ermano Servino number and she did not go wrong, looking perfectly polished throughout the night.

Zoe Saldana, Star Trek Premiere
The actress looked radiant as she posed for pictures on the night of the premiere.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the second film in the series, reimagined by JJ Abrams and it is set to hit theatres May 9th. It follows the exploits of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew, as they on a mission to halt an unstoppable force of terror from within Starfleet- said force is being played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming film. So while all we have to at this point are photos from the premiere, there is certainly a lot to look forward to in this film. Be excited. Be very excited. And maybe check out the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer below.

“I Wanted Her To Kick A**” – Zoe Saldana On Her Stark Trek Into Darkness Role

Zoe Saldana

If you’re not a Star Trek fan, you might be wondering what the hell it is that keeps those that are going back to the franchise, obsessively, time after time. Well, we reckon that Zoe Saldana might just have something to do with it. Zoe plays the role of Uhura, who is placed in a bit of a dilemma in the latest movie, Star Trek Into Darkness. “Do I have what it takes to sacrifice my life, for my ship,” is how Saldana describes that dilemma, in an interview with Perez Hilton.

Zoe describes the changes in the characters between the 2009 Star Trek movie and JJ Abrams’ latest venture into space. “You’re seeing the shift of kids to adults,” she explains “and taking on bigger responsibilities and accepting the path they each have chosen.” In the interview, she goes to on to reveal her approach to the character. “I wanted her to kick ass,” she says, plainly and simply. “I just wanted her to be a little more physical… I had such a wonderful time working with JJ and the cast and the crew.

So far, the reviews for the new Star Trek movie are looking promising. With a solid 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, it might not be anything ground-breaking from Abrams, but with Saldana on board, there’s enough to keep everyone happy right?

Zoe Saldana In Talks For Marvel Film 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana could well be on the way to snagging herself a role in a major Marvel Studios film, with the actress reportedly in talks with the comic giants over the female lead in their forthcoming movie Guardians Of The Galaxy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saldana would play Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. Thankfully, she also happens to be a skilled assassin, so she’s likely to have a handy chance against the Badoon. Well of course she would, otherwise she wouldn’t be the sole survivor of her race. Chris Pratt has already been confirmed as the Star-Lord, with Dave Bautista also on board to portray Drax The Destroyer. The role is a typical all-action one for Bautista, who made his name as a professional wrestler in the WWE, wrestling under the name Batista and ascending to the very heights of the business.

According to the same report, the superhero group also includes Groot, a giant tree-man, and Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives. Bet they have plenty to talk about at parties at any rate. James Gunn is directing the movie, which will likely being production in June, with a release date set by Disney for Aug. 1, 2014.

Bradley Cooper Is A Single Man After He And Zoe Saldana Part Ways

Bradley Cooper Zoe Saldana

For the second time, Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana have decided to call it quits. And this time, it looks like The Hangover actor and the Avatar Star might be ending it permanently.

According to The Sun, the split is down to Cooper's schedule; he has to travel around the world promoting his new film, Silver Linings Playbook, and that's interfered with the couples plans. "Zoe had planned to spend the holidays with Bradley and his family in Europe," a source explained. "They all were going to Paris, but things didn't work out between them." Bradley - who was crowned People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 2011 - first dated Avatar actress Zoe at the beginning of 2012 when they filmed The Words together. Their first stint only latest 3 months, before they broke up, with Zoe's camp explaining it wasn't that serious. Subsequent relationships with Hollywood stars such as Scarlett Johansson ensued for Cooper, but the pair were reunited in September. And this time, it lasted 4 months before they broke it off.

It appears as though Saldana isn't too upset about the split, as she was seen living it up for New Years Eve in Miami, partying at The James Royal Palm hotel in South Beach in a green leather dress.

As the year winds down, critics are making lists and checking them twice to decide which filmmakers have been naughty or nice. Top 10s are appearing everywhere, along with awards and nominations and even some worst of the year lists. And most film fans are anxiously awaiting the emergence of a front-runner in the Oscar race.

So far the love has been spread around between year-end releases like Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and Ang Lee's Life of Pi, all of which earned key nominations from the Golden Globes last week and the London Critics' Circle Film Awards this week. Perhaps not quite so awards-worthy is the new Tom Cruise action romp Jack Reacher, which opens on Christmas.

Avatar Review

Extraordinary
After a 12-year-break, Cameron returns to feature filmmaking with a mind-bending epic that's both visually spectacular and emotionally involving.

And the fact that it's in gorgeously rendered 3D is icing on the cake.

In the year 2154, paraplegic Marine Jake (Worthington) is transported to the planet Pandora to join the avatar project. Soon he's in the middle of hostile territory in the genetically cloned body of the Na'vi: three metres tall with blue skin, a tail and a very sensitive ponytail. In the jungle, Jake befriends Neytiri (Saldana), who trains him in the ways of the Na'vi. But this puts him at odds with his employers, who want him to help move the Na'vi so they can plunder the land for a rare mineral.

Star Trek (2009) Review

Excellent
With one film, J.J. Abrams has made Star Trek younger, flashier, sexier, funnier, and less intelligent, but more exhilarating than it has been in decades. By altering the franchise's storied past, he ignites a fevered barn-burner that's geared toward today's action junkies but also sets the stage for what could be a long and prosperous future.

Abrams' stylized reboot isn't the finest film in the 10-picture series, which dates back to 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. That distinction still belongs to the second Trek feature, The Wrath of Khan, though Abrams and co-screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wisely allow that film to influence most of their creative decisions.

Haven Review

Weak
The island of Grand Cayman is truly breathtaking, and the new drama Haven wastes no time in showing off the tucked-away coves of white, sandy beaches and crystal blue waters of its setting. It's too bad that it doesn't stick to pining after the picturesque, and instead goes for a lackluster and muddled portrayal of island social strife and petty melodramas.

Haven is told using the intersecting tales of numerous characters that is so popular with the ambitious, film school-groomed set who have seen Rashomon a few too many times. In one narrative strain, there's the jovial American businessman (Bill Paxton) who wants to give up his shady practices and go straight; his pretty princess daughter Pippa (Agnes Bruckner), still fresh from her 18th birthday; his foul-mouthed attorney, Allen (Stephen Dillane), tired of making money for other people; Allen's scantily-clad, put-upon secretary (Joy Bryant); and a sleazy local small-time hood who takes a shine to Pippa and decides to introduce her to the local drug scene. Almost entirely unconnected is Shy (Orlando Bloom), an easygoing local fisherman who has to keep his love affair with young Angela (Zoe Saldana) a secret from her wealthy, domineering father and her violent thug of a brother (Anthony Mackie).

Drumline Review

OK
I've always thought of marching bandmembers as just a bunch of geeks who walk about, stroking their instruments while swapping stories from band camp. I feared Drumline would be two hours of these musician wannabes screeching out simple notes on their secondhand instruments. To my surprise, Drumline is not just another recital from band camp; however, it's no symphony either.

The film centers around Devon (Nick Cannon), a freshman recruited to attend Atlanta A&T University on a full ride scholarship to play in the school's marching band. He's an overachiever with a chip on his shoulder who thinks he knows everything about playing the drums. At tryouts, which look more like boot camp, Devon disrespects his band director Dr. Aaron Lee (Orlando Jones) by refusing to participate with the rest of the group. A power struggle soon ensues between Devon and his drumline section leader Sean (Leonard Roberts) who feels the freshman's talent threatens his position at the top of the food chain.

Guess Who Review

Very Good
Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher), an anxious, young businessman, is about to journey with his girlfriend, Theresa (Zoe Saldana), to meet her parents for the first time. They also intend to announce their recent engagement, so it's going to be a very eventful trip. But there's one small problem. She's black. He's white. And she hasn't told her parents yet.

Theresa's father, Percy (Bernie Mac), another businessman, has completed underground investigation on Simon, and he likes what he's found. Percy admires Simon for holding a position at a prestigious business; though, Percy doesn't know (and neither does Theresa, for that matter) that Simon just quit this job. Percy and his wife, Marilyn (Judith Scott), live a traditional, affluent life, and are looking forward to meeting the lucky guy who's dating their beautiful daughter, but they're in for quite the surprise.

Guess Who Review

OK
After setting the stage with half a dozen insultingly shopworn plot contrivancesin its first five minutes, "Guess Who" -- a seemingly ill-advisedcross between "Meet the Parents" and "Guess Who's Comingto Dinner" -- eventually finds its comedy footing by playfully dancingalong the edge of political incorrectness.

The meagerly amusing Ashton Kutcher plays a generic, kowtowing,romantic-comedy male dope named Simon, the kind of guy who quits his high-payingjob on principle (cliche) but lies about it to his fiance (contrivance)so she can find out about it on her own and thus break up with him (cliche),forcing him to win her back in the third act (oh, brother). This despitethe fact that it's never clear what she sees in him in the first place.

Simon also lies about his job to the girl's vociferousand intimidating father (cliche), whom he's meeting for the first timethat very weekend (contrivance). The young couple plans to announce theirengagement during a 25th anniversary party for her parents (there's a badidea), which will include a renewal of wedding vows (a plot crutch onlyused by screenwriters desperate to find a climactic setting for a big finale).

Having built its story arc around the kinds of dumb liesand misunderstandings that could be easily resolved if the characters wouldjust level with each other for 30 seconds, "Guess Who" wouldcollapse under the weight of its sheer idiocy if it weren't for the factthat Simon is white, his fianc=E9e Theresa (Zoe Saldana) is black, and herfather (Bernie Mac) is none too pleased about having that fact sprung onhim.

Center Stage Review

Good

In a brilliant stroke of summer event movie counter-programming, TriStar Pictures is opening this weekend a surprisingly satisfying sleeper called "Center Stage" -- about the competitive world of a prestigious ballet academy -- that teenage girls are going to gobble up like so much candy.

Turned away from sold-out blockbusters, they'll drag their dates into this "Fame"-lite crowd-pleaser revolving around ballet students dancing their hearts out for a place in the fictitious American Ballet Company. They'll love the pretty, ingenuous heroine (Amanda Shull) learning to believe in herself and her ability. They'll love the two handsome dancers that vie for her heart. They'll love the spectacular, toe-tapping and beautifully staged production numbers. They'll leave the theater smiling dreamily and make a beeline for the Danskin store.

And although they'll never let it show, the guys will like it, too.

The Terminal Review

Weak

A weightlessly bittersweet Steven Spielberg bonbon, "The Terminal" plays like the first few episodes of an expensive, gimmicky sitcom about a guy forced to live in an airport.

Tom Hanks is Viktor, an East European tourist left in travel-visa limbo when his fictional country of Krakozhia undergoes a coup and suspends all its passports while he's in flight to New York. When he lands at JFK, cursory attempts to explain the situation are offered by the airport's terse, procedure-wonk Homeland Security chief (Stanley Tucci) -- but only in English, which Viktor barely understands. Then he's left to his own devices but told he cannot leave the international terminal.

So he sleeps on benches in an under-construction passenger gate and lives off fast food he buys with quarters collected by returning abandoned rented baggage carts to their vending-machine dispenser. Over weeks and months he learns English by reading tourists guides and comparing them to his own. And, of course, he has largely compartmentalized little adventures.

Get Over It Review

Weak

After Miramax jettisoned all remnants of integrity and started trafficking in assembly-line teen fare, a pattern began to emerge. Once or twice a year the studio would release another insipid high school or college romance starring the phenomenally talentless Freddie Prinze, Jr. -- a bland, blue-eyed magnet for 14-year-old girls. The happy endings always involved girls lowering their standards and/or taking back their pig boyfriends, and it seemed Miramax went out of its way to give each movie the blandest possible title like "She's All That," "Down To You" and "Boys and Girls."

This year's model is called "Get Over It" (the original title, "Getting Over Allison," was apparently deemed far too creative), and while it's still utterly forgettable and mostly unoriginal, at least somebody was making an effort this time.

That somebody would be Tommy O'Haver, the cleverly twinkly hand behind the zestful gay romantic comedy "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss." He cast genuinely capable actors like Ben Foster ("Liberty Heights"), playing the picture's generic lovelorn high school boy, and Kirsten Dunst, playing his best friend's sister -- the girl he inadvertently falls in love with while trying to win back his childhood sweetheart (adorable newcomer Melissa Sagemiller).
