'Guardians Of The Galaxy' - Marvel's New Super Franchise?

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Vin Diesel Bradley Cooper Dave Bautista

Guardians of the Galaxy was given a big platform to live up to before its official release with many calling the tenth Marvel instalment the best in the collection yet. First view critics were impressed with the look of the film and its special effects, the acting ensemble and the humour and comic play in it that is not always found in a Marvel superhero film. Even Jim Starlin, the comic book creator of villain Thanos, waded in, calling it Marvel’s best movie so far.

But, upon release, could it really live up those lofty expectations? The answer is yes and for many reasons.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Propels Seventies Music To Top Of Charts

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Bradley Cooper

Guardians of the Galaxy's quest for world domination seems to be going pretty well- the film has not only slain at the box office, it's won over the critics, and perhaps most importantly, the fans. But the film's success has also had a more musical impact: its delightfully retro soundtrack, featuring 1970's pop and rock hits, has gone straight to the top of the iTunes Charts.

Gotg

Featuring songs including 10CC's 'I'm Not In Love' and The Five Stairsteps 'Ooh Child', it's an electic group of tracks brought together under the title 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1'. Audiences were given a sneak peek of things to come in the film's trailer, when Blue Swede's 'Hooked on a Feeling' made an appearence and set the tone for things to come.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Review

Extraordinary

By refusing to follow the usual formula, filmmaker James Gunn has made Marvel's best-yet movie, a summer action-adventure that provides more cinematic fun than the rest of the year's blockbusters rolled into one. It's shamelessly entertaining, keeping the focus on sparky characters even as the action spirals into exhilarating set-pieces around them. And the best thing is that the film isn't actually about the big plot: it's about a group of people who should hate each other but instead come together as a team.

In a pre-logo sequence set in 1988 America, a young boy is kidnapped by aliens. Some 25 years later, Peter (Chris Pratt) has become an ace thief who roams the galaxy in search of cash. Curious and charming, he can get himself out of most scrapes, but when he collects a mysterious orb for a client he ends up as the target of two bounty hunters, the raccoon-like Rocket and tree-like Groot (voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel). And the villainously destructive Ronan (Lee Pace) sends his best fighter Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to get the orb for his own nefarious plan. Rounded up and thrown into prison, Peter, Gamora, Rocket and Groot stage a daring escape with the help of literal-minded muscleman Drax (Dave Bautista), then must work together to deal with this troublesome orb. So they contact Peter's mentor/nemesis Yondu (Michael Rooker) before taking on Ronan and his second-best fighter, Gamora's half-cyborg sister Nebula (Karen Gillan).

Gunn gives the film a look and tone unlike anything in the Marvel universe, with colourful ships, sassy humour and freewheeling action that propels the story and deepens the character at the same time. It also makes the most of the well-worn 1980s mixtape Peter uses as his own personal soundtrack. It's the kind of riotously thrill ride that makes us hold on for dear life, loving every twist and turn. And since it's so tightly focused on the characters, the action plot involving the orb merely adds texture around the edges. As do terrific actors like Glenn Close and John C. Reilly in small but pivotal roles.

Everybody Wants A Piece Of Chris Pratt, Guardian Of The Galaxy

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Bradley Cooper

It’s been a well-documented rise to fame for Chris Pratt – the guy who used to carve out sections of his Reebok classics because he couldn’t afford new ones that fit. Now, he leads an all star cast in Marvel’s latest multi-movie deal, and if the reviews are anything to go by, he’s got himself a franchise to be proud of.

Chris PrattChris Pratt executing part of the part-plan he has partly figured out

"What's really nice about this movie is that I believe we did something that's never been done before ... So, maybe people wouldn't have seen me in this role, but that's because they weren't able to have the vision that James [Gunn, director] had for what this could be,” explained Pratt to Collider.

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Bradley Cooper Vin Diesel

London’s Leicester Square played host to the Guardian of The Galaxy premiere last night. The latest Marvel adventure has been attracting strong praise for the critics ahead of what is expected to be a big box office weekend for action-comedy.

“They're the thieves, the bounty hunters and the neglected”, explains Zoe Saldana of their characters in this featurette. “It's not a typical superhero movie.” Chris Pratt – who plays the ‘hero’ role, adds: “Peter Quill is the only human in this crazy world. He doesn't have superhuman strength or the abillity to fly but he uses his cunning and his charm to get himself out of situations.” Finally, Bradley Cooper – who plays a machine gun-wielding Racoon, Rocket - spoke highly of the melding of genres, both action and comedy. “There's a lot of humour in this one and a lot of heart. There's nothing like it, that's for sure.”

The film’s stars, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C. Reilly, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Dave Bautista, Laura Haddock, Glenn Close, Ophelia Lovibond, Peter Serafinowicz and Melia Kreiling – amongst others – were in attendance at the glitzy London premiere last night. The Critics LOVE "Guardians Of The Galaxy". All Of Them.

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana

After intense promotion from Marvel over the past six months, Guardians of the Galaxy is out in cinemas next week, but not before the critics get their say. This time, it’s a resounding yes, as the acting, the story and most of all the visuals of Guardians get the reviewers’ approval.

Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy
Marvel made a gamble with Chris Pratt and it's paying off big time.

According to Forbes’ Scott Mendelson, “writer/director James Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an absolutely crackling action-adventure film, a dazzling and engaging bit of optimistic sci-fi melodrama.” As for the story, which is usually a strong point of Marvel’s brand of superhero action,  there is “inventive spectacle to spare, but it remains rooted in character chemistry and successful broad-strokes storytelling that makes the action beats count as more than visceral moments.

Zoe Saldana Might Get A Head Start On That Big Family With Twin Babies

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana’s baby will probably get quite a lot of cool genes, so a pair of them would definitely be a good thing. A pair of babies, that is. Because that is what the Guardians of the Galaxy actress is expecting with husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, according to E! News.

The actress is yet to confirm the exciting news herself, and so far the reports by E! and Us Weekly are only backed up by insiders, but we’ll use this chance to say congratulations to the happy family anyway. It looks like Saldana is making great progress on that five children ambition she expressed in 2012.

New 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Trailer: What We Noticed

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Bradley Cooper Vin Diesel Glenn Close Dave Bautista Josh Brolin James Gunn John C Reilly Karen Gillan Benicio Del Toro

Prepare to check out the new trailer for the upcoming summer blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy, which is due to open from the end of July. James Gunn's visualisation of Marvel's lesser-known comic book series recruits a stellar cast in an outer space setting with jaw-dropping special effects and rib-tickling one-liners.

Chris Pratt takes the lead alongside Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Josh Brolin, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close Benicio Del Toro and Dave Bautista in what looks to be one of the action highlights of summer 2014.

In a nutshell, Pratt's adventurer, Peter Quill, gets stranded in space and unites a team of unlikely ex-con aliens in order to mount a defence against the cosmic threat of Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer

Peter Quill runs into some trouble when he discovers an unusual looking orb that happens to be hunted by the merciless admiral Ronan and his army of miscreants. He is an Earthling; an unusual race within his neighbourhood in which he grew up after being removed for his home planet as a child. Naming himself the Star-Lord, he likes to think he's one heck of a superhero - but he's about to meet his match (or should we say 'matches'?). After being arrested by Ronan's people, he is greeted by four other alien outlaws. First there is the enormous Drax the Destroyer who is determined to use his supernatural strength to avenge his murdered family; then there's cyborg Gamora, the daughter of Thanos (an even bigger villain in this story); Rocket, a psychotic gun-toting raccoon; and half-man half-tree Groot. They may be distrustful of each other, but they've got to stick together if they want to save the universe from certain annihilation.

Since when did superhero films have to be serious? Marvel apply comedy to comics with 'Guardians Of The Galaxy', which is based on the original comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The movie has been directed  by James Gunn ('Super', 'Slither', 'PG Porn') and co-written by Nicole Perlman and is due for UK release on July 31st 2014.

Back From The Dead! Sigourney Weaver's 'Avatar' Character Will Appear In All Sequels

Sigourney Weaver James Cameron Sam Worthington Zoe Saldana Stephen Lang

Sigourney Weaver will appear as her Avatar character Grace Augustine in each of James Cameron's three sequels, despite having been killed in the first movie. The 64 year-old film star first hinted in September 2012 that she'd be making a return to the hugely successful franchise but has now been confirmed to be starring in all of the quadrilogy.

"Jim says no one ever dies in science fiction," she told ComingSoon.net at the time. "He's told me the stories for the next two movies, and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."

"Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens," said the Cameron. "We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels."

Is ‘The Book Of Life’ The Next Big Animated Movie? [Trailer + Pictures]

Channing Tatum Zoe Saldana

Death may not seem like an optimum subject for an animated feature, but in The Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez quite literally brings the subject alive using vibrant colours and 3-D animation. Despite taking on what could be seen as a dark subject matter, Gutierrez has crafted a beautiful piece of moving art, which will surely enchant and enthral viewers. It might not hit theatres until October 17th, but we’re betting that this one could just be the next big animated feature.

the book of lifeManolo is fighting for the affection of his love Maria

The Book of the Life begins with two gods betting on the outcome of a love triangle between a girl named Maria and her two suitors, the arrogant Joaquin and the much more charming Manolo. When Maria comes close to choosing Manolo, one of the gods intervenes, poisoning him to ensure Joaquin will be chosen.

Book Of Life Trailer

In Mexico, two best friends Manolo (Diego Luna) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) fall in love with the same girl, Maria (Zoe Saldana and so both face each other for her love. Two spirits passing through the world, La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) and Xibalba (Ron Perlman), make a bet over who will triumph out of the two. Muerte on Manolo and Xibalba on Joaquin. When the Xibalba feels the odds are against him, he brings Manolo into The Land Of The Remembered.

The Book Of Life sees Manolo setting out on an exciting, but dangerous journey across three majestic worlds where he will face his greatest challenges, in order to return to Mexico and win over Maria once and for all.

From producer Guillermo Del Toro, The Book Of Life is an animated comedy film directed by Jorge Gutierrez and written by Gutierrez and Doug Langdale (Aladdin: The Return of Jafar). The Book Of Life sees Gutierrez attempt a Nightmare Before Christmas esque Tim Burton style, with jovially dark animation. With exceptional visuals and a story of fortitude, The Book Of Life should be a loveable film for all.

There’s Drax the Destroyer, a man of muscle hellbent on avenging the tragic murders of his family; Gamora, a green-skinned cyborg who is the rebellious daughter of Ronan’s boss Thanos; Rocket, a genetically modified raccoon with incredible firearm dexterity; and Groot, a half-man half-tree creature who knows little about the technological world. The 'Avatar' Sequels: Everything You Need To Know

James Cameron Sam Worthington Zoe Saldana

All has been fairly quiet on the Avatar sequels front lately, so we thought we’d do a bit of investigating to unearth what information is available to us.  We're nosy like that.

Director James Cameron has admitted they are still in the early stages of production, “Right now we’re developing the software. I’m writing the scripts. We’re designing all the creatures and characters and the settings, an so on.” While he didn’t exactly blow us away with a ton of new details, he did give a little away about what we can expect from the coming movies, “I think it’s going to be spectacular. You’ll see new worlds, new habitats, new cultures.” Hopefully that means that we’ll get to travel a little more around Pandora, and see what else the world has to offer.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Character Rundown: What You Need To Know

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Bradley Cooper Vin Diesel Lee Pace Karen Gillan

By now nobody is questioning Disney and Marvel’s decision to invest in the Avengers franchise. It started out a bit rough - 2008’s The Incredible Hulk is still a mostly ignored part of the cinematic universe – but by Iron Man 3, the series was grossing billions. Now that Marvel is on sure footing and the cinematic universe has an established fanbase, the studio is making the next move with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy is one of the most aniticpated movies of the year

On Tuesday the studio released a trailer and it looked like a hot mess. Granted, a hot mess featuring Chris Pratt, but there was also a talking raccoon. It had the unmistakable feel of an 80s sci-fi flick. On that note, here’s what you need to know about GotG’s bunch of A-holes for this movie to make any sense.

Out Of The Furnace Review

Very Good

Coarse and not exactly subtle, this dark drama might disappoint viewers expecting a more traditional revenge thriller, but there's something more interesting going on here. And even though it starts at full volume and only gets more intense, the film is actually remarkably thoughtful and measured in its approach.

It's set in the Rust Belt, industrial Pennsylvania, where Russell (Bale) works in a steel mill and worries about his little brother Rodney (Affleck), who's deep in debt to a local bookie (Dafoe). Then a late-night car crash lands Russell in prison, and when he's released everything has changed. He has no job, his girlfriend (Saldana) is now dating the local sheriff (Whitaker), and Rodney is paying off his debts by fighting in bare-knuckle boxing matches. Even more perilous is the fact that all of this puts the brothers on a collision course with vicious local redneck Harlan (Harrelson), who has no intention of making their lives easier.

The film opens with a particularly brutal display of Harlan's menace, so we know what's coming. And as everything goes from bad to worse for our two heroes, the film feels almost aggressively harsh. Of course, Bale and Affleck are terrific as these damaged men whose fierce bond both helps and puts them into danger. And both actors let us see beneath the surface as their lives fall apart. In what could be the thankless ex-girlfriend role, Saldana has some surprisingly powerful moments. And Harrelson is a deeply terrifying force to reckon with.

Frank is a remarkable cop with a lot to look forward to in his life, but as happy as he is, he still has major worries for the people around him. 'Infinitely Polar Bear' Shines At Sundance, But Who's The Fly In The Soup?

Mark Ruffalo Zoe Saldana

Infinitely Polar Bear has made its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival and seems to have emerged as one of the most prominent movies, despite some unsure reviews. In the film Mark Ruffalo ('The Avengers') plays Cameron, a dysfunctional father grappling with bipolar disorder who tries to win back his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) by attempting to take responsibility over their two daughters. The film is loosely based on the childhood experiences of writer and director Maya Forbes, whose father called his condition Infinitely Polar Bear.

Premiering at Sundance, the movie received a standing ovation at the weekend and everyone seems to be talking about the wider release of the sweet and poignant film. Both lead actors may be known for playing superheroes in action movies but Saldana has said that she enjoyed playing a parent with Ruffalo because "those are the real avengers, the real guardians of the galaxy!" via NY Daily News.
