Keira Knightley Admits She's A Spelling Error, But Who Else Has A Weirdly Spelt Name?

Keira Knightley Jaime Winstone Alyson Hannigan Thom Yorke Tobey Maguire Courteney Cox Barbra Streisand Nicolas Cage Zooey Deschanel Ioan Gruffudd Ashlee Simpson

Keira Knightley has always baffled the world with her first name's unique spelling, but as it turns out, rather than it being creative license on the part of her parents, it was a simple spelling mistake that less than impressed her father.

Keira Knightley has done well despite the difficult start her name had

In an interview with Elle magazine, the 29-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star explained that she was supposed to be named after the Russian figure skater Kiera Ivanova but her mother got the spelling wrong when she went to register the birth. Apparently, this didn't go down too well with Mr Knightley.

Ariana, Zooey, J-Lo, Miley! When Actresses Become Songstresses

Jenny Lewis Miley Cyrus Kylie Minogue Zooey Deschanel Ariana Grande Scarlett Johansson Juliette Lewis Taylor Momsen Jennifer Lopez Hilary Duff Selena Gomez Demi Lovato Lindsay Lohan She & Him Juliette And The Licks The Pretty Reckless

There seems to be a special musical buzz in the entertainment business at the moment reserved for screen actresses who are wanting to spread their wings in their career - and maybe earn some more money too. Whether it's Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande blowing everyone away with her stunning vocal range as she gears up to release her second album this summer, or indie favourite Jenny Lewis becoming ever more successful with her solo singing career after a good three years fronting a band, it appears that some actresses just can't resist testing their pipes in the recording studio. Even Hollywood sensation Scarlett Johansson dipped her toes in musical waters back in 2008 with her well-praised debut 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'.

While we're half expecting Keira Knightley to release a record any day now after singing on her latest drama 'Begin Again', we look at the film world's biggest female musical successes.

Jenny Lewis promoJenny Lewis: Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis this week released Voyager, her critically acclaimed third studio album. Although best known for her time fronting indie favourites, Rilo Kiley, music wasn't actually Lewis's first career choice, instead the Vegas native was intially known as an actress. Her early showbiz experience mainly consisted of TV roles, with small parts in the likes of 'Baywatch', 'Brooklyn Bridge' and 'The New Twilight Zone' in the 80s and early 90s as well as film stints on 'Troop Beverly Hills' and 'The Wizard'. Her last major acting venture came with 1995's black and white drama 'Don's Plum' alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire before she formed Rilo Kiley with then-boyfriend Blake Sennett.

Zooey Deschanel Anton Yelchin

It looks like ‘New Girl’ star Zooey Deschanel’s return to the big screen is really in full swing as the actress has just been added to another project, entitled The Driftless Area. Shooting is expected to begin next month on the dark comedy, which boasts an impressive cast and crew and looks like it could be the perfect vehicle to relaunch Deschanel’s film career, which seems to have taken a back seat to television lately.

Zooey DeschanelZooey has signed on for The Drifltess Area

Not long after we first heard Prince would be making his debut cameo in an episode of Fox comedy New Girl, we've already been gifted with the first on-set snap showing The Purple One looking cool yet solemn squeezed in between Zooey Deschanel's Jess and Jake Johnson's Nick on a stone bench.

Mindy Kaling Feels As Though 'Elle' Cover Critics Are "Insulting" Her

Mindy Kaling Allison Williams Amy Poehler Zooey Deschanel David Letterman

When Elle presented their four-cover edition of their latest edition, their 'Women in TV' issue, it featured four of the most prominent female TV stars working today. Among the four was The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling, whose cover caused an unwarranted amount of controversy and conversation over how the majority of her body was cropped out of the cover image, unlike the other, mostly full-body other three.

Mindy Kaling
Mindy outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre before appearing on Letterman

White, skinny actresses Allison Williams, Amy Poehler and Zooey Deschanel all feature from the knee up and in full colour on their respective cover photos for the February issue of the magazine, whereas Kaling's image is in black and white and her picture is much more close up than the rest, with her chest, face and one arm only seen in the picture. For some, this looked way too suspicious to be a coincidence and the online crusaders stood up for Kaling in their droves. Trouble is, Kaling didn't really want standing up for and the arguments her so-called supporters were crusading for were actually a little hurtful.

Zooey Deschanel Damon Wayans Jr. Max Greenfield

After appearing once in the pilot episode of Fox comedy New Girl, Damon Wayans Jr. was nowhere to be seen in the succeeding episodes and even seemed to have been replaced by Lamorne Morris' Winston Bishop. Two and a half years later and Damon made his triumphant return to the apartment to reunite with his old friends for six episodes.

However, Coach's return has ramifications for Nick and Jess' newly kindled relationship and his presence harks back to a time when all the flatmates were living as single guys together.

Zooey Deschanel Caption Mistakenly Links Actress To Boston Marathon Bombing

Zooey Deschanel

A Zooey Deschanel caption has identified the actress as the second suspect in the Boston bombing – no, it wasn't true, just a mistake at the Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth news station. The strange and completely untrue caption, stating: “Marathon bombing, he is 19-year-old Zooey Deschanel” was the result of a mistake, for which the channel later apologized. It’s unknown whether it was human error or possibly and autocorrect type fail that lead to Deschanel’s name being put in the place of the actual suspect, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev. However, the New Girl actress managed to brush off the incident and kept it cool over Twitter (sort of) by writing: Whoa! Epic closed captioning FAIL! “@joelmchale: Oh my RT @peterogburn”

Fox 4, which is a local affiliate network of Fox News, later apologized for the blunder, saying: "Yeah... it's been one of those weeks in pretty much every way... Have a wonderful weekend everybody and thanks for sticking with us through the crazy!!"

In their defense, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is a pretty unusual name and several news anchors struggled to pronounce it, so the unintentional typo wasn’t exactly unexpected. And anyway, the caption probably went unnoticed by a lot of people and those who did notice it, didn’t seem to think much of it. So no harm, no foul. Nothing to see here.

Best Episode Ever? New Girl Spoilers Lie Within...

Zooey Deschanel

Best episode ever? That’s what Huffington Post reckon to Episode 19 of New Girl and it looks as though they may not be alone. With opinions and spoilers bounding around the internet, Huffington Post have gone all out and declared last night’s episode of Zooey Deschanel’s cutesy modern-day-Friends sitcom. The slow-burning ‘will they, won’t they?’ romance between Jess and Nick finally hit the ‘oh, right, they will’ stage and culminated in some pretty fierce making out. Which is just what the viewers were after let’s face it.

New Girl being New Girl and Jess being Jess, the journey to the two characters finally getting it on was not, of course, an easy one. Nick had got himself involved with his new boss, who had been inspiring him to actually try to be good at his job (to the extent that he actually asked his buddies to pay for their drinks at the end of his shift, for a change). The flipside of Nick’s new workmanlike approach to his job, was that Jess suddenly found him a whole lot more attractive. In comes a bizarre scenario in which Nick knocks Jess out in a hardware store and the effect of the painkillers she takes leads her to lose a few inhibitions and come on to him. She doesn’t remember it but he sure as hell does (not least because the shock of it landed him with a burnt hand).

They get there in the end though, in a peculiarly awkward fashion: “They make out pretty rough, more intense than that one kiss that one time, and as they start getting serious and Nick props Jess on the table and tells her to undress, he shatters the fish tank… they each go to their respective room. They pop out of there for a minute to kiss again, but that's it. Best. Episode. Ever.” Are they going to be able to top that?

Zooey Deschanel Is Beautiful Outside And In: 'I'm On A Mission To Help Other Women'

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel is best known for her hilarious show 'New Girl' as well as her co-starring role in Elf, in which she's blonde and looks a very far cry from her appearance now. Acting isn't her only talent as she's also part of a musical duo called She&Him, alongside Matthew Ward, plus, on top of all that, she's also spearheading one side of a feminine revolution on her site Hello Giggles. She's this month's Cosmopolitan cover girl and the more she speaks about her aims and values the more we like and respect her!

A large portion of Hello Giggles is from contributors of all ages from across the world, speaking about what they care about and hoping that others feel the same way - more often than not, they do. Speaking about what encouraged her to create the site she said that they started it "for fun" but it has now become "a mission to make it a thing that helps other women." (The Daily Mail)

She also explained how her experience of being teased at school has added to the site, saying "There were insecurities that I think I would have worked through a lot faster if I'd had certain tools and could have connected with certain people earlier. If there had been a place like [Hello Giggles] for me when I was 13, I would have felt so much less alone."

Changes In The Planning Of The Ultimate New Girl Jess And Nick Spoiler

Zooey Deschanel Jake M. Johnson

They had three more seasons in which they could’ve dragged out the sexual tension between Nick and Jess, but instead the creators of New Girl have opted to get it over and done with – the pair smooched for the first time in the latest episode, giving the writers a whole new challenge as to what direction to go in with over the forthcoming seasons.

The kiss apparently almost didn’t happen; originally Jess (played by Zooey Deschanel) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) were supposed to be behind a curtain in a game, and given orders to make out. However the storyline changed to it being Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson); even then they’d decided that the episode wouldn’t end in kissing, only to change their mind shortly before shooting. “Liz [Meriweather, series creator] pulled me aside and said they changed the end of the episode,” Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. “I said great. In the past we’d have to do another take because Nick and Jess were sitting too close together and they wanted to keep us apart. So we were really excited we were allowed to go for it.”

According to Meriweather herself, she said: ”We were right on the edge of starting to spin our wheels with their story and holding out any longer felt like not an honest thing. It felt exciting to give ourselves this challenge of how are they going to get out of this or how is this going to affect everything. We came up with the way for him to kiss her the way he wanted to. And as we were pitching it out we were all like, ‘That’s hot!’” Of course they now have three more seasons to think up how this is going to develop; as we saw in Friends, Ross and Rachel’s relatively early relationship in the show worked out well, the pair subsequently breaking up and having a will-they-won’t-they friendship for long after, before a happy ending. Maybe this could go the same way.

Ok, so we're sorry for the Chris de Burgh reference in the headline, though red really was the colour to be seen in at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday evening (January 13, 2013). Everyone's favourite kooky girl Zooey Deschanel and Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence probably died inside a little when spying each other on the red-carpet. Zooey Deschanel Has Her Say On Skinny Actresses And Her Detractors

Zooey Deschanel

The ever quirky Zooey Deschanel has carved her own niche into the timbre of television, starring as 'new girl', Jess, in the sitcom... New Girl. Below her aloof facade lies a strong, opinionated young woman, who isn't afraid to tell the industry where it's at.

In a rant targeted at the physics of actresses today, Deschanel has stated in no uncertain terms that she thinks they're too skinny.  "Women I admired growing up-- Debra Winger, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep--were all beautiful and thin, but not too thin," she explained in the February issue of Glamour magazine. "There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny--much, much too skinny. You can't Pilates to that. I'm a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I'd look like them; it's scary. For young girls, what does that say? You need to look this way to be successful? That's not true. You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what's acceptable is larger than what people believe."

It's not just the diminutive stars that incurred Zoe's wrath; she also had something to say to those who don't dig her feminist vibes intertwined with her girly nature. "I'm just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say," she said. "We can't be feminine and be feminists and be successful? I want to be a f**king feminist and wear a f**king Peter Pan collar. So f**king what?"

'Demand A Plan' PSA: Hollywood's Biggest Stars Unite Against Gun Violence

Beyonce Knowles Will Ferrell Reese Witherspoon Jamie Foxx Jessica Alba Zooey Deschanel John Legend

On the same day that the NRA calls for there to be armed guards at all schools, celebrities have come together to film a campaign video for 'Demand a Plan', which asks the government to do just that- come up with a plan to tackle the national epidemic of gun violence. The plan that the NRA offers is definitely not the answer that these celebs are after.

As stars, including Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and John Legend, among many more, speak the names of cities, and the names of places, they also ask their core question: How many more? Fundamentally, there can't be any more, enough is enough. And this is precisely why they are demanding a plan. The video- which you can see below- is linked to the Demand a Plan website, the homepage of which has three main requests:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America

With Money In The Bank, Zooey Deschanel Finally Divorces Ben Gibbard

Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard

Zooey Deschanel has officially divorced Ben Gibbard, the American indie rock singer with Death Cab For Cutie. The New Girl actress filed for divorce in January, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. They married in 2009 and have no children together.

According to TMZ.com, a judge signed off the divorce on December 12, 2012, with both waving their rights to spousal support. The move kind of makes sense given both are pretty well off financially. Gibbard's group are on their seventh studio album and have a popular following, while Deschanel has risen to become one of the most popular actresses in the U.S. and beyond. Her Fox comedy New Girl has received impressive ratings and reviews, and she remains in-demand in Hollywood. During the divorce filing earlier this month, Zooey's lawyer found it necessary to attach her income and expense declaration, which confirmed her healthy financial state. She makes an average of $95,000 a month though spends only $22,500. She has three credit cards all of which have a zero balance, and has $1,578,000 in the bank. The actress also has an additional $1,645,000 in stocks and bonds and has property worth $693,000. The documents revealed that Zooey spends around $1,000 a month on groceries and household supplies, $500 on eating out, $800 on utilities, $300 on phone and email accounts, $600 in laundry and, of course, $2,000 on clothes.

Oh, and she also donates $1,500 a month to charity.

Zooey Deschanel's Divorce Is Finalised, But She Receives A Golden Globe Nomination

Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard

Having been married for two years and then separated for a year, the divorce between Zooey Deschanel and the Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard has finally come through.

Deschanel filed for divorce late last year after two months of separation. The pair had married in 2009, but as People reports, the divorce papers say: "Unhappy and irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties, which have caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage. There is no possibility that counseling . or mediation could save the marriage."

The 'Elf' star is currently starring in her own series called 'New Girl', in which she plays a kooky teacher living with a group of three guys in a loft apartment in California, for which she's recently received a Golden Globe nomination. As well as acting she has released music in the form of She&Him along side M. Ward, including an adorable Christmas album. Plus, she has her own entertainment website for women called HelloGiggles that takes submissions by readers for articles that are pertinent to their interests as well as to those who read it.

Top Twenty Classic Holiday Season Christmas Films

Chevy Chase Will Ferrell Zooey Deschanel Bill Murray Tim Allen Michael Caine The Muppets Macaulay Culkin Joe Pesci Eddie Murphy Dan Aykroyd Billy Bob Thornton Bruce Willis Alan Rickman Robert Downey Jr Val Kilmer Cameron Diaz Kate Winslet Jude Law Jack Black Keira Knightley Hugh Grant Colin Firth Johnny Depp

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!

Let The People Decide! People Choice Awards 2013 Nominees Announced

Channing Tatum Johnny Depp Joseph Gordon-Levitt Zooey Deschanel Will Smith Jane Lynch Sofia Vergara

The Peoples Choice Awards give the general public a chance to decide whose acceptance speech they want to hear. Gone are the stuffy critics and 'experts' who normally plump for how good a film, or concentrate on someone's artistic integrity when making award decisions; in are the general public, who like wardrobe malfunctions and when people treat each other awfully.

So who's up for public recognition of the entertainment kind? Perhaps one of the biggest categories is 'favourite movie actor', in which Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Robert Downey Jr. and Will Smith are all in the running. We think Channing will receive the nod because of his recent Sexiest Man Alive award, but we hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt will win, because of his excellent work in Looper. On a more light-hearted note, the people will have Jane Lynch, Kaley Cuoco, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara and Zooey Deschanel to choose from in the best comedy actress category. We think Kayley Cuoco will win despite being under pressure from Deschanel in her kooky New Girl role. The Big Bang Theory's clout should prevail, though.

The film portion of the night features a list of blockbusters, and is 80% comprised of movies beginning with 'the'; people like stuff with 'the' stuck on. The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman are fighting it out. We hope Snow White wins. We won't tell you why. Catch the awards live on CBS, January 9th, 2012.

'New Girl' Avoids Tuesday Night Ratings Slump . Unlike Many Of Its Rivals

Zooey Deschanel

Fox were panicking after the premiere for the news series of New Girl dropped in with a relatively disappointing Tuesday night rating. However, the studio bosses can be positively delighted that the show managed to hold onto most of its viewers on an evening where shows were shedding viewers left right and center, begging the question - just where did everyone go?

Entertainment Weekly reports that networks were struggling all over the shop. ABC were steady with Dancing With The Stars at 11.8 million viewers, but lost 16% on Private Practice. Fox meanwhile saw Raising Hope moved to a tougher time and lose a huge 45% on its ratings as a result, the network also suffering big viewing losses with their new comedy Ben & Kate, which was down 24%, and The Mindy Project which fell 21%. Ouch. In comparison, New Girl managed to hold steady with a solid audience of 5.1 million viewers.

Fox and ABC can take consolation in the fact that even the network at the top of the pile for overall ratings last night, CBS, took hits on its three big shows of the night, with NCIS, NCIS:LA and new drama Vegas all suffering falls of between 9% and 16%. NBC struggled as well, a "best of" The Voice falling sharply, with Go On, New Normal and Parenthood all slumping too. Where were you all?

Zooey Deschanel Brushes Off Potential Emmy Awards Wardrobe Embarrassment

Zooey Deschanel

It was something that could easily have happened to her awkward, geeky character in New Girl; actress Zooey Deschanel suffered potential embarrassment at the Emmy Awards 2012 last night (September 23rd) as she had a wardrobe malfunction right before going on stage to present the Emmy for Writing in a comedy series.

Thankfully, the unflappable actress had her publicist with her and the pair of them reacted quickly to the issue. Explaining it to E! Online, Deschanel explained that "[we] had to cut my bra off because it was showing. We just had to cut part of it. It was before I went on. It was after the red carpet." Deschanel often comes across as pretty level-headed and down to earth, so instead of having a major freak out, she took a more philosophical stance on something that could've ruined the evening for more image-aware peers. "I don't even care really because it's all fun" she told the website. "This is just supposed to be for fun. If you're not having fun, what are you doing?"

Deschanel was also quick to point out that she wasn't wearing a dress that was deliberately showing plenty of flesh for the sake of it. "I wouldn't wear that kind of dress" she insisted. "I just didn't want my bra to show."

Nigel Lythgoe has recently reported his views on the appointment of Demi Lovato and Britney Spears as US X Factor judges. 'I hadn't ever considered them. I always like mentors who have a lot more experience,' Lythgoe told E!. He agreed that it would be 'interesting' however, given the girls' amount of 'personal experience'.

Bridge To Terabithia Review

Weak
One wonders if the makers of Bridge to Terabithia actually have something against all the people who loved reading Katherine Paterson's award-winning book as children. The original story, which deals with loneliness, isolation, and the importance of friendship, is now -- thanks to a cloying screenplay by Jeff Stockwell and the book's author's son David Paterson -- little more than an anodyne valentine to the power of the imagination or some such cliché popular among vulgarizers of young adult literature. You could ask, why can't they just leave well enough alone? The answer, unfortunately, is they never do.

A great many problems with Bridge to Terabithia could have been solved by casting, and unfortunately director Gabor Csupo gets that wrong from the start. The protagonist, Jesse Aarons, a lonely fifth grader in a small town, is played with sullen inattention by Josh Hutcherson. His better half is Leslie Burke, the new girl in town, performed by AnnaSophia Robb with a bright and shallow perkiness that suggests a callow Keira Knightley 10 years ago. With not much going in the way of interpersonal chemistry between the two leads, it's difficult for the film's rather (on the surface) uneventful and deeply interior story to gain much traction.

Celebrity Mix Review

OK
Well, this is truth in advertising: Celebrity Mix is a compilation of vanity projects featuring headliners like Paul Rudd, David Hyde Pierce, and Zooey Deschanel.

As is always the case with compilation discs, some of the eight vignettes are good/great, and some are barely watchable. The headlining short, "Laud Weiner," makes up for its obvious title with a dead-on portrayal by Pierce of an egomaniac power broker. Just four minutes long, don't expect a lot of nuance, but it's funny to see the normally mild-mannered Pierce yell at interns.

Manic Review

Good
When troubled teen Lyle (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) goes postal, gets put in restraints, and is commited by his mother to a juvenile mental facility, we get sent there, as well. Suddenly, we're in institutional surroundings much like that in Girl, Interrupted -- only we stay there. We don't get to escape and have an adventure on the outside. What's worse, we're subjected to digital video camera work that is tortuous enough to bring out whatever manic manifestation there might be lurking on the edge of our frontal lobe. It's cinema verité and as subjective as a camera can be.

The backstory on Lyle is that he attacked a kid with a baseball bat. Yes, the guy taunted him during a baseball game, and Lyle has had his share of troubles at home -- all of which is going to come out in therapy -- but that's why he's considered enough of a menace to society and to himself to make him a candidate for Northward Mental Institution, a spa for undisciplined youths run by therapist-in-charge Dr. David Monroe (Don Cheadle). Totally tight-lipped at first, Lyle commands attention by the sheer unpredictability of how and when his fast fuse of rage will ignite into violence.

Mumford Review

Very Good
Mumford reminded me how nice it is to forget yourself in the midst of a good story - Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon) latest charm will keep you grinning. Speaking of smiles (and tangents), this is a great film for anyone who likes to look at mouths; I haven't seen so many close-ups of teeth and gums since the last time I went to the dentist!

Loren Dean (Enemy of the State, Apollo 13) does a decent job as Dr. Mumford, the most popular psychologist in the small town to which he just moved. Listening attentively to the tormented visitors of the treatment couch, his apparent peace of mind and even temper become infectious. Ubiquitously available and sounding less like a shrink than a wise uncle who gives just enough advice at just the right time, it's no wonder Dr. Mumford is everyone's favorite confidant. But will those he's helped to see through their own faults be just as understanding if they find out the truth of his past?

Abandon Review

Weak
A timely late October release and a spooky ad campaign suggest that Abandon revolves around the ghostly return of a long-lost boyfriend who haunts a lovely coed. Not the case. In reality, it's a melodramatic after school special about a deranged college girl who gets left by every man she dares to love, starting with her father. It's not scary, unless you happen to be the girl.

The question driving Abandon is who abandoned who? Did charismatic but manipulative Embry (Charlie Hunnam) leave his clingy college sweetheart, Katie (Katie Holmes, who probably would get confused if she and her character didn't share a first name), or is it the other way around? And is Embry alive and kicking on a European jaunt, or dead, as a sleazy, washed-up detective (Benjamin Bratt) believes but can't prove?

Eulogy Review

OK
Michael Clancy's Eulogy is sort of a sitcom version of The Royal Tenenbaums, with its estranged family united by a dying (well, in this case, dead) patriarch who no one particularly likes (played here, briefly, by Rip Torn). The most sympathetic and grounded member of the family is Kate (Zooey Deschanel); she is chosen to deliver her grandfather's eulogy, and must extract scarce fond memories from her father Daniel (Hank Azaria) and his siblings Skip, Lucy, and Alice (Ray Romano, Kelly Preston, and Debra Winger, respectively).

Standard black-comedy stuff, then, though not without promise. Clancy doesn't have a strong directorial touch, operating only a level or two above the point-and-shoot techniques of an actual sitcom -- and a little lower when it comes to the laugh-track ready entrances and exits. But he does capture the feel -- the shabby decor, the lines of cereal boxes, the personal trepidation -- of a reluctant and unkempt family gathering. The Collins family is trapped in the family home until the funeral is over, foraging for emotional connections purely out of necessity. Whether this authenticity is achieved through close observation or a low budget is not immediately apparent; regardless, Eulogy's distaff family unit is more or less convincing -- as a whole, at least.

The New Guy (2002) Review

Terrible
When the screenwriter responsible for one of the worst movies of one year directs an equally miserable film the following year, you'd have a hard time believing it was just coincidence. But Ed Decter, writer of the horribly unfunny Freddie Prinze Jr. clunker Head Over Heels, takes the directing reins for the first time with the remarkably lame teen comedy The New Guy.

The premise is simple: a high school ugly duckling named Dizzy (Road Trip's DJ Qualls) turns it around and starts fresh at a new school, strutting like a badass and making a new personality for himself as a guy named Gil. The supposedly funny twist is that he gets his education in cool while hanging at a prison, taking lessons in toughness from Eddie Griffin (wasted in his short appearance), learning how to dance like a hipster from Horatio Sanz (also wasted), and getting a makeover from the stereotypical cross-dressing cons in the pen. In each scene, Decter and screenwriter David Kendall (big blame goes to him too) want to get right to the funny immediately - the only problem is that each attempt results in a vacant black hole.
