After Taylor Swift, Who Is Next To Sell A Million In A Week?

Taylor Swift Adele 5 Seconds of Summer Fun Eminem

It's pretty hard to believe what Taylor Swift has accomplished in just a short number of years. With her new album, 1989, it makes it her third record in a row that has sold over a million copies in its debut week (1.287 million, to be exact). Not to mention, it's also the only record of 2014 to surpass a million copies in the entire year. What she's doing is nearly unprecedented, but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift won't be the last to sell a million in her debut week.

Those sales aren't slowing down, either. 1989's second week numbers reached a mark of 400,000 - a figure that would still be the highest debut of the year if it wasn't for her previous million already. You can come up with a million (or 1.287 million) reasons why this album has become so successful already, but one of the things that has to be realized is that 1989 isn't single handedly saving industry. If you look at the projected number two spot on the Billboard chart this week, it's the Now 52 compilation, which is only planning on selling a mediocre 60,000-70,000 copies.

The results for MTV's Video Music Awards are in, with a mixture of the surprising and the obvious. Perhaps the two most important awards of the night, 'Video of the Year' and the 'Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award', also came with the most touching responses from the winners.

Beyonce at the MTV VMAs 2014
Beyonce won the 'Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award', as well as 'Best Collaboration' with husband, Jay Z.

Miley Cyrus came away with the most obviously big award of the evening - the Video of the Year award. She won it for the song 'Wrecking Ball', beating Beyonce ft. Jay Z's 'Drunk In Love' and Pharrell Williams' 'Happy'. She then went on to give her acceptance speech to a young homeless man named Jesse. He delivered a heart-felt message about the troubles of homeless youths currently living in the US.

5 Seconds Of Summer Hit The Top Of The American Charts

5 Seconds of Summer

Australian pop-rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer continue their relentless march to world domination as their self-titled debut album stormed to the top of the US Billboard charts. After one week the album already has the third highest sales figures of 2014 for a debut, and the fourth highest for any LP, with 253,000 copies shifted. Coldplay’s Ghost Stories has the highest one week figures with 383,000 copies sold.

5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer has also smashed the record for biggest sales by an Australian artist in the Soundscan era (since 1991, for you chart nerds). The previous record was held by the band themselves for their EP She Looks So Perfect which they set back in April with sales of 143,000.

Ella Henderson Holds Firm At No.1 With ‘Ghosts’

Ella Henderson 5 Seconds of Summer

Ella Henderson had maintained her position at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Ghosts’, meaning Australian boy-band 5 Seconds of Summer had to settle for No.2 with new single ‘Don’t Stop’. The boys from down under had led the chart for most of the week but Henderson managed to shift 3,000 more copies.

Ed Sheeran fell one place to No.3 with ‘Sing’, while George Ezra achieved his highest charting position so far with ‘Budapest’ going in at No.4. The seemingly immovable Sam Smith completed the top five with ‘Stay With Me’. Elsewhere in the chart, Gorgon City scored their second top ten single with ‘Here For You’ featuring Laura Welsh. The band had previously reached No.4 with ‘Ready For Your Love’.

Kerrang! Releasing 'American Idiot' Tribute Album

Green Day A Day To Remember Yellowcard New Found Glory Frank Iero 5 Seconds of Summer

Popular UK rock magazine Kerrang! has been known for the occasional covermount CD packaged with one of their issues, and they’ll be adding to that list next month. On June 11, Kerrang! will be releasing a tribute album for Green Day’s iconic record, American Idiot, to celebrate its ten year anniversary. According to a flyer tweeted out by Kerrang! editor James McMahon, the track listing is set to feature bands like You Me at Six, Falling In Reverse, Frank Iero, and 5 Seconds of Summer. Additionally, extra covers from Green Day’s Dookie will be included as well. No confirmed tracks have been announced yet, but the thought of 5 Seconds of Summer possibly covering “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” while You Me at Six takes on “Jesus of Suburbia” is enough to have us anticipate the release immensely.

In the meantime, which covers from pop-punk bands have been the best? You’ve got labels like Fearless Records releasing cover compilations every year, and bands have even made their own cover full-lengths. If anything’s for certain, there’s never a shortage of a band’s rendition of the current hit pop song or a classic oldie, but no matter the genre, they’re always looking to put their own spin on it to make it theirs. In some cases, the covers actually turn out better than the original.

Good News: 5 Seconds Of Summer's New Album Out June 27

5 Seconds of Summer All Time Low

5 Seconds of Summer’s breakout single, ‘She Looks So Perfect,’ wasted no time zooming to the top of the charts worldwide. The track hit number one in four countries and even made an impact in the United States, where it’s currently sitting at number 19 on the Top 40 charts. They aren’t showing any signs of slowing down either, as their full-length debut album is set for release on June 27. Although regularly touted as the “Next Big Thing,” it’s a title that’s no longer suitable for this Australian pop-rock group. 5 Seconds of Summer has already become a big thing. A very big thing.

The band’s She Looks So Perfect EP was released in late March and saw instant success, as it debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts selling 143,000 copies. It’s a feat that’s almost unprecedented in the region, as bands with similar sounds have rarely come close to those numbers. All Time Low, the popular pop-rock outfit that 5SOS actually take influence from, has only had their highest debut reach #4 on the charts, as their 2009 effort, Nothing Personal, sold 63,000 copies. Even more notable is that the 5SOS guys have collaborated with All Time Low vocalist Alex Gaskarth, and they’ve got the track, ‘Disconnected,’ to show for it (included on the ‘She Looks So Perfect’ CD single -- not EP).
